THE ROLE OF EMOTIONS
What is EMOTION?
A conscious mental reaction subjectively experienced as a strong feeling usually directed toward a specific object and
typically accompanied by physiological and behavioral changes in the body. (Merriam Webster)
It is often defined as a complex state of feeling that results in physical and psychological challenges. It influences the
human’s thought and behavior. It can bring positive or negative feelings. It is an “energy” in emotion.
It is a strong feeling or mental reaction directed toward a specific object and is accomplished by psychological and
behavioral changes in the body. According to Dr. Abraham Sterling, in modern day life, emotions demand greater
understanding because of their pervasive effect on behavior, personality, and health.
There are terms we often connect with emotion.
Feelings represent emotions. They are subjective or personal in nature. Emotions are intense, internal feelings.
(Weiten, 2014)
Moods are less specific have longer durations, but less intense than emotions. Emotions have shorter duration but
are more specific reactions. (Hasson, 2012)
Basic Emotions
Happiness, love, anger, fear, sadness, and surprise.
All other emotions are varieties of these basic emotions.
Emotions are not just mere feelings. Emotions are important in our lives because it help us in different ways which
include survival, decision making, and predicting behavior, setting boundaries, communication, happiness and
unity.
Feelings are also useful in helping you predict your own as well as other people’s behavior because you know how you
and other people usually behave.
Emotions can also help in communicating. If you are able to use your emotions correctly, may it verbal on non-verbal,
you would be able to build relationships through effective communications.
Eventually, emotions will also lead you to happiness. The better you identify your emotions, the easier you can
determine what is needed to be happy.
Emotions are universal. It has the potential to make you an instrument of unity, if you appeal to the emotions of
empathy, compassion, cooperation, and forgiveness.
Emotions affect a person in how he thinks and behaves. Emotions can be subjective. Feelings toward a particular
situation may be different from one person to the next.
The Role of Emotions
Emotions serve a vital role in the daily life of a human person.
1. Emotions can motivate a person to take action. Having a positive feeling helps a person improve his chances of
getting better things in life. Positivity gives him a good perspective and motivates him to take the proper action.
2. Emotions help a person survive, thrive, and avoid danger. Emotions serve an adaptive role in man’s life by
motivating him to act quickly and take actions that will maximize his chances for success.
3. Emotions allow a person to be understood by other people. People can understand feelings that they also
experience.
4. Emotions allow a person to understand others. Knowing one’s own emotion can teach a person to understand other
people’s feelings.
Literacy, Awareness, and Intelligence of Emotions
Emotional Literacy – It means knowing the emotions felt in yourself as well as others and dealing
with those feelings intelligently. Developing emotionally leads to emotional literacy.
Emotional Awareness – It has to do with sensing one’s feelings and those of others.
Emotional Intelligence – Is the ability to identify, assess, and control one’s emotions. It shows the maturity of a
person and his capacity to know himself.
There are five (5) categories of emotional intelligence:
1. Self-awareness. It is the ability to recognize an emotion as it happens.
2. Self-regulation. It involves self-control, trustworthiness, conscientiousness, innovation, and adaptability.
3. Motivation. It requires positive emotion and the capacity to push oneself toward one’s goals. It is made up of
achievement, drive, commitment, initiative, and optimism.

others, political awareness, and understanding people.

VALUING A VIRTUE
Prudence:
It is defined as the ability to govern and discipline oneself by the use of reason. Being prudent means to be insightful
and caution in times of decision making.
It is associated with wisdom and knowledge. A prudent person does not judge immediately but tries to weigh options
before finally making a decision.
It makes us more aware of the good and bad things that we tend to say or do. Prayer sustains prudence.
Fortitude:
It is the strength or courage in pain or adversity. It is the ability to carry one’s burdens or problems with serenity.
A person displays fortitude when he/she endures distress, and a person exercises prudence when he /she refuses an
invitation to do bad or illegal things.
It makes us “thinking beings” who understand that suffering is part and parcel of life. No one is exempt from pain. So,
instead of making people suffer because we, ourselves suffer, we can exude peace and tranquility because we know
that pain and sufferings will also come to pass.
“The best and most beautiful things in the world cannot be seen or even touched.
They must be felt with the heart.” – Helen Keller
“THE RIDE” Traversing in fleeting seconds,
by Marvin Enderes Batwing, corkscrew, cobra roll –
At times an ecstasy. At times horror,
The entrance board is inviting: Mixed feelings, reeling in a trance.
“Come, ride the adventure of life!”
Your heart leaps in excitement Raised hands on sea serpent roll,
As you face the daredevil ride. Surprise, anticipation, exhalation,
Yet eyes closed, mouth wide open,
On the brake run comes the train, At zero-gravity roll – all in terror.
The foremost part you choose,
The rails, tracks, and loops ahead, The blue skies in slow… motion,
Anxious, you tightly grip the bar. You feel elation beyond compare,
Alas! The double dip toward the ground,
As the red button blazes, Panic envelops your brain, chest, feet.
Slow force pushes you to a lift hill,
Hundred-fifty feet above the earth, Slowing down after the launch track,
The wait now gives you a scare, Friends in disbelief, some in anger,
Several terrified, few traumatized,
The descent begins, uncertain, yes, Yet happiness after droll testimonies.
Slowly, slowly, slowly… then – zoom!
Lost in time and space, A unique journey in a rollercoaster ride,
Your heart wallows I fear. Burst of emotions, sudden states of mind,
Like riding on the real game of life
When feelings and reason collide.
