Understanding Clause Types

There are two types of clauses: independent clauses and dependent clauses. Independent clauses can stand alone as a complete sentence, as they contain both a subject and a verb and express a complete thought. Dependent clauses cannot stand alone as they rely on independent clauses, and are often introduced by subordinating conjunctions like "because" and "although". Identifying the subject and verb of each clause is important. Clauses can be combined to make more complex sentences, and writers use different clause types to add variety and depth to their writing.
