Nitotile 489
Epoxy based Tile Adhesive and Grout

Section A : General Comments

High temperature working

It is suggested that, for temperatures above 35°C, the following guidelines are adopted as
good working practice:
(i) Store unmixed materials in a cool (preferably temperature controlled) environment,
avoiding exposure to direct sunlight.
(ii) Keep equipment cool, arranging shade protection if necessary. It is especially important to
keep cool those surfaces of the equipment which will come into direct contact with the
material itself.
(iii) Try to avoid application during the hottest times of the day.
(iv) Make sufficient material, plant and labour available to ensure that application is a
continuous process.

Equipment

It is suggested that the following list of equipment is adopted as a minimum requirement

Protective clothing : Protective overalls

: Good quality gloves, goggles and face mask
Preparation equipment : Suitable equipment/materials to ensure proper
preparation of the substrate
Mixing equipment : 1 KW slow speed drill, 400 or 500 rpm,
Plus Fosroc mixing paddle
Application equipment : Flat trowel
: Serrated trowel
: Rubber trowel

Application - points of note

Fosroc operates a policy to encourage the use, where possible, of approved or licensed
applicators. This ensures that works are completed satisfactorily so that the long-term
performance of the materials is assured. For contractors who wish to apply the materials
themselves Fosroc is also able to offer technical assistance and training, either on-site or at its
Training Centre in Jeddah.

Section B : Application Method

1.0 Surface Preparation

Tile Adhesive Applications

Attention to full and proper preparation of the substrate is essential for complete tile adhesion. For
new concrete, ensure all shrinkage movements have subsided.

1.1 Clean all surfaces and remove any dust, unsound materials, oil, paint, grease etc.

1.2 Fully clean the concrete of any other contaminants with a proper chemical degreaser.

Tile Grout Applications

1.1 The tiles should be well fixed to the ground and cleaned prior to commencement of
application of Nitotile 489 as an epoxy tiling grout.

1.2 Ensure that the grouting width to depth ratio is 2:1.

2.0 Mixing

2.1 The base and hardener components should be individually stirred to re-disperse any
settlement.

2.2 The base and hardener should then be mixed together until a uniform grey paste is obtained
for 2-3 minutes.

2.3 The filler should then be incorporated using a slow speed drill and paddle.

2.4 The mixing should be done is a suitable sized mixing vessel which can accommodate the
entire pack

3.0 Application

Tile Adhesive Applications

3.1 The application should be a controlled process. The open pot life of the adhesive will be for an
hour before the material starts hardening.

3.2 Select the area of application and spread the adhesive using a flat trowel. The application
should be at a thickness of 2-4mm.

3.3 Comb the surface and place the tile

3.4 Press the tile onto the adhesive with a twisting motion

Tile Grout Applications

3.1 Grout the joints using Nitotile 489 using a rubber trowel sweeping the grouting paste into the
joints ensuring that joints are completely filled

3.2 Level the grout using by running a suitably rounded tool along the grout.

3.3 Remove all excess material from tiles using a damp cloth before initial set.

4.0 Cleaning

4.1 After initial set, remove excess materials using Fosroc solvent 102 and/or by mechanical
removal.

4.2 Clean all equipment using Fosroc Solvent 102.

Section C : Approval and variations

This method statement is offered by Fosroc as a ‘standard proposal’ for the application of Nitotile
489. It remains the responsibility of the Engineer to determine the correct method for any given
application. Where alternative methods are to be used, these must be submitted to Fosroc for
approval, in writing, prior to commencement of any work. Fosroc will not accept responsibility or
liability for variations to the above method statement under any other condition.

 NITOTILE 489
 NITOTILE EP Grout

THE PROJECT
The Jubail SWRO Phase II, a continuation of the Al Fatah Water and Power project in
Jubail, has a design capacity of 58,500 m³/day and is projected to be completed by April
30, 2014.
This dual membrane plant with UF followed by reverse osmosis (RO) will be the largest
UF-RO desalination plant in Saudi Arabia. With a UF production capacity of 7,400 m³/h
(177 MLD), the SWRO facility will produce water for the city’s industry. An eight-month
pilot period with UF and other filtration technologies preceded the selection. During
piloting Pentair X-Flow’s membranes showed outstanding performance. This, combined
with the company’s track record and project management capabilities, led to the
selection of Pentair X-Flow. Surface Preparation

THE SOLUTION
The client requirements chemical resistant, solvent free, non-slump adhesives for
bonding ceramic tiles to concrete and masonry in the pump stations, Fosroc has
offered its product that comply with the client Specs.

 Nitotile 489 and Nitotile EP Grout has been offered by Fosroc and approved
to be applied for all the internal and external walls in the project
Tile fix using Nitotile 489

THE BENEFITS
 As per client request proposed material given better satisfaction,
especially non-slump on vertical application.
 Made the consultant, client happy since, tile fixing was easy on vertical,
