Project 2: Developing an Advocacy and Action Plan for Positive Change
Health and wellness in minorities or lack there of is a problem not just in my community
but in the entire US. Despite significant advances in healthcare, there are still disparities for
many of the minority population in the US. Although there are so many issues in our
communities I chose this particular one because I feel that it is very important to make a change
when it comes to creating equal healthcare and easily accessible medical related resources to
every single person no matter what race or socioeconomic background. Good health and
wellness is a necessity that every person needs and deserves to live their every day life. I think so
many of the minority population live everyday without these basic necessities and I believe we
need to work together to make a change and create equal and good quality healthcare and
provide easy access to resources needed for a good health and wellbeing, like medical care,
nutritious foods and a safe place to sleep every night. I don’t believe it is an easy or an overnight
change, but it is a change that needs to happen.
There are so many factors that contribute to health disparities in the minority population,
specifically socioeconomic factors like income, education, occupation, and housing. Racism and
discrimination contribute to health disparities for minorities. This leads to a bias in healthcare,
which leads to lower quality of care given to minorities, and also a limited access to healthcare
resources for the minority population. There are many ways that we can as a community work
together to make a positive change.
First you would need to assess the needs in the community and identify the specific areas that
need better access to healthcare, healthy food, and other wellness resources. It’s also important to
have open communication with the community, this should help to understand the communities
perspectives on healthcare and identify their needs.
Second, reaching out to local community leaders, healthcare, providers, schools and businesses
to help create and implement more sustainable approach to address health disparities. Work with
these group to figure out a way to provide extra help and resources to those in need like
nutritious food, shelter, medical care, education and job opportunities
Third, creating educational programs for the community that raises awareness about the
importance of a healthy lifestyle like proper nutrition and exercise and preventative healthcare.
Healthcare professionals in the community should address the bias in there facilities and work
harder to create a more welcoming and all inclusive environment for their patients. These facility
should consider providing cultural competency training for these healthcare professionals so that
way they can improve the quality of caregiving for minority patients.
The most effective way to implement this step-by-step plan requires many people from
the community to work together to make sure these steps are taken effectively and efficiently.
It’s important to create a main group of people in charge of overseeing this plan, like community
leaders, healthcare professionals, social workers and local government representatives. Working
with different healthcare providers and healthcare facilities to attain as much medical resources
as possible to provide to those in need, as well as local markets and restaurants to create a large
enough inventory of nutritious foods, fruits, and vegetables can be made available to the minority
population in these communities. Lastly, it is important to provide ongoing education and
training programs for healthcare professionals to maintain and foster an unbiased environment
without any concerns of racism or discrimination for minority patients.
Overall this assignment made me realize how important it is that every single person gets
treated equally and has equal opportunity and access to resources for their health and well-being.
Mostly, I think it’s important that not only do the minority population deserve to have equal
access to healthcare, but it’s also important that they feel safe and comfortable and confident in
the medical professionals and facilities that they go to and not feel misunderstood or
discrimination.
