RATIONALE:
Social media provide law enforcement agencies with access
to community residents who have concerns and question
about how they and their family members can reduce the
risk of various types of criminal victimization. Websites
and social media pages are important platforms for
posting crime prevention tips, which may be tailored to
crime prevention emphasis in various months of the year .
Social media can be used to monitor criminal activity and
track the behavior of criminals. By following the post
and activities of suspected criminals, law enforcement
agencies can gain valuable insight into their activities,
as well as predict future patterns of criminal behavior.
OBJECTIVES: To analyze the role of social media in crime

Developing a Crime Prevention Blog.A blog that focuses
on crime prevention opens the opportunity for citizens
to respond to and discuss information posted by a
department.
An additional suggestion is the hosting of a crime
prevention web chat by police leaders in which they
interface with residents regarding ways to prevent
various types of crime.
Creating a Crime Prevention Podcast.

enforcement, helping law enforcement agencies detect
plans for crimes before they happen. Twitter has been
especially helpful as a barometer of public interest
and concern, in addition to providing real time
information about an incident as it unfolds.
Platforms like Twitter and Facebook provide a way for
law enforcement to quickly and easily communicate with
the public and provide updates on criminal activities.
Similarly, online tip lines allow citizens to
anonymously provide information to the police, helping
to ensure that criminals are brought to justice.
