CHAPTER 1
Background of the Study
Social media usage has become so ubiquitous in today's society that it has become
a requirement, particularly for students. Social media has evolved into a medium not
just for communication, but also for gathering useful information and expertise. Social
media facilitates the exchange of ideas, opinions, and information by establishing virtual
networks and communities. Social media, by definition, is Internet-based and allows
people to communicate via electronic methods. Human beings have basic wants to
belong and to be related to others, and interpersonal contact is crucial to meeting these
demands (Baumeister & Leary, 1995; Wang, 2013). Interpersonal communication
patterns have altered considerably in recent decades as information technology has
advanced, notably with the rapid expansion of Internet-based social media platforms
(e.g., Facebook, WeChat, Instagram) (Smith & Anderson, 2018; Stone, & Wang, 2018).
The proliferation of social media platforms and accessible Internet access raises the
danger of social media addiction, which is described as the unreasonable and excessive
use of social media to the point where it interferes with other parts of everyday life
(Griffiths, 2000, 2012). Social media addiction has been connected to a variety of
4
emotional, relational, health, and performance concerns. As a result, understanding the
origins, effects, and therapies of social media addiction is crucial.
Today, the world honors communication technology developments that have
broadened the reach of communication via Information and Communication
Technologies (ICTs). Modern communication technology, without a question, has
converted the entire world into a "Global village," but technology, like two sides of a
coin, has both positive and harmful features. It helps people become more aware,
enlightened, and up to date on global affairs. Technology introduces a more efficient
manner of accomplishing things to humanity. Social networking sites include Twitter,
Yahoo Messenger, Facebook Messenger, Blackberry Messenger (BBM), Whatsapp
Messenger, Messenger, Skype, Google Talk, iPhones, and Androids. The majority of
people use these social networking sites to reconnect with old and new acquaintances,
both physical and virtual (Asemah and Edegoh, 2012).
Because of technological growth, the world has changed tremendously, and
technology has become the ideal medium for investigating the broad area of
knowledge. As internet technology has advanced, it has become the primary form of
communication. Whereas two-thirds of the global internet population uses social
networking or blogging sites for communication and connection. SNSs are online
communities of Internet users who want to engage with one another over similar
interests, whether personal, professional, or intellectual (William, Boyd, Densten, Chin,
Diamond & Morgenthaler 2009). Billions of people use social media to share
information and connect with one another. On a more personal level, social media
5
enables you to connect with friends and family, learn new skills, pursue new interests,
and be entertained. On a professional level, you can use social media to expand your
knowledge in a specific field and to build your professional network by connecting with
other industry professionals. At the corporate level, social media enables you to engage
with your audience, solicit feedback from customers, and elevate your brand.
(University of South Florida, n.d)
In essence, social media is heavily used by a wide range of groups, both financially
and in terms of time spent. Furthermore, given the economic reality of the COVID-19
epidemic's decline, social media can be employed in place of other paid learning
application platforms.
According to Ullah and Khan in 2021, the internet and social media play an important
role in people's lives, especially the lives of young people. It is possible to communicate
and build trust in the social media market with the help of this. It can be used in a
variety of ways by students and teachers during the educational process. Facebook,
Twitter, and a slew of other applications are becoming increasingly popular, particularly
among young people. It is where they live, share, and learn, and it is natural that
educators would want to find ways to engage them through these technologies. At the
same time, these new media bring a slew of issues and risks, as well as opportunities.
Creative educators must consider these factors when weighing the benefits and
drawbacks of social media for educational purposes. (Burbules, 2021)
6
Social media has a variety of educational benefits, such as increased communication,
timely information, online socializing, learning, skill advancement, and job growth.
However, there are also negative implications, like identity theft, cyberbullying, and
social isolation. Despite the fact that social media coverage is frequently unfavorable, it
has played an important role in facilitating the dissemination of information regarding
COVID-19. Social media is an information vacuum; it swiftly disseminates both
knowledge and information, allowing for exaggeration, scapegoating, rumor, social
vigilantism, and xenophobia.

Statement of the Research Problem
The primary goal of this research is to evaluate the effects of internet platforms like
Facebook and Instagram on the academic performance of SHS TVL students in the
midst of the new normal. The internet has a significant impact on people, particularly
students. As the pandemic forces individuals to stay at home, the internet helps to
alleviate boredom. Because no one is permitted to go outside, it is one of the simplest
methods to converse with people. However, excessive use of social media platforms
might have severe consequences. According to studies, kids who use the internet
excessively have a poorer level of concentration in class since it decreases their interest
in listening to the lecturers.
This study seeks to find the following questions:
1. What are the effects of Internet Usage to the students in terms of:
1.1. Cognitive Development
1.2. Physical Development
2. What are the Social Media’s effects to the academic performance of the
students in terms of:

Scope and Delimitations
11
Social media is a tool or platform that users can utilize to share content with the
public over the internet. It runs several platforms, including Facebook, Instagram, and
Twitter (Hudson, 2020). Facebook is the most popular social media network as of 2016.
(Greenwood, Perrin, & Maeve, 2016). We can communicate with one another and
create relationships thanks to social media. People, particularly students, rely on social
media in modern times. It has grown in popularity and is frequently used by a big
number of people. Students' use of internet media platforms can have an impact on
their academic achievement, either positively or negatively.
While internet might stimulate students to participate in online learning, as the new
typical form of learning, it can also distract students and damage their learning
capacities (Singh, 2021). Internet usage influences student education. The study of
internet and mobile devices has both advantages and disadvantages, with the principal
advantage being access to course materials, video clips, and the transfer of instructional
notes. Students generally assume that social media and mobile devices are low-cost
and easy means to get relevant information. According to research undertaken in
Western countries, the "emergency remote teaching" caused by the outbreak was
rushed, with poor planning and resource management, potentially aggravating the
problem (Hodges et al. 2020).
Due to a shortage of adequate areas to connect to the Internet and take online
courses, as well as the long-term impacts of the severe economic recession on
12
children's health, well-being, and scholastic outcomes, lower-income families are more
likely to struggle with home-schooling (Van Lancker and Parolin 2020). Both students
and instructors may feel a lack of feedback in online learning, according to Atchley et al.
(2013). These problems have the potential to harm student retention, satisfaction, and
performance. Distance learning, like traditional teaching, has proponents who claim that
online education creates students who perform on par with or better than their regular
classroom colleagues.
Hypothesis
13
If internet usage increases students' academic performance in the new normal,
then it can be used effectively in e-learning. If students' academic output is reduced by
the use of internet in the new normal, then employing internet platforms for e-learning
is useless.

Review of Related Literature
Following a thorough and in-depth search by the researcher, this Chapter summarizes
the pertinent literature and studies. It is done in order to improve comprehension of the
research or study.
1. Effects of Internet Usage to the Students
1.1 Advantages
Internet usage has helped students interact with one another by allowing them to
converse and discuss class-related issues via social media platforms. Students internet
because it is a lot more convenient and faster way for them to communicate and
express their views and ideas. It is a tool for students to make and meet new friends.
Mustaq (2018).
Social media is a collection of online platforms that people can freely use or access.
It allows students to share data with the general public and collaborate with others.
Because social media and internet is one of the most convenient ways to contact with
others, it also assists students in gaining ideas and specific information that they may
use for their education (Holotescu & Grosseck, 2013).
1.2 Disadvantages
If a user uses social media excessively, it might lead to addiction. Students who
spend too much time on social media sites have a negative impact on their academic
15
achievement. It reduces their responsibility for work completion and distracts students
from focusing on their education. It reduces their social interactions and negatively
impacts their mental and emotional health (Kisantas, Dabbagh, Chirinos, & Fake, 2015).
Using too many internet platforms can have a negative impact on people, particularly
students, as it can lead to bad habits such as addiction. It causes kids to rely so much
on internet that they become inundated with the idea of meeting their peers online
rather than in person (Neelakandan, Annamalai, Rayen, & Arunajsmine, 2020).
1.1 Physical Health
Daily internet use was associated with the reinforcement of health behaviours at
both ends of the health behaviour spectrum, whereas moderate intensity social media
use was associated with the highest levels of physical activity and the lowest sleep
adequacy among those with moderate health behaviours. Thus, identifying an optimal
level of internet media use that benefits a variety of health behaviours would benefit
teenagers who fall in the middle of the health behaviour spectrum the most. (Shimgo et
al., 2019)
1.2 Mental Health
Recent years have seen a surge in research on internet media usage and adolescent
mental health, with numerous studies examining whether increased use of social media
is associated with a variety of mental health concerns, including depression, body image
concerns and disordered eating, and externalizing problems. In general, this research
16
produced inconsistent data, with many indicating a minor but significant harmful
influence of internet use on mental health. A growing corpus of research is currently
attempting to build on these findings by conducting more nuanced examinations of
how, why, and for whom social media use may have a beneficial or detrimental effect
on youth development. Internet encompasses a diverse array of digital tools, making it
difficult to quantify its total impact on youngsters. (Nesi, 2020)
2. Problematic Use of Internet
Associations and interrelationships between addictive internet behavior and
psychoactive substance usage have been established in a number of European
countries. There is a tiny but significant link between problematic video game use and
social media use (Griffiths et al., 2013), as well as bidirectional links between
problematic gaming, gambling, and internet use (Karlsson, Broman & Hakansson,
2019). Excessive Internet use has been linked to an increased risk of alcohol and other
substance use and misuse (Nesi & Prinstein, 2019). Furthermore, a link has been
observed between time spent on social media and episodic heavy drinking.
3. Effects of Internet Usage to the Academic Performance
The internet's influence on education, according to Singh (2021), is becoming a
driving force in today's linked learning environment. Students now have access to new
educational options because to the internet. Social networking has numerous
educational benefits. However, there are a number of drawbacks. Social media
platforms have grown increasingly important in students' social lives. It is now generally
17
acknowledged as a platform for enhancing student involvement and capacity in many
schools. Students can use these platforms to interact, communicate, obtain information,
and do research. Because it allows people from all over the world to connect, the
internet is the most powerful means of communication. The internet's widespread
acceptance is one of the key reasons for these different possibilities and the way it
affects education.
There is a direct association between internet use and academic performance of
university students. The negative side of technological growth, on the other hand, has
resulted in quandaries such as the erosion of real-life values, particularly among
students, who make up the bulk of users connecting via social networking sites. The
primary goal of online social networking services is to create and reflect social
relationships between people who share common interests and/or activities. Students
are enticed to abandon homework and reading time in favor of online talking with
friends, thanks to the explosion of social networking services available on the internet.
Many kids are now addicted to the current internet craze, which includes Facebook,
Twitter, and other social media platforms. (2015) (Osharive)
Undergraduate, self-directed, and other educational students have commended
Facebook and other social media platforms for offering new, socially engaged
educational experiences. However, in order to situate and qualify this promise, a
theoretical and historical evaluation of these media in the context of earlier media
developments is required. The analysis of popular social media platforms presented
here, in particular, raises the question of whether social media platforms foster a critical
18
component of learning - the ability to argue and disagree social media for education,
demonstrating the importance of media theory and history for e-learning research.
