TAMAN NASIONAL BROMO TENGGER SEMERU
Plataran Bromo is located just 16km from Mt. Bromo in Bromo Tengger Semeru National Park, which can
be reached via a 30-minute drive up the mountain in a 4WD Jeep. The national park is named after its two
mountains - Mount Semeru and Mount Bromo - and covers a massive area of 800 square km in the center
of East Java. The region is home to the Tengger people; descendants of Indonesia’s storied Majapahit Empire
who continue to preserve its unique mystic heritage and traditions to this day.
Mount Bromo (2,329m) is one of the most iconic sights in Java, standing as the centrepiece of Bromo
Tengger Semeru National Park. Mt Bromo and the neighbouring cone of Mt Semeru bulge out of an even
larger, more ancient crater; a wide open plain known by the Javanese as Segara Wedi (sea of sand). This
desert savannah is crisscrossed by men on horseback wrapped in blankets of batik and ikat fabric; these
cowboys of the caldera are members of the local Tengger tribes. Dwarfed by the vast open expanses of
this lunarscape sits Pura Luhur Poten; a sacred Hindu temple at the heart of Java’s tribal hinterland. Like the
ethereal mist that cloaks the peaks of Bromo and Semeru at sunrise, this epic landscape is shrouded in myth
and legend.
The Tenggerese people of East Java can trace their ancestry back to the Majapahit empire, which ruled the
seas of the Indonesian archipelago around 500 years ago. Today, approximately 100,000 of their descendants
remain in the 30 villages that cling to the foothills and slopes of Mount Bromo. Once a year, during the Hindu
festival of Yadnya Kasada, the Tenggerese people of Probolinggo climb the slopes of the mountain to make
offerings of fruit, rice, vegetables, flowers and sacrifices of chickens and goats to the gods

Bromo is more than just a landscape; it is imbued with the culture and heritage of the tribes who make
that landscape their home. Sacred Bromo lets you discover one of the unique worship rituals that takes
place here, on the slopes of Mount Bromo itself. You will learn the fascinating history of Mount Bromo and
its Tengger tribe, on a trip to a sacred cave hidden away at the foot of the mountain, where a holy fountain
and altar are located. At this spot, the Tenggerese people place offerings on the altar, perform ablutions
with holy water in a ceremony known as tirto aji, and pray to the ancient gods for a prosperous and fertile
future. The site is also a spiritually potent destination for meditation. If you begin your journey during the day,
you may close it with sunset at Bromo Savannah.

Apples are grown in their thousands in the orchards that hug the slopes of the Bromo area, where
local farmers have raised their crop to become one of the most famous farm products in this region.
The apples here are grown in rich volcanic soil, bathed in warm tropical sunshine year-round and
given a refreshingly crisp taste by the clouds of morning mist that sweep up from the depths of the valley
each day. Visit the local farms and learn about the growth cycle of these apple trees and how to care for them.
