machines.

(1) Exhaust Silencers design is not yet included in AX-C module. This is available now as ExTuner ™ which is sold separately by Najah
Engineering.

AX-01 Exhaust Noise Silencing Sound Calculations (ISO 6798):

This design sheet enables to do either do the exhaust noise calculations to find the optimum exhaust silencer
attenuations (dB's) at all 8 frequencies, or if you have a silencer with a known dB's you can verify if it suites your diesel
engine. Of course, you have to define criteria such as 90 dBA at 1 m or 75 dBA at 7 m and so on. You have to have the
engine exhaust noise SPL or SWL data from the engine manufacturer. If not known then you can use the exhaust noise
estimator, which is part of NEC Acostix to get the engine exhaust noise.

If the engine is inside a room or enclosure with reverberant characteristics then you need to enter the room dimensions.
To be much more precise you need to enter the average sound absorption coefficient of the room internal walls. If not
known to you then you can use the absorption coefficient calculator to find them.

At the end, the software will give you the results and summary of all calculations. You can always hide or show this
calculation for the purpose of submittal to your customers.

AX-02 Enclosure/Room Wall Design & Verification Module:
This sheet calculates the overall SRI (TL) of an acoustic wall or barrier that may contain doors and windows.
The module allows selection of wall configuration either single plate, double plate or masonry wall. You will enter all the
details and you will see the results instantly as SRI and reflected on the sound attenuation.

The sheet enables you to select the windows and doors dimensions, Windows glass and thickness configuration.

You need to enter the wall, door and windows dimensions.

Then the sheet will calculate the overall SRI of the assembly. This SRI can then be used as a known SRI
Value to complete the wall design for enclosure or rooms as stated above.

AX-03 Inlet/Discharge Attenuators Design & Room Sound Calculations:

This is a powerful design sheet, which does two things at the same time. It designs the rectangular attenuator by finding
its dimensional parameters and acoustic characteristics to achieve the noise attenuation from one side and it gives the
dimensional parameters that achieve maximum allowable pressure drop across the attenuator air ducts. The sheet can
do Four (4) functions: design inlet attenuator, design discharge attenuator, verify inlet attenuator and verify discharge
attenuator. You need to enter the engine surface noise SPL data, airflow data, noise criteria; overall aperture height and
width and then you select the number of airways and the thickness of the splitters. Of course there are rules how to
select them which you can learn in our noise. You can fine-tune your selection to get the best results of
acoustic and pressure drop performance. You can always select to show or hide the detailed calculations. The sheet
allows you to select the acoustic materials filling details and enter the average room absorption coefficient, which can be
calculated by NEC Acostix.

Note: In the AX-05 the discharge attenuator has the following extra features:

1. Add up to 4 exhaust fans with their air flows, diameters and SWL
2. Add discharge deflector
3. Add vertical attenuator. This will take you to another module to design it and use it in the discharge.

7 Saudi Arabia Office P.O. Box 2841, Alkhobar – 31952 Tel: +966-50-4992146
Technical Support: [email protected]
AX-04 Acoustic Louvers Design and Room Sound Calculations:
Similarly this design sheet enables to design the acoustic louvers to achieve the required acoustical and airflow
performance. You can select either to design inlet or design discharge louvers. You can select among 5 different louver
shapes. Other configurations can also be added upon request.

You have to enter the noise source SPL/SWL. You need to enter the selected acoustic filling materials absorption
coefficients and thickness. You need also to select the perforation configuration. You have to specify the noise criteria
and distance. You can select if the room is reverberant or not and accordingly enter the absorption coefficient data,
which can also be calculated by NEC Acostix tools.

Then you can choose your design parameters. Louvers blade thickness, Louver depth, louver blades spacing and free area
percentage of the overall aperture.

The software will display the resultant noise and air pressure drop for the selected design. You can fine-tune your design
parameters to optimize the results. Of course you can select to show or to hide the calculations before you print the
report.

AX-05 Diesel Generator Sound Attenuation Package:

 This is stand-alone module that is sold separately from the AX-00 or AX-C
 This module designs the acoustic enclosure for diesel generators applications to meet certain noise rating or criteria.
 The module is fed with the engine noise data and then the designer will select the dimensional parameters of the
wall, windows, inlet/discharge attenuation, and exhaust silencing to meet the criteria.
 The module allows you to enter either SPL or SWL data. You may also select between baffle type attenuators and
acoustic louvers for inlet and discharge aperture attenuations. All design parameters and results are watched
instantly at the same time on the same page for all parameters. You can have up to two inlet attenuator
configurations plus one inlet louvers at the same time, while discharge attenuator gives the ability to add vertical
deflector and another vertical attenuator for super silent requirements. The discharge also can have up to Four (4)
exhaust fans that ventilate the room/enclosure in the case of remote radiator generator sets.

Jordan Head Office P.O. Box 1474, Amman – 11947 Tel: +962 79 806 1145
8 Saudi Arabia Office P.O. Box 2841, Alkhobar – 31952 Tel: +966-50-4992146
Technical Support: [email protected]
AX-06 HVAC Duct Sound Calculations:
This module uses the forward duct attenuation calculation method, where the criteria of the sound pressure level in the
room is selected and the calculations start from the AHU down through the ducts to the outlet then inside the room. All
attenuations in the main ducts, branch ducts and elbows are configured and selected. The module will calculate the
attenuations and deduct from the AHU sound power (SWL). The result will be sound power level value at the room
outlet. Then this will be corrected by the room reverberation characteristics to get the actual sound pressure level inside
the room. This will be compared with the selected NCXX criteria and the difference will be the additional attenuations
that must be added. This can be achieved by reconfiguring the ducts again or just by inserting attenuator next to the
AHU. The sheet complies with ASHRAE / ARI 885 standards. The room side and the atmosphere modules is used for
supply/return sound calculations.

AX-07 Acostix ™ Sound Calculations and Tools Module:

1. Cover Sheets Perforation Configurations and Calculations Tool:

These tools enable you to find the Transparency Index (TI) and the open area percent of the perforated sheet used to
cover the acoustic materials used in air ducts. These two parameters affect the acoustic performance of the perforated
sheet and therefore affect the overall acoustic performance of the air duct assembly. Of course, the higher the TI the
better it will be for the noise absorption of the acoustic filling but this may not be possible due to the perforation sheet
mechanical characteristics and strength. You enter the perforation geometry and the sheet will calculate the TI and P.
These two parameters are inputs to the design of the walls, attenuators and louvers. The resultant of this sheet are the
TI, P and the access factor, which will be multiplied by the absorption coefficient of the acoustic material. In other words,
this access factor downgrades the acoustic materials sound absorption capability.

9 Saudi Arabia Office P.O. Box 2841, Alkhobar – 31952 Tel: +966-50-4992146
Technical Support: [email protected]
2. Engine Exhaust Noise/Surface Noise and Air Flow Estimator:

You must always get the Nosie data and airflow rates from the diesel engine manufacturer. This tool shall be used only if
you cannot get the data from the.
This tool enables the designer to estimate the engine exhaust noise SPL or SWL, engine surface noise SPL and the inlet
and discharge airflow. You just enter the engine KW and then select from the drop down lists different characteristics of
the engine, which must be known if the engine is physically available.

The software will display the engine exhaust and surface noise data over the Eight (8) frequencies and the inlet and
discharge airflow. These results can be used to design walls, attenuators and louvers if the data is not available from the
manufacturer.

3. Free Field / Inside Rooms (reverberant) Noise Calculations Tool:

Sometimes you may need to calculate the noise in the free filed if the noise is knows at some location.
This sheet allows for noise calculations of SPL or SWL at different distances in the free field. You can either do the
calculation for a single dB figure or over the Eight (8) frequencies.

SPL vs SWL:

The difference between SPL and SWL: SPL is the sound pressure level =20 log P/Pref. Pis sound pressure in N/m2 and Pref =
20 x 10-6 N/m2, while SWL is sound power level = 10 log W/Wref, where W is sound intensity in Watts and Wref = 10-
12
Watt. The sound is coming out from the source as SWL and when it travels spherically its intensity will be distributed
over sphere area which makes it pressure SPL
You may also need to do calculations of noise inside the room if the noise source is placed at certain distance and you
need to measure noise at certain point inside the room taking into consideration the reverberation time of the room.
This sheet does this. You can do this as a single figure or you can enter the noise data of the source in SPL or SWL over
the octave band, and enter all other details of the room. The resulting information will be the noise level at the point you
selected. You can select to show or hide the calculations before printing the report.

Jordan Head Office P.O. Box 1474, Amman – 11947 Tel: +962 79 806 1145
10 Saudi Arabia Office P.O. Box 2841, Alkhobar – 31952 Tel: +966-50-4992146
Technical Support: [email protected]
4. Average Room Absorption Coefficient Calculations Tool:

This tool helps designers calculate the room average sound absorption coefficient over the octave band.
The sheet allows to enter the room dimensions, and from the drop down lists one may select the sidewall, end walls,
roof and floor material. The results of this sheet will be the average absorption coefficients and the reverberation times.
These results are very valuable when calculating sound from inside rooms through walls, attenuators and louvers.
The result of this sheet is automatically updated in modules AX-02, AX-03 and AX-04 room reverberation information.

5. Pressure Drop Calculator Tool:

This sheet helps gives the pressure drop across different duct systems, which you may choose from the drop down list.

It helps when sometimes the inlet air or the discharge air needs to be ducted 45 degrees or 90 degrees for some
distance.

MANUALLY SELECTED MUFFLER DATA ENTRY

If we want to verify a known muffler insertion loss to meeting, the acceptance criteria Noise rating (NRXX). Here you enter the sound
attenuation of the muffler that you want to verify. This data you should get from the muffler manufacturer.

SOUND ABSORPTION COEFFICIENT DATA ENTRY

When you select reverberant filed this means that your generator is located inside a room that has both absorption and reflection
characteristics (this is not likely the case). You need to enter values for the room average absorption coefficients. These can be
estimated using the ALPHA estimator tool. The higher the coefficients the better the absorption and the less the reverberation noise
will be.

REQUIRED MUFFLER (SILENCER) ATTENUATIONS

When you select the program to select the muffler dB’s according to the NRXX that you selected you get this result. These are the
insertion loss dB’s for the optimal muffler that will meet the selected NRXX. After that, you can select the suitable muffler from your
favorite supplier catalogue.

DETAILED SOUND CALCULATIONS:

Case-1: If selected the Program will find Silencer dB’s:

Exhaust Noise SWL0 : This is the sound power level in dB (ref: 10-12 watt) of the un-damped exhaust noise
NRXX : This is the noise rating selected that must be achieved
Required Silencer dB : This is the required silencer dB’s that meets the NRXX you specified.
Room Time (sec) : This is the reverberation time at different frequencies applicable if you selected reverberant filed.
Rev time correction : This is the 10 log (Rev Time) in dB

Room Constant : This represents the absorption coefficients of the room and the total absorption area in m2
Room Correction : This is the attenuation due to the reverberation in the room.
Distance correction : How much the sound pressure level will decrease due to the distance, in dB
Directivity correction : Directivity of the exhaust source to the receiver point
Resultant SPL (dB) : SPL at the measuring point with the silencer installed
dBA scale weightings : dBA filter. This gives the actual SPL the human ear can hear at different frequencies.

Case-2: If selected to select the muffler manually and verify its compliance to the selected NRXX:

3. Wall Design & Sound Calculations Module
APPLICATION

1. To design walls for enclosures that contain noisy machines such as diesel generators, compressors, fans, pumps, motors, gas
turbines,..etc.
2. Designing the wall means finding its Sound Reduction Index (Transmission Loss). The design of the wall is done by selecting
the steel plate configuration, acoustic filling materials and the internal wall perforated sheet configuration.
3. The software will do the sound calculations and check if the designed wall meets the noise criteria set by the customer
and/or regulation.

At the beginning, you select what you want to do from the drop down list and then select your operating ambient temperature and
altitude.

SPL/SWL DATA:
Enter either SPL or SWL data in the table below. You first need to select the type of data SPL or SWL. If you selected SPL then specify at
what distance this SPL data is measured. Usually it is measured at 1 meter. Normally if this SPL is for a diesel engine it is measured by
the manufacturer in accordance to ISO 6798. If other than a diesel engine it is measured according to ISO 3744. The software uses SWL
in the calculations. Therefore for the software to calculate SWL from the given SPL you need to enter the machine envelope
dimensions. This is the minimum height, width and length of a box that envelops the machine. Please notice that only the machine
which gives the noise shall be considered. If any major part(s) is(are) attached to this machine that is not emitting noise it should not
be included within the envelope. For a diesel engine driving ac generator only the engine itself shall be considered and not with the
alternator.

WALL SYSTEM CONFIGURATION DATA:

The wall system consists of the wall itself, the door(s) and the windows(s). The software allows for two doors and two windows per
wall. In the wall configuration & dimensions block shown below, you need to enter the enclosure dimensions and select the number of
doors and number of windows in the door.
Then you enter the door(s) and window(s) dimensions in meters.

REVERBERATION ROOM DATA:
The block below shows the values of average absorption coefficients that will appear automatically here.
These values resulted from the Alpha Module where you have to configure the room internal wall acoustic lining details.

WALL DESIGN PARAMETERS:

Enter design parameters for the wall configuration:

Wall Configuration Type : This is drop down list to select either single plate or double with air gap
Inner steel plate thickness : If you selected double plate this will appear, otherwise it will be just steel plate thickness
Lining Material : This is drop down list to select the filling materials that will be used in the wall
Density of filling materials : This is the density of the porous acoustic materials used. This could be Rockwool, foam or any
Fiberglass. Enter the value in Kg/m3
Lining thickness : Enter the uncompressed thickness of the lining material in mm
Perf sheet thickness : Enter the thickness of the perforation sheet used in mm
Volume : This is the internal volume of the room/enclosure and it will automatically appear
Internal surface area : This is the internal area of all walls, ceiling and floor. It will automatically appear.
Outer Plate Thickness : If double plate is selected this will appear.
Air Gap : If double plate is selected this will appear. This is the air gap between the two plates
Perforation Sheet P % : This will appear automatically. This is the perforation percentage %

This gives the estimated Sound Reduction Index of the wall (without doors and windows).

Alternatively you can also select the Masonry Wall. Then you select from a big list of different wall types and STC ratings.

DOORS DESIGN PARAMETERS:

The below block allows to enter the design parameters of the doors in similar way as done in the wall itself above.

This gives the estimated Sound Reduction Index of each door individually.

WINDOWS DESIGN PARAMETERS:

The below block allows to enter the design parameters of the windows used in the wall system. You may select the windows style;
single or double layer. Enter the materials used; glass or plastic. Enter the thickness of each layer in mm and finally enter the air gap
between the two layers in mm.

This will give the SRI’s of each window individually and at the end, the SRI of the complete wall system will be also displayed as shown
above which will include the effect of the doors and windows.

DETAILED NOISE CALCULATIONS (Design Mode)

Using the above obtained designed value for the wall system the software will do the calculations based on the distance given in the
criteria and wall system SRI’s. The results of the calculations will be displayed in dBA. This will be the predicted sound level at the
specified distance. The following list gives definition for each term used in the calculations:

Engine SWL0 : This is the sound power level in dB (ref: 10-12 watt) of the source

Distance Correction : How much the SPL will decrease due to distance attenuation in dB from the wall to the receiving point
Other correction : Other contributions by other systems in dB
SRI (designed) : This is the resultant SRI from the design parameters that was previously selected.
SWL (ext) : This is the Sound Power Level emitted from the wall outside.
SPL at receiver : SPL at the measuring point with the attenuator installed
dBA scale weightings : dBA filter. This gives the actual SPL the human ear can hear at different frequencies.

DETAILED NOISE CALCULATIONS (SRI to meet certain NRXX Mode):

If you selected at the top of the wall design page to design a wall system (Find SRI) then you will get the SRI (designed) dB’s displayed
as shown above. If you selected to find the required SRI of the wall to meet the noise criteria (NRXX) then the software will display the

required SRI’s as shown below inside the red frame. In this case the specified criteria, for example NR57 will appear as given in the
place of SPL2 (measured at the receiver) as shown below.

DETAILED NOISE CALCULATIONS (Verify given SRI to meet certain NRXX Mode):
If SRI’s of the wall system are known, then you select this option at the top of the page. The software will verify if using this wall with
these SRI’s will meet the noise criteria or not. In this case, you need to enter the SRI’s of the wall system. You enter the dB’s of the SRI
for each part of the wall system and the software will calculate the effective SRI of the wall system. At the same time, the resultant SPL
at the receiver is displayed in front of you in either green color (if within the criteria) or red color (if outside the criteria range).

4. Rectangular Attenuators Design:
APPLICATION
1. To design rectangular duct type attenuators for both inlet air and discharge air. The design means determine the dimensional
details of the attenuator parts and properties of acoustic materials filling used and perforation configuration.
2. To verify if a certain inlet or discharge attenuator (designed by others) meet noise criteria at certain distance.
3. The software does detailed sound calculations to verify if the designed or the selected attenuators meet specified sound pressure
levels and pressure drop.

WHAT YOU WANT TO DO:

Note: You can enter data or change parameters in any of the area with blue color cells.
In the screen below you can enter your project name and select what you want to do. You can select either design inlet attenuator,
design discharge attenuator, verify inlet attenuator or verify discharge attenuator.

When selecting design inlet or discharge attenuator the below block (verify attenuator I.L.) will be hidden. It will only appear when you
select verify inlet or discharge attenuator. The purpose of verification is to see if the attenuator designed by others meet the noise
criteria or not through the sound calculations. You need to enter the insertion losses of the attenuator in the blue area below. In the
above box you need also to select the inlet air temperature and altitude. This version also allows you to use TWO attenuators in series
separated by a 1 meter duct to achieve very high attenuations. This can be achieved by selecting No of attenuators in series = 2.
Because attenuators are used to attenuate sound coming from sources inside rooms to outside receiver point the rooms are usually
reverberant. This means the walls, the ceiling and floor reflect and/or absorb sound according to their sound absorbing materials
coefficients. The room average absorption coefficients will automatically appear here. Refer to the ALPHA Tool for details. The
software accordingly calculates the reverberation time of the room in seconds at different octave frequencies. These results will be
used in the sound calculation. The total sound measured at the receiver point will be the sum of the direct path sound (without
reflections) plus the reverberation sound which will result from the reflections.

SPL/SWL DATA:
Enter either SPL or SWL data in the table above. You first need to select the type of data SPL or SWL. If you selected SPL then specify at
what distance this SPL data is measured. Usually it is measured at 1 meter. Normally if this SPL is for a diesel engine, the manufacturer
measures it in accordance to ISO 6798. If other than a diesel engine, it is measured according to ISO 3744. The software uses SWL in
the calculations. Therefore, for the software to calculate SWL from the given SPL you need to enter the machine envelope dimensions.
This is the minimum height, width and length of a box that envelops the machine. Please notice that only the machine, which gives the
noise, shall be considered. If any major part(s) is (are) attached to this machine that is not emitting noise it should not be included
within the envelope. For a diesel engine that drives ac generator, only the engine itself shall be considered and not with the alternator

discharge attenuators will be 30-40 deg C

Note: In the verification mode all design parameters will be hidden (not required) only room internal dimensions and distances will be
required.

reverberant room. The reverberant field is defined here, as the field that has both absorptions and reflections and the sound
measured at any point is the combination of the direct path plus the reverberant path. This module does sound calculations inside
rooms or reverberant fields where absorption and refection exist. This module enables the user to find the sound pressure level (SPL)
at any point inside the room/enclosure if we know the source SWL or we know the SPL at certain point. Yu can use the module if you
have only a single figure noise dBA value (like the one measured by any sound level meter) or you can be enter the know SWL or SPL
values at all octave band frequencies.

CASE 1: SWL OR SPL1 ARE AVAILABLE AS SINGL FIGURE:
As you can see in the two figures below (both cases) you need to enter the known SWL or SPL1 values at all octave band frequencies,
enter the room/enclosure internal dimensions and then select the room/enclosure reverberation information represented by average
absorption coefficient. The software suggest to you certain values as follows:

0.05 Nearly empty room with smooth hard walls made of concrete, bricks, plaster or tile.
0.1 Partly empty room, room with smooth walls
0.15 Room with furniture, rectangular machinery room, and rectangular industrial room.
0.2 Irregularly shaped room with furniture, irregularly shaped machinery room or industrial room
0.25 Room with upholstered furniture, machinery or industrial room with a small amount of acoustical material, e.g. partially
Absorptive ceiling, on ceiling or walls.
0.35 Room with acoustical materials on both ceiling and walls.
0.5 Room with large amounts of acoustical materials on ceiling and walls

CASE 2: SWL OR SPL1 ARE AVAILABLE AS OCTAVE BAND:

This case is the same as case-1 expect we enter the values of SWL or SPL1 on all octave band frequencies

9. Room Absorption Estimator:
APPLICATION:
To find the average sound absorption coefficients of the room or enclosure based on the selected internal walls, floor and ceiling
acoustic lining details.

USING THE MODULE:

This tool is very important. Actually you need to start from here whenever you want to design or do sound calculations for
rooms/enclosures. In this tool, you specify the room internal walls, ceiling and floor absorptive characteristics and their effective
areas. As you see in the below figure you can either select to get the best estimate of coefficients or if you know them you can select
Enter room absorption coefficients manually. If you select the software to get your best estimates then you have to select the
sidewalls, end walls, ceiling and floor acoustic lining from the drop down lists. Then enter the coverage of this absorption with relative
to the complete wall in percentage.

RESULTS (GET BEST ESTIMATES CHOICE):

The results are displayed as shown below and the average absorption coefficients at all octave band frequencies are calculated along
with the 60 seconds reverberation time (T60).

RESULTS (ENTER MANUALLY ALL COEFFICIENTS):
If you selected the manual entry of the absorption coefficients of all walls then enter all of them at all frequencies as shown below and
you will again get the average absorption coefficients and 60-second reverberation times (T60):

10. TI & P% Perforation Calculator:

APPLICATION:
To configure the perforation sheet to get transparency Index (TI) that will be automatically reflected on all design modules (Wall,
Attenuator and Louvers).

DATA ENTRY:
This tool helps to find out the Transparency Index (TI) of the perforated sheet that covers the acoustic material.
In general the higher the TI the more transparent the sheet to the sound waves. The TI is very sensitive to the high frequency waves
while it is not so sensitive to the low frequency waves. As a guide, the TI should be typically 1000 or higher. Values lower than 1000
will cause the sheet to reflect the high frequency waves (2000 Hz and higher) and not absorb them.

The parameters are defined below for any sheet. The Se shall be entered below to get the Access Factor (AF) that will affect the
absorption coefficients of the acoustic material underneath.

11. Extended Ducts Pressure Drop Calculator:
APPLICATION:
To find the pressure drop across extensions that are connected to inlet or discharge openings or attenuators.

DATA ENTRY:
When using attenuators we may have to extend the inlet or discharge duct using either straight rectangular duct, 90 deg sharp elbow
or 45 deg sharp elbow or 90 deg curved elbows. Then you select the internal surface characteristics of the selected extension ducts.
The dimensions must be also entered, length of the duct and the temperature of the air flowing in the duct. Enter air flow rate.

The result is the pressure drop as shown above.

DUCT EXTENSION TYPES:

You can choose between these available duct extensions:

12. Diesel Engine Sound Estimator:
APPLICATION:
This tool helps to estimate:

1. Engine Surface Noise and Exhaust Noise SPL/SWL

2. Radiator Air Fan Flow Rate and Air Inlet Flow Rate

This information must always be obtained from the diesel engine manufacturers. When this becomes not possible then use this
estimator. The estimator uses a database of several famous engines at different ratings to get the best estimate.
You select the engine parameters that are related to the rating in KW, speed, strokes, No of cylinders, configuration, filtration,…etc

PARAMETERS SELECTION:
Diesel Engine Rating : Engine ISO 3046 rating in KW
Turbocharger : Select yes or no. This will add turbocharger noise
Length of exhaust pipe : The length of pipe after the flexible joint
Running Speed : Select the speed in rpm for the engine
Strokes : Select either 2 or 4 strokes. Typically, 2 stroke produces higher noise than 4 stroke
Engine configuration : Select line engine or V-Type
No of cylinders : Select number of cylinders. More cylinders means higher SWL
Fuel type : Select type of fuel used
Air Intake Configuration : Select how the engine filtration system is mounted
Exhaust Pipe diameter : Enter the approximate pipe internal diameter in mm

ESTIMATED SOUND & AIRFLOW RESULTS:

The resulting parameters are the inlet airflow, discharge airflow, Firing frequency, engine surface noise SPL and exhaust noise SWL/SPL

13. HVAC Ducts Acoustics Calculations Module:
APPLICATION:
The HVAC Acoustics Module is used to verify the attenuation of selected ducts configuration from the AHU to the terminal at the room
specifying the acceptance criteria as Noise Criteria NC. The module enables you to enter attenuator to achieve the criteria.

PROJECT TITLE BLOCK:

The first block of the sound calculations shown below is where we enter the customer name, project name, building designation, room
no., report date, report no., title, checked by and approved by.

SOURCE SWL AND DUCT SYSTEM SPLIT CONFIGURATION:

Then the next is the sound power level (SWL) of the source noise (AHU fan system) in dB.

Select the SWL Power Split Loss levels from the AHU duct to the room terminal duct.
For example if the AUH duct will split into 3 ducts and each of the 3 ducts will split into 6 ducts then you enter in the first line split into
3 then in the second line split into 6 and so on.

See the diagram below which explains how the duct splitting configuration. The above selection allows three (3) levels of splitting
where:

AHU source duct Level 0

Branch Ducts Level 1
Sub-Branch Ducts Level 2
Outlets Ducts Level 3

DUCT ACOUSTIC CONFIGURATION:

Select all duct types from AHU to the terminal unit where your criteria will hold and for the similar ducts sum up the lengths together.
The sheet allows ten (10) different types of ducts to be entered.

You have to select:

Duct Type : Select either Rectangular Duct, Round Duct

Lining : Select either unlined, lined 25 mm or 50mm. This is the internal duct acoustic lining material.
Dimensions : Select the nearest duct dimensions that matches with you duct. The duct sizes shown are standard ASHRAE
Length : Enter length of the duct in meters

Jordan Head Office P.O. Box 1474, Amman – 11947 Tel: +962 79 806 1145
40 Saudi Arabia Office P.O. Box 2841, Alkhobar – 31952 Tel: +966-50-4992146
Technical Support: [email protected]
RADIUSSED ELBOWS:

The following blocks allows you to select the elbows in your system as follows:

Type : Select Square Elbow, Round Elbows or Square elbows with vanes
Lining : Select either unlined or lined 25 mm
Dimensions : Enter the width of the duct (largest dimension) in mm
Quantity : Select quantity of this type of elbow

OTHER ATTENUATIONS:

This block allows you to enter manually any other attenuation that you want to include and not considered as part of the duct itself or
the elbows. The block allows for up to Five (5) attenuations entered.

SWL AT THE ROOM OUTLET:

The following block will calculate the Sound Power Level coming from the AHU at the outlet just before entering to the room where
we want the criteria (NCxx) to be met:

Outlet End Reflection Loss : Enter the outlet dimensions and the HVAC Acoustics Module will calculate the ERL (End Reflection Loss)
at the outlet. This loss (dB’s) will be added to the duct and elbows attenuations that have been
Previously selected and/or configured.

SWL at the outlet : This is the SWLAHU – All attenuations in the duct including the ERL
Env Adjustment Factor : Difference between sound power levels measured using a free field calibrated reference sound source
and a reverberant field calibrated reference sound source. Sound power measured in accordance with
ASHRAE Standard 130 is based upon a free field calibrated reference sound source and the
Environmental adjustment factors are used to correct these values to those using a reverberant field
Calibrated reference sound source because building spaces more closely represent a reverberant sound
field. Select either ARI 885-90 or ARI 885-98 or None. If you do not know, which one is applicable better
select None.

SOUND CALULATIONS INSIDE THE ROOM:

The sound represented by SWL from the previous will now emit sound inside the room. This sound will be absorbed or reflected inside
the room depending on its volume, average absorption coefficients and outlet directivity:

Room Internal Dimensions : Enter room internal height, width and length in meters
Room Absorption Type : Select either calculated values (enter them manually) or very soft, soft, normal, hard or very hard
Very Soft : Very high absorption. Example: Radio and TV Studios
Soft : High Absorption. Example: Restaurant, Lecture Hall or Theater
Normal : Normal Absorption. Example: Office, Library or Flat
Hard : High Reflection. Example: Hospital and Mosques
Very Hard: Very High Reflection. Example: Large Empty Rooms, Factories and unlined plant rooms

Outlet Directivity : Select outlet directivity. This should range between 1.5 to 8.
For example: If the outlet is in the middle of large wall then the directivity is 2.0.
Distance to the Listener : Enter the distance from the outlet to where the NCxx will be measured.
This is normally between 0.7 to 1.5 meters

CASE-1: SOUND ATTENUATOR INSERTION LOSS IS KNOWN. THEN VERIFY:

If you selected Attenuator then you should enter the insertion loss of the attenuator to verify if the above system along with the room
acoustic properties will achieve which NC.

CASE-2: NOISE CRITERIA NCXX MUST BE ACHIEVED:

In this mostly used case is you fix the criteria as specified by the customer or building/health codes and then find what attenuator
should be fitted to achieve these criteria.

In either cases, the resultant sound pressure level at the listener (measuring point) will be displayed in the curve below. For case-1, the
curve must be completely below the NC curve to comply otherwise attenuator must be reconsidered.
