Making a
2 | Let’s make tomorrow better, together

difference
First Nations man Isaiah Kamid made Curtin history
in 2022 by becoming the first person of Aboriginal
or Torres Strait Islander descent to graduate with a
Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery.
“For many years, I was told my Aboriginality would hold
me back, but this never stopped me from wanting to
pursue a career that allows me to do the best for my
community and for the people I care about,” says Isaiah.
Addressing the shortage of doctors in rural and remote
communities has been a priority for Curtin’s Medical
School since it opened in 2017, offering a five-year
undergraduate course in medicine. A quarter of places
are reserved for students from rural Western Australia,
while work placements for all students provide exposure
to living and working in rural areas.
