1. Get acquainted on how the game is started and how players play the game.

2. Demonstrate understanding in scoring a softball game.

3. Familiarize with the different faults and violations in softball.

I. ELICIT

Good morning class. Hope you enjoyed our previous topic. Im sure you will be more excited as we go
deeper with our discussion in softball.

II. ENGAGE

Im sure that you have witnessed a softball game in the T.V. or during your Intrams. Did you ever keep
an eye on the referee, how he starts the game , how he awards points or how he calls for the faults and
violations committed by the players in playing. Hope you did it.

III. EXPLORE

Today our discussion is about rules of play in softball. Let me give you a brief summary of the rules of
playing the game.

A softball game is played by innings, usually an official match is played 7 innings. In each innings,
each team bats until three batters have been put out. The team takes turn in batting the ball. Officially
which team to bat first is decided by means of a toss coin. The most common rule is that the home team
bats second. Batting second is advantageous. The team on bat is called the batting team while the
defensive team is called the fielding team. Batting order is the list of players in accordance with their
turn to bat.The positions in a softball team are the following ; the pitcher in the middle of the infield,
who initiates the action by throwing the ball towards the home plate. The catcher catches the ball if it is
not a hit. A pitch ball is strike if it passes the strike zone (space above the knee and below the armpit of
the batter in his normal batting position ) and balls if it passes outside the strike zone. The infielders are
the first baseman, second baseman, third baseman and the short stop. There are 3 outfielders, the left
fielder, right fielder and center fielder.

Each team has 9 players in its batting order, and they must stick to that order throughout the game.
A play begins with the batter waiting to hit the pitch ball from the pitcher. If the batter hits the ball into
the field of play, the batter runs to first base and can run to as many bases as he deems fit without
getting put out.

A batter gets 3 strikes(a swing and a miss or a ball over the plate and what is deemed as the strike
zone by an umpire he or she is put out. If there are 4 balls ( a pitch that did not pass in the strike zone)
the batter is allowed to go first base without being put out.

When a batter advances to bases, he is now a base runner. Base runners attempt to reach the base,
where they are safe and can remain on the base until next batter comes up. The defensive players
attempt to prevent this by putting the runners out using the ball, runners put out must leave the playing
field.

Runs are scored when a player commits a circuit of the diamond before there are 3 outs in the
innings. If the player hits the ball over the outfield fence in the fair territory, it’s a homerun, and the
batter can circle all the bases without being put out.

SCORING
In softball, if you score a point it is termed as run. A run is scored when a player has touched all the 4
bases in order, proceeding counterclockwise around them. They need not be touched on the same play,
a batter may remain safely at the base while play proceeds and attempt to advance bases on a latter
play. A run is not scored if the last out was a forced out or occurs during the same play that the runner
crosses home plate. For instance if a runner on the third base prior to a hit, and he or she crosses home
elate after an out is made, either on the batter or another runner, the run is not counted.

FAULTS AND VIOLATIONS

1. A fly ball caught by the defensive team.

2. The batted ball was caught by the defensive team ahead of the base runner.

3. Strikes three was caught by the catcher.

4. A base runner leaves the base before the pitcher delivers the pitch ball.

5. A base runner was tag by the baseman before touching the base.

6. A base runner overruns second base.

7.A foul ball higher than the batters head was caught by the catcher.

8. The pitcher in pitching the ball steps more than one normal step in releasing the ball.

9. The feet of the batter are not on the batters box while batting the ball.

IV.EXPLAIN

1. Explain how a softball game is started.

- A softball game typically starts with a coin toss to determine which team will bat first and
which will play defense. The team at bat takes their positions in the batter’s box, and the
opposing team spreads out in the field. The pitcher from the defensive team then delivers the
ball to the batter, initiating the game. The batter attempts to hit the pitched ball, and the
defensive team aims to prevent runs by fielding the ball and making plays. The game
progresses with each team taking turns at bat and in the field.

2. Explain briefly how a player scores a run in softball.

- A player scores a run in softball by successfully touching each of the four bases (first, second, third,
and home plate) in order after hitting the ball. This involves running from home plate to first base,
then to second, third, and finally returning to home plate. A run is scored each time a player
completes this circuit without being tagged or forced out by the opposing team.

V. ELABORATE

1.Formulate a generalization statement as to when the umpire calls strike and balls.

2. Give a generalization statement as to how the team on bat and the fielding team had their turn to bat
in every inning.
VI.EVALUATE

“ball.”
