Look at the words below and complete the table.

Work in pairs. Choose a sport and tell your partner. Ask your partner questions. Your partner should
try to recall the answers without looking at the table. Use questions such as:
Where do you play it? What kind of equipment do you need?
3 Sporting verbs
Read the sentences below in pairs. Which sport do you think each spectator is talking about?
1. If you kick the ball into the other team’s net, you score a goal.
2. If you hit the ball into your opponent’s half of the court and he/she is unable to return it, you get
15 points.
3. If you catch the ball before it hits the ground, the player who hit the ball is out.
4. If you punch your opponent and he falls down and can’t get up within 10 seconds, you win by a
knockout.
5. If you tackle the player with the ball before he crosses the line, he doesn’t score a touchdown.
6. If you don’t swing the club hard enough, the ball won’t reach the hole.
7. If you cross the finish line before everybody else, you win the race.
8. This sport suits players who are tall and can jump really high.

Point out that ‘soccer’ (U.S. English) is ‘football’ (U.K. English) and ‘football’ (U.S. English) is known as ‘American
football’ worldwide.)
