G+2 BUILDING Structural Design Report

1. Introduction

1.1 General
The structure to be designed is reinforced concrete residence building [G+3+T] lying
approximately on 300 m2.. And consist of THREE upper floors and ground floor which in
effect make the building to be G+3+T
Limit state design approach in accordance with the provisions and requirements of series
of volumes of the 2015 edition of the Ethiopian Building Cod Standard ES EN: 2015 has
been followed for the analysis and design of the building.
An attempt is made to present the 3D conceptual framework of the building as is subjected
to all induced vertical and lateral action due to dead & live loads and seismic actions. 3D
modelling and non-linear frame analysis using ETABS, version 9.7.4 software has been used
in determining the internal design actions in the various structural elements.
Material qualities of C25 concrete and steel grade with minimum yield stress of 400MPa
are used for the design of all structural elements with the assumption that the building will
be constructed following standard procedures and set ups under strict supervision for
quality assurance.

1.3 Design Consideration

1.3.1 Under Gravitational Load

The structure is to be designed to serve the intended functional service in the sense
that it would safely support/carry all imposed load to adequate of level of protection in
such a way that
- All expected permanent (dead) loads are considered with allowance for
uncertainties.
- Code recommended Occupational (live) loads would be considered for
analysis
- For ULS, the structure will be designed to support both amplified transient
and permanent loads according to the code adopted
- At SLS, the structure will be checked to be functional in the sense that
deformations under service load are limited to the minimum possible for
normal functioning.

1.3.2 Under lateral Load [Earth Quake Load]

The site of the project Is addis abeba Corresponding to peak ground acceleration of
0.1g and thus in addition to the gravity dead and live load, the building is to be also
designed for such earth quake effect as per the provision of the code to meet required
ductile behaviour [DCM].

2.2.2 Lateral Loads (Earth Quake load)

The lateral load due to earth quake is generated by the software as per Euro code
provision which is the same as the Ethiopian building code based on the following
basic earth quake parameters stipulated in the code.
a) Earth Quake Parameters
i. Bed Rock Acceleration Ratio:  o = ag/g = 0.1 [ Zone 3 , Addis Ababa]
ii. Soil Type : Type B

iii. Behaviour Factor: q = qokw  1.5 ;

qo =3.0u/ 1 [ u/ 1 =1.3 , frame system, DCM]
qo =3.0 *1.3 = 3.9
kw =1.0 [frame system]
 q = 3.9 *1.0 = 3.90
Behaviour Factor (q) =3.9
iv. Lower Bound Factor:  = 0.20
[Recommended value for horizontal design spectrum]
b) Mass Sources

Sources of loads contributing to the inertia forces due to earth quake effects are identified as
follows as per the provisions stipulated in the code (ES EN 1998: 2015 and ES EN 1990:2015).

No Load Mass source Participation factors

1 Action  2i  =2i (Mass source Factor)
Live load
Category A 0.5 0.3 0.15
Category C 0.5 0.6 0.3
Category H 1 0 0
2 Dead Load 1.0

c) Earth Quake Load Cases

The lateral loads due to earth quake computed after setting the above parameters are then
set to be lateral load cases to be considered in the two orthogonal directions for possible

3. Analysis and Modelling

3.1 Inputs and Cases
Modelling: Load analysis of the building is performed using finite element software
ETAB, Version 2015 and 3D model of the building consisting of all load carrying
structural members including slabs, beams and columns and shear walls is carefully
depicted. The load and material property data with section sizes of slabs, beams,
columns and boundary retaining shear walls specified in the structural drawings are
given as input data.
Method of Analysis: quasi static nonlinear analysis has been performed to
investigate the effect of gravity action of dead and live loads and lateral action of
seismic effect. The nonlinear analysis stipulated in here is deemed to include the
second order effects in the form of P- analysis and the result of such rigorous
analysis can be directly used for verification of ULS and SLS for different structural
members and the entire structure of the building corresponding to the appropriate
load cases and combinations.
Primary Seismic Elements: The primary seismic elements are designed to resist the
expected earthquake force on the building. Because the structure at hand is a two way
solid slab system with beam column frame and the slab considered to act only as a
rigid diaphragm in connecting the vertical elements, the slab is treated as non-seismic
element with a stiffness value of almost zero.
Stiffness of Structural Members for Assessing structure's stability and safety:
The Ethiopian Building Code Standard EBCS ES EN 1998: 2015 (section 5.7) states
that maximum deformations due to the seismic design situation shall be calculated
from an analysis of the structure in the seismic design situation, in which the
contribution of secondary seismic elements to lateral stiffness is neglected and
primary seismic elements are modelled with their cracked flexural and shear
stiffness. Thus, the bending and shear stiffness of seismic elements (Column, beam
and shear wall) is reduced by half (ES EN 1998 section 4.3.1(7)) and the torsional
stiffness of beams and columns is reduced by 90%.
G+2 BUILDING Structural Design Report

3.2 Modelling Assumptions

The structure at hand is modelled to represent the actual building to be constructed
to the possible extent. The cross section of beam column frame, slab and wall
elements is as per the structural drawing. Code recommended loadings have been set
and combinations of loading to represent extreme events have been made to
represent different ULS scenarios. The structural system at hand consists of vertical
and lateral load resisting elements connected by horizontal diaphragm effect of floor
slab for lateral load effect of earth quake.
Finally 3D model of the building is created using ETAB finite element software with
the following major considerations and assumptions:
1. Vertical and lateral bracing elements are modelled to be fixed at the base level.
2. The stiffness of the load bearing elements is evaluated by taking into account the
effect of cracking. The elastic flexural and shear stiffness properties are taken to be
equal to one half of the corresponding stiffness of the un-cracked element as
recommended by the Ethiopian Code.
3. All areal elements are modelled as shell elements with a stiffness reduction of 0.05.
4. Columns and beams are modelled as line elements.
5. Stairs are not modelled with the structure but their load is transferred to the
supporting beams.
4. Analysis out Put
After creating the 3D model of the building and performing rigorous analysis as
described earlier, the results in terms of internal forces and corresponding deflections
are carefully examined for satisfaction of ULS and SLS and the main analysis output
parameters are highlighted as follows.
4.1. Overall Stability
The 3D analysis model of the building successfully run without warning and any
defects. All main structural elements are found to be safe with respect to ULS. No
negative reaction at the base of columns and shear walls in all cases of load
combinations and no local failure of structural members is observed. Therefore the
over all building is found to be stable and safe globally.
G+2 BUILDING Structural Design Report

4.3 Normalized Normal Force for Ductility Requirement

One of the most important parameter to ensure enough ductility behaviour against the
most probable threatening effects of actions is to limit normal stresses for compression
members susceptible for failure under compression due to seismic action. In this regard
the maximum relative normal force at critical sections for columns and shear walls are
evaluated for critical load combinations and found to be well below the limit set in the
code requirement for DCM. Filtered set of data for critical load combination and critical
members columns are compiled as follows:

5. Design of Structural Members

G+2 BUILDING Structural Design Report

5.1 Slabs
Ribbed and Solid two way slab beam system is used for suspended floor at all levels
including the ground floor and roof level. Thickness of slab is proportioned to satisfy
minimum depth for serviceability requirement of deflection
• Load

Permanent dead load and occupational live loads defined in the section 2.2 previously are
considered to act with combination of actions
G+2 BUILDING Structural Design Report

• Analysis and Design

The slabs at all floors are included in the 3D model of the building and subjected to the
characteristic dead and live loads defined earlier and to be amplified by the appropriate
factor in the respective load combinations. Moment contours in the two orthogonal
directions for critical load combination due to gravity load are used to determine the
reinforcements. Prepared templates of Reinforcement tables are used in proportioning
amount of reinforcements with 180mm thickness of slab at suspended floors for practical
rang of moment intervals.

MODEL.EDB Plan View - TERRACE - Z = 12 (m) Longitudinal Reinforcing (Eurocode 2-2004)

G+2 BUILDING Structural Design Report

5.2 Beams
The reinforcement for beams is made based on the design output values of the
software in accordance with EUROCODE2 – 1992 in which the same factor of safety
as that of ES EN 1992 is used and found to give accurate values. Correspondingly
the steel areas for longitudinal bar of flexural reinforcement and stirrup spacing for
shear reinforcements are decided based on the provision of design output value of
the analysis model directly from the software. Correspondingly, analysis output of
steel areas for flexural and shear reinforcements are shown in the following plan
view layout of beams at each floor.
Stiffness Consideration
In calculating displacements, the code requires that the flexural
and shear stiffness of concrete structures reflect the effective stiffness
consistent with the level of cracking expected at the initiation of yield of
the reinforcement. If accurate stiffness values are cant be calculated (via pushover
analysis) the code allows the effective stiffness to be based upon half ( 50%)
of the gross sections stiffness for primary structures.
G+2 BUILDING Structural Design Report

5.3 Columns
As explained earlier, 3D analysis model of the building is carefully depicted to
incorporate slabs, beams, columns and all other basic structural components and
non-linear analysis including second order or the P -delta effect is performed.
Such rigorous and evolved analysis is believed to realistically represent the 3D
actions and effects of different cases of loading on the entire building and the
results are relatively expected to be accurate.
Correspondingly the steel areas for longitudinal reinforcement and stirrup spacing
for shear reinforcements of columns are decided based on the provision of design
output value of the analysis model directly from the software. Steel areas for
flexural and shear reinforcements are shown in the following elevation view layout
of columns on each at each floor.

And shear stiffness of concrete structures reflect the effective stiffness
Consistent with the level of cracking expected at the initiation of yield of
The reinforcement. If accurate stiffness values are can’t be calculated (via pushover

of the gross sections stiffness for primary structures.

G+2 BUILDING Structural Design Report

5.4 Foundation
Based on the recommendation of soil investigation report, isolated footing is used for
foundation of the building. As per the provision of soil investigation report, allowable
bearing capacity from 350Kpa is recommended design of footings. End reaction for critical
load combination is printed out and the following footing types are designed using the
updated design pressure for factored load corresponding to the above mentioned allowable
bearing pressures. Detail calculation sheets for each footing are attached subsequently.
