NAME: GRADE:
The Four Pillars of NHS
A student who is chosen to become a member of NHS must demonstrate qualities of all four pillars. You have received an invitation to join
NHS because you have a strong history of Scholarship. To ensure that students meet all requirements, students must complete this

● SCHOLARSHIP – keeping a strong semester and cumulative GPA as well as strong weekly ATL scores; must also meet school
academic deadlines
● LEADERSHIP – consistent leadership in and out of the classroom as a role‐model needs to be evident. It is further
recommended that you provide documented and verifiable leadership skills for clubs and/or sports in which you are currently a
member. (Note: This does not mean that you must be an officer in your current club, but that you take an active role and
demonstrate responsibility.)
● CHARACTER – attitude toward school, faculty, and peers as demonstrated through the IB Learner Profile / Expected School
Learning Results (ESLRs).
● SERVICE – documented and verifiable service on a regular basis, serving within and outside of the TCIS community and
passing DP Community, Action and Service (CAS)

reaching a consensus of views.

CHARACTER STATEMENT:
Please type a brief paragraph (Maximum 300 words) in response to the following prompt:
What does “character” mean to you? Share a personal story which demonstrates an aspect of your character.
Response:
One’s character is a mixture of virtues and vices. Of course, everyone claims to have more virtues than
vices, but I believe having virtues is not for oneself to claim, but for others to note after seeing actions,
rather than just hearing words. I am not entirely sure what kind of a character I have, but I will tell you one
particular, memorable action I have taken. During my service in the P2P program,
I offered free online tutoring services to a young Korean boy called Seung Yoon Kim and classes were
bi-weekly. My student, Seung Yoon’s, primary motivation was to retain and further develop his proficiency
in English throughout his indefinite stay at a Korean public school. There are many students like Seung
Yoon who struggle to maintain English fluency after transferring from an English-speaking educational
system to a Korean-speaking one, thus a quite specific and niche demographic of students. My service was
given with sincerity and understanding as I had also experienced a return to Korea from the American
school system, and had felt much like a fish out of water. Seven years after this transition I was able to join
TCIS. However, I struggled at first with the nuances of the English language, and wish I had had more
opportunities to maintain my proficiency while in the Korean school system. I am very grateful to have
been of help to someone in the same situation that I once found myself in. However, is this kind of empathy
a true virtue? That, I do not know. Instead, I can say with utmost surety my willingness to continue offering
my services in similar ways as part of the NHS, hopefully benefiting parts of this community and finding
something I could one day call a true virtue.
