Softball was invented in 1887 in Chicago as an indoor version of baseball. It gained popularity due to being easy to learn and play with minimal equipment needed. Softball is also versatile as it can be played indoors or outdoors. While similar to baseball in gameplay and rules, softball differs in field dimensions, ball size, pitching styles, and faster pace. A typical softball game begins with a coin toss to determine the batting order, followed by the pitcher throwing the ball for the first play to start the game. Players score runs by advancing around the bases and crossing home plate through hits, walks, or errors by the other team.

TOPIC: HISTORY /FACILITIES AND EQUIPMENTS IN SOFTBALL
IV. EXPLAIN
1. Softball was invented in 1887 in Chicago, Illinois, by George Hancock. The game originated
as an indoor version of baseball and was initially called "indoor baseball." The story goes that
on Thanksgiving Day, Hancock tied up the boxing glove to make it resemble a ball, drew a
diamond shape on the floor with a chalk line, and created a set of rules for the new game. Over
time, the game evolved, and the rules were refined to create what we now know as softball.

2. Softball became a popular sport due to several reasons. It is relatively easy to learn and play,
requiring minimal equipment and space. Its indoor and outdoor versions make it versatile and
suitable for various environments. Softball also gained popularity in schools and colleges,
contributing to its widespread appeal. Additionally, the game's fast pace and exciting plays,
combined with a strong sense of camaraderie among players, have contributed to its popularity.

V. ELABORATE
1. A generalization statement comparing softball and baseball could be: "While softball and
baseball share many similarities in terms of gameplay and rules, they also exhibit distinct
differences in terms of field dimensions, ball size, pitching styles, and overall pace of play."

VI. EVALUATE
1. The founder of softball is George Hancock.
2. A batted ball that lands in the right or left foul line is considered a foul ball.
3. The measurement of the softball oval is typically around 60 feet.
4. A batted ball that lands in the infield or outfield is considered fair or foul depending on
whether it lands within the foul lines.
5. Softball was introduced in the Philippines by American teachers and military personnel during
the early 20th century.

IV. EXPLAIN

1. A softball game typically begins with a coin toss to determine which team will bat first and
which team will play defense. The home team usually has the choice to decide whether they
want to bat first or play defense first. Once the decision is made, the game starts with the
defensive team's pitcher throwing the ball to the batter to initiate the first play.

2. A player scores a run in softball by successfully advancing around the bases and crossing
home plate. This can be achieved through a hit, a walk, an error by the defensive team, or a
variety of other means that allow the player to safely progress around the bases and reach
home plate before the defensive team can make the necessary plays to prevent the run.

V. ELABORATE

1. A generalization statement for when the umpire calls strikes and balls could be: "The umpire
calls strikes when a pitched ball crosses the plate within the strike zone and calls balls when a
pitched ball does not enter the strike zone or is outside the batter's reach."

2. A generalization statement for how the team at bat and the fielding team take their turns in
every inning could be: "In every inning, the team at bat attempts to score runs while the fielding
team tries to prevent them from doing so. After three outs, the teams switch roles, with the
fielding team taking the offensive position and the batting team taking the defensive position."

VI. EVALUATE

1. A pitch ball that did not pass in the strike zone is called a ball.

2. When a fly ball is caught by the defensive team, the batter is typically out, unless the catch is
made under certain circumstances, such as if the catch results in a sacrifice fly or if the catch is
made after the ball was hit foul.

3. The batting team is referred to as the offense.

4. If you score a point it is termed as a run.
5. A softball game is played by two teams.
