HBO Mini Case Study
Read the situation and answer the questions based on the scenario.
Sandra Buckley has worked in your department for several years. Until recently she has been a
“mode” employee. She was always on time, or early, for work, and stayed late whenever necessary to
get her work done. She was upbeat, cheerful and worked very hard. She frequently said that the
company was the best place she had ever worked, and that you were the perfect boss. About six
months ago, however, you began to see changes in Sandra’s behavior. She began to occasionally come
in late and you cannot remember the last time she agreed to work past 5:00 . She also complains a lot.
Other workers have started to avoid her, because she is so negative all the time. You also expect that
she may be looking for a new job. (Adapted from OB: Managing People and Organizations 2010 by
Griffin and Moorhead)
Scenario Questions:
1. Assume that you have done some background work to find out what has happened. Write a brief
case with more information that explains why Sandra’s behavior has changed (ie: your case might
include the fact that you recently promoted someone else when Sandra might have expected to get
the job) Make the case as descriptive as possible. (you are free to express your opinion here. No case
format to be followed)
Sandra Buckley’s behavior change might be because of hiring new employees 6 months ago
and that includes the new employee getting appointed on the position that Sandra really
work hard for. Sandra is a candidate for promotion before the hiring takes place, she didn’t
like the idea that a new employee is being appointed on the that position while she works
hard for years in order to be a candidate for promotion. She was so disappointed and thinks
that all her hard work and efforts for all those years is not being recognized and not enough
to get promoted.
2. Relate elements of your case to the various behavioral concepts discussed in this chapter.
Change of Attitude is the element that can be related to the case. As stated in the case,
Sandra is always on time she stayed up late if it is necessary to get the work done, she is also
a cheerful and upbeat for several year of working in the department and 6 months ago she is
starting to change her attitude towards work. Change of attitude also changes the behavior of
a person.
3. Decide whether or not you might be able to resolve things with Sandra in order to overcome
whatever issues have arisen.
As a manager, one of the tasks of a manger is motivating its employees. I will start by having a
conversation in which he can open up her problems in order for me to help her resolve things
and be that someone she can talk too in which she can share her problems and we can find a
solution or help her to lessen the heaving feeling that she is currently feeling. I can also give
her advice that can motivate her and remind her that all her efforts and hard work are being
recognized and there is something that is bigger that is intended for her efforts for the past
few years. I will assure her that I am someone that she can count on.
