Some characters are head and shoulders above others!

Head Heights
The standard formula is that the average human being is approximately eight head-
heights tall, meaning that the head size is one unit and the rest of the body is mea-
sured as seven more heads. Superhero and comic book human types are drawn
using these proportions. Most cartoon characters have a drastically different head
height ratio. For example, the Power Puff Girls are two head-high characters (mean-
ing the size of the head is the same as the size for the rest of their body). The more
you stray from the human norm of eight head heights, the more exaggerated and
cartoonish your characters become. Like scriptwriting, the tradition, culture, and
genre of the film is often reflected in the design too. For example, the average head
height size of a standard character from the Japanese manga school of animation is
six head-heights tall.

How This Book Is Structured

I’m sure you will have seen that most textbooks on animation
are packed full with text and illustrations that cover most of
the aspects of the animation process—the author’s own books
included. Traditional sketchbooks, on the other hand, are entirely
devoid of anything except blank pages. The Animator’s Sketchbook
positions itself somewhere in between these two extremes. It is
done in this way so you will learn the core foundations of pose
and movement through brief written guidelines as you use the
additional blank spaces on each page to sketch out what you are
required to observe and draw. In this unique way, The Animator’s
Sketchbook offers itself up as a definitive, foundational workbook
for students who wish to become master animators or for current
professional animators (of every kind) who want to raise the bar
on their own mastery accordingly.
