Electromagnetic Field Theory Solution BTETC501 - 1

1. The document is an exam for an Electromagnetic Field Theory course, containing 5 questions with multiple parts assessing different levels of understanding. 2. Question 1 has parts assessing vector operations and vector field divergence. Question 2 covers Ampere's law, Maxwell's continuity equation, and Coulomb's law. 3. Question 3 includes parts testing understanding of gradient operations and scalar potentials. Question 4 covers transmission line parameters, propagation constant definitions, and VSWR. 4. Question 5 has parts calculating waveguide properties and energy stored in a capacitor. The exam evaluates concepts across the electromagnetic spectrum from static fields to transmission lines.

C) Define the following terms with reference to EM Wave: Remember
(i) Propagation constant (ii) characteristic impedance and (iii) VSWR
Propagation constant : The propagation constant for any conducting lines
(like copper lines) can be calculated by relating the primary line parameters.

Where,
Z = R + iωL is the series impedance of line per unit length.
Y = G + iωC is the shunt admittance of line per unit length.
Characteristic impedance : The characteristic impedance or surge
impedance (usually written Z0) of a uniform transmission line is the ratio of
the amplitudes of voltage and current of a single wave propagating along the
line; that is, a wave travelling in one direction in the absence of reflections
in the other direction.

VSWR: VSWR (Voltage Standing Wave Ratio) is a measure of how

efficiently radio-frequency power is transmitted from a power source,
through a transmission line, into a load (for example, from a power amplifier
through a transmission line, to an antenna).
