Multimedia Assignment

Multimedia systems have several key characteristics: 1) They ensure accessibility for all users, including those with disabilities through alternatives like captions. 2) They are scalable to accommodate different devices and screen sizes/orientations. 3) Many operate in networked environments, allowing widespread access and sharing of content. 4) They feature user-friendly interfaces that are easy to navigate, even for non-technical users.

MULTIMEDIA SYSTEMS

a) Differentiate between hypertext and hypermedia.

Hypertext refers to the system of managing the information related to the plain text,a cross referencing
tool which connects the links to other text using hyperlinks. Hypermedia refers to connecting hypertext
with other media such as graphics, sounds, animations.

b) Describe the components of multimedia

1)Text: Text is the most common medium of representing the information. In multimedia, text is mostly
use for titles, headlines,menu etc.

2)Audio: In multimedia audio means related with recording, playing etc. Audio is an important
components of multimedia because this component increase the understandability and improves the
clarity of the concept.

3)Graphics: Every multimedia presentation is based on graphics. The used of graphics in multimedia
makes the concept more effective and presentable.the commonly used software for viewing graphics
are windows Picture, Internet Explorer etc.

4)Video: Video means moving pictures with sound. It is the best way to communicate with each other. In
multimedia it is used to makes the information more presentable and it saves a large amount of time.

5)Animation: In computer animation is used to make changes to the images so that the sequence of the
images appears to be moving pictures. An animated sequence shows a number of frames per second to
produce an effect of motion in the user's eye.

c) Differentiate between MPEG and JPEG

JPEG (Joint Photographic Expert Group)is primarily used for Web images, digital cameras, other devices
that capture still images. MPEG (Moving Picture Expert Group) is primarily used for Movies, TV shows,
video clips on the web. JPEG is mainly used for image compression.

d)What is digitalization

Digitization is the process of converting information into a digital (i.e. computer-readable) format. The
result is the representation of an object, image, sound, document, or signal (usually an analog signal)
obtained by generating a series of numbers that describe a discrete set of points or samples.

e) What is multimedia authoring? Describe multimedia authoring tools.

Definition:Multimedia authoring involves collating, structuring and presenting information in the form of
a digital multimedia, which can incorporate text, audio, and still and moving images.

Multimedia authoring tools:

Microsoft PowerPoint: A popular choice for creating multimedia presentations.

Thrive Suite is the place to go if you’re looking for an all-in-one authoring software to help you build
highly profitable online courses.

ActivePresenter 9 is known for its feature-rich content editor that allows you to create interactive e-
learning content without the hassle of a complex authoring process.

Compozer is an easy-to-use multimedia authoring tool that’s built to simplify the entire course creation
process. It gives you the ability to design media-rich learning courses with interactive elements like
images, videos, and audio into your courses, all without the need for extensive coding or design
expertise.

Chameleon Creator earned its popularity among the L&D world because of its intuitive multimedia
authoring tool that you can use even without any training.

f) What is MIDI? Briefly explain the components of MIDI?

MIDI, which stands for Musical Instrument Digital Interface, is a protocol used for communicating
musical information and instructions between electronic musical instruments, computers, and other
devices. It allows for the control of musical elements such as notes, pitch, duration, and more.

Components:

Sequencer:It can be a stand-alone unit or a software program for a personal computer. (It used to be a
storage server for MIDI data. Nowadays it is more a software music editor on the computer.

Synthesizer:It is a sound generator (various pitch, loudness, tone colour).A good (musician's) synthesizer
often has a microprocessor, keyboard, control panels, memory, etc.

Track:Track in sequencer is used to organize the recordings.Tracks can be turned on or off on recording
or playing back.

Channel:MIDI channels are used to separate information in a MIDI system. There are 16 MIDI channels in
one cable.Channel numbers are coded into each MIDI message.

Timbre:The quality of the sound, e.g., flute sound, cello sound, etc.

Multitimbral - capable of playing many different sounds at the same time (e.g., piano, brass, drums, etc.)

Pitch:musical note that the instrument plays

Voice:Voice is the portion of the synthesizer that produces sound.

Synthesizers can have many (12, 20, 24, 36, etc.) voices.

Each voice works independently and simultaneously to produce sounds of different timbre and pitch.

Patch:the control settings that define a particular timbre.

g) Explain the characteristics of multimedia systems.

Accessibility: Ensuring that multimedia content is accessible to all users, including those with disabilities,
is a critical characteristic. This involves providing alternatives like captions and screen readers for visually
impaired users.

Scalability: Multimedia systems need to be scalable to accommodate different screen sizes, resolutions,
and devices. They should adapt to various platforms and screen orientations.

Distributed and Networked: Many multimedia systems operate in networked environments, allowing
content to be distributed across the internet. This enables widespread access and sharing of multimedia
content.

User-Friendly Interfaces: To make multimedia systems accessible to a wide audience, they often feature
user-friendly interfaces that are easy to navigate and understand, even for non-technical users.

nchronization: Multimedia content is often synchronized, meaning that different media elements, like
audio and video, are timed to play together.

h) What is compression? Differentiate between lossy and lossless compression

Compression is the process of reducing the size of a file or data while retaining the essential information
it contains. It is commonly used to make data storage and transmission more efficient.

Lossy compression is typically used when a file can afford to lose some data, and/or if storage space
needs to be drastically ‘freed up’.Here, an algorithm scans image files and reduces their size by
discarding information considered less important or undetectable to the human eye.

With lossless compression the file data is restored and rebuilt in its original form after decompression,
enabling the image to take up less space without any discernible loss in picture quality. No data is lost
and as the process can be reversed, it’s also known as reversible compression.
