“The Headless Priest”
By: Whole-U Jin L. Oraiz
The Headless Priest is a chilling urban legend in the Philippines, often recounted as a
cautionary tale. The story varies in different regions but typically revolves around a priest who was
unjustly executed or met a tragic end. As a result, his vengeful spirit roams the streets at night,
seeking retribution or justice for his untimely death. In some versions, the Headless Priest is said to
roam around specific locations, usually where he met his demise or where he was buried. In the
town of Dueñas, rumors swirled of spectral sightings within school grounds. Whispers spread of
shimmering figures by the abandoned English Garden as the town became wrapped in the mystery
of these supernatural apparitions."
According to my auntie Jonaly, during her elementary days she once had a classmate who
was always early and very cheerful person. They were friends and were very close to each other.
One uneventful day, that classmate had come to school early yet again due to boredom she sat
under the tree at the former English garden to pass the time. It was still 4 in the morning, it was still a
little foggy and the weather was a bit cold. She was all alone because she was always early. By
some unexplained phenomenon, the girl felt weakened and sense of breathlessness as if something
was trying to choke her by the throat. At the distance near the gate of the garden, she saw
something that would remain in her memory for years. It was something that was dressed holy that
emits a malicious aura, it was wearing a black vestment and its hands were in chains, bleeding
profusely. It was a priest. Out of fear, she blinked her eyes to only find the apparition in front of her.
She tried to scream but for some supernatural reason she could not. At that moment, she realized
something was wrong with the priest that scared her even more. It had no head. Thus, it made her
faint; hopefully, my auntie found her unconscious and called for help. After the incident, my auntie’s
classmate changed her attitude because it had a huge toll on her mental and emotional health. My
auntie said it took some time for her classmate to regain her vigor and for now she doing alright.
According to some old alumnus, Dueñas Central Elementary School was once cemetery, a
church predating the current one, and a school predating the current institution. Generally, the
Headless Priest is portrayed as a ghostly figure clad in priestly robes but lacking a head atop his
shoulders. Instead, the head is said to be carried under his arm or hovering beside him. Some
descriptions emphasize the spectral nature of the priest, attributing a glowing or translucent quality
to his form. He's often depicted as wandering aimlessly or haunting specific locations, seeking
justice or revenge for an unjust death. The aforementioned apparition was speculated to be a former
priest during time of the Spanish Colonization Period that was beheaded at the former English
Garden. Furthermore, others have claimed that it was a demonic entity dressing as a priest that is
seeking to harm others and weaken their faith.
May this chilling tale serves as a warning to disobedient children or as a way to keep people
from wandering alone at night. The Headless Priest will come for you…
