Security Siemens provides products and solutions with industrial security functions that
informa- support the secure operation of plants, systems, machines and networks.
tion In order to protect plants, systems, machines and networks against cyber
threats, it is necessary to implement – and continuously maintain – a holistic,
state-of-the-art industrial security concept. Siemens’ products and solutions only
form one element of such a concept.
Customer is responsible to prevent unauthorized access to its plants, systems,
machines and networks. Systems, machines and components should only be
connected to the enterprise network or the internet if and to the extent necessary
and with appropriate security measures (e.g. use of firewalls and network
segmentation) in place.
Additionally, Siemens’ guidance on appropriate security measures should be
taken into account. For more information about industrial security, please visit
http://www.siemens.com/industrialsecurity.
Siemens’ products and solutions undergo continuous development to make them
more secure. Siemens strongly recommends to apply product updates as soon
as available and to always use the latest product versions. Use of product
versions that are no longer supported, and failure to apply latest updates may
increase customer’s exposure to cyber threats.

1 Question

1 Question

How can I multiply inputs of a fail-safe controller or read in sensors with voltages
other than 24 V DC to a failsafe PLC?

1.1 Answer
The SIRIUS 3SK1 safety relays offer such an option with their basic unit and input
expansion modules. This means you can expand the number or connectable
sensors for each F-input terminal of the fail-safe controller. This FAQ shows the
different options for using the 3SK1 device series as input expansion modules.

2.1 Application examples

There are several application options for preprocessing of sensor signals by the
3SK1. A safe sensor is, for example, read into two independent fail-safe
controllers. The safety relay monitors the sensor (e.g., emergency stop) for this
purpose. The signal is forwarded to the controllers via the enabling circuits. The
3SK1 “Advanced” device series also gives you the option to increase the number of
sensor circuits (e.g., for additional emergency stop command devices or position
switches) by means of input expansion modules.

2 Introduction

Sensors operated with a voltage other than 24 V DC (shown here as emergency

stop) cannot be connected directly to the safe inputs of a fail-safe controller. The
basic unit 3SK1 standard relay is available as wide voltage range version 110-240
V AC/DC or 24 V AC/DC. It can be used to monitor sensor signals in this voltage
range. The safe connection to the 24 V DC level of the SIMATIC fail-safe controller
is implemented by means of relay enabling circuits.

2.2 Introduction to 3SK1 safety relays

The 3SK1 Advanced device series is characterized by the fact that it can be
expanded by modular device connectors. This means it is possible, for example, to
expand a basic unit by up to five input expansion modules with two safe inputs
each. The connected sensors are evaluated by the input expansion module and
forwarded to the basic unit by the device connector. The basic unit combines the
enabling signals of all input expansion modules with its own input signals and
switches off the enabling circuits (relay or electronically) when a sensor is
triggered.

2.3 Sensor parameter assignment on 3SK1

The 3SK1 basic units (except 3SK1111) come equipped with four DIP switches on
the front. The device parameters are set with these switches depending on the
sensor type. The parameters are explained below.

Startup mode (DIP switch 1):

If the DIP switch is set to “Autostart”, acknowledgment via the INS input is not
required. If “Monitored Start” mode is selected, a NO contact must be placed
between the supply (24 V DC) and INS to enable an acknowledgment.

Cross-circuit detection (DIP switch 2):

This function must be enabled for cross-circuit detection between input circuits
when electromechanical sensors are connected. The clocked test signals T1/T2
are used for the sensor supply. Cross-circuit detection is disabled when you use
electronic sensors with inherent testing of cables. The sensor is supplied
externally.

Connection type 1*2-channel or 2*1-channel (DIP switch 3):

This setting enables or disables the testing for simultaneity (discrepancy
 Siemens AG 2018 All rights reserved

evaluation) between the sensor inputs. Depending on the required safety level,
either two separate sensors (2*1-channel) or one redundant sensor (1*2-channel)
can be evaluated.

Start-up testing (DIP switch 4):

If start-up testing is enabled, the sensors must be actuated once after start-up of
the safety relay. A successful (error-free) test is required for the safety relay to
switch on the outputs.

With two-channel connection of the 3SK1, the implemented safety function can
achieve a maximum of SIL 3 according to IEC 62061 or PL e according to ISO

DO, because it is limited to SIL 2/
PL d. The shown parameters apply to the fail-safe input modules of the ET200S
and ET200M.

Two safe inputs in the distributed I/O are required for a two-channel design. The
channel pairs are permanently defined and cannot be changed. For an input
module with 8 fail-safe inputs, for example, one channel pair has the inputs “0” and
“4”.
