2. Fill in the blanks:

(a) The value of the variable which makes the equations a true statement is called the solution of
the equation.

(b) Any term of an equation may be taken from one side to the other with a change in its sign. This
is called transposing method.

(c) An equation is a statement of equality which contains one or more unknown variables.

3. Write equation for the following statements.

(a) Three times of a number p, when added to 4, gives 25.

(b) When 2 is subtracted from four times of a number p, it gives 18.

(c) When 2 is added to half of a number p, it gives 8.

Answer: (a) 3p + 4 = 25 (b) 4p − 2 = 18 (c)

4. Write the following equations in statement forms.

𝑥 𝑛
(a) 3x + 5y = 48 (b) = 2𝑥 − 7 (c) +5=8
5 3

Answer:

(a) 3 times a number x added to 5 times a number y gives 48.

(b) A number divided by 5 gives seven less than twice the number.

(c) One third of a number plus 5 is 8.

5. Solve:

a) 3(y – 2) = – 3

Solution:
3(y – 2) = – 3
⇒ 3y – 6 = – 3 (Removing the brackets)
⇒ 3y = 3
⇒y=1

3𝑞
b) −1=5
4

Answer:

3q – 4 = 20

3q = 24

q=8

𝒙+𝟏
c) = −𝟐
𝟑

Answer:
𝑥 + 1 = -6
𝑥 = -7

6. Solve the following.

a) The length of a rectangle is twice its breadth. If its perimeter is 60 cm, find the length and the
breadth of the rectangle.

Solution:
Let the breadth of the rectangle be x cm.
its length = 2x
Perimeter = 2 (length + breadth)
60 = 2(2x + x)
= 2 × 3x
= 6x

6x = 60
⇒ x = 10
Thus the required breadth = 10 cm
and the length = 10 × 2 = 20 cm.
b) Seven times a number is 12 less than thirteen times the same number. Find the number.
Solution:
Let the required number be x.
7x = 13x – 12
⇒ 7x – 13x = -12 (Transposing 13x to LHS)
⇒ -6x = -12
⇒x=2
Thus, the required number is 2.

c) If 3 is subtracted from one-third of a number, the result is 2. Find the number.

Solution:
Let the required number be x
𝑥
−3=2
3
𝑥
=5
3

𝑥 =3×5

𝑥 = 15

d) One-third of a number exceeds one-sixth of a number by 4. Find the number.

Solution:
Let the required number be x
𝑥 𝑥
− =4
3 6
2𝑥 𝑥
− =4
6 6
2𝑥 − 𝑥
=4
6

𝑥 =6×4

𝒙 = 𝟐𝟒

e) Each of the 2 equal sides of an isosceles triangle is twice as large as the third side. If the
perimeter of the triangle is 30 cm, find the length of each side of the triangle.

Solution:
Let the length of the third side be x cm.
Each equal side = 2x cm.
As per the condition of the question, we have
Perimeter = x + 2x + 2x = 30
⇒ 5x = 30
⇒x=6
Thus, the third side of the triangle = 6 cm
and other two equal sides are 2 × 6 = 12 cm each

f) A smaller number is subtracted from a bigger number. The result is 25. If the bigger number is
78, find the smaller number.

Solution:
Let the smaller number be 𝑥
78 – 𝑥 = 25

𝑥 = 78 − 25

𝑥 = 53

Thus, the smaller number is 53.

g) Write an equation and solve: ‘5 added to 9 times a number gives 77’.

.

h) In an isosceles triangle base angles are equal if the vertex angle is 50°. What are base angles?

i) If Manvita’s age is half year less than the thirteen times of her father’s age. Find her age if her
father’s age is 32 years.
