Btech Me 3 Sem Engineering Thermodynamics Jun 2017

The document is an exam for Engineering Thermodynamics that contains two parts - Part A with short answer questions and Part B with longer multi-part questions. Part A contains 6 short questions defining terms like control volume, coefficient of performance, and Joule-Thomson coefficient. Part B contains 4 longer questions, including calculating work done during different compression processes of air, determining changes in internal energy and entropy during heat transfer processes, and explaining properties of mixtures at different states for saturated water and steam. The exam tests knowledge of key thermodynamics concepts through definitions and applying relationships and processes to example systems and scenarios.

(Mechanical Engineering)
Time: 3 Hours Max. Marks: 60
Note: All Questions from PART-A are to be answered at one place.
Answer any FOUR questions from PART-B. All Questions carry equal Marks.

PART-A
6 × 2 = 12M

1. Define a control Volume.

2. i) For an isolated system, the change in internal energy is ……
ii) The value of Characteristic gas constant (R) for air in SI units is (J/kgK)
A) 0.287 B) 287 C) 28.7 D) 2.87
3. Define coefficient of performance of a refrigerator.
4. Define Latent heat of Sublimation.
5. What is Joule-Thomson coefficient?
6. Define compression ratio.
PART-B
4 × 12 = 48M

1. a) Air is compressed from 1 bar to 5 bar. Initial volume is 0.5 m3. Determine
the work supplied, when the process is
i) Isothermal ii) Adiabatic and
iii) Polytropic with index of compression as 1.25. (6M)
b) Define adiabatic process. Derive an expression for work done when a
system is undergoing reversible adiabatic process. (6M)
2. a) Show that energy is a property of a system. (6M)
b) A stationary mass of gas is compressed without friction from an initial
state of 0.3m3 and 0.105 MPa to a final state of 0.15 m3 and 0.105 MPa,
the pressure remaining constant during the process. There is a transfer of
37.6 kJ of heat from the gas during the process. How much does the
internal energy of the gas change? (6M)
3. a) Write the expressions for non-flow and steady flow availability functions.

b) A system at 500 K receives 7200 kJ/min from a source at 1000K. The
temperature of atmosphere is 300 K. Assuming that the temperatures of
system and source remain constant during heat transfer find out:
i) the entropy produced during heat transfer
ii) the decrease in available energy after heat transfer. (8M)
