Prime Factorization

The document discusses prime and composite numbers. A prime number has exactly two factors, 1 and itself, while a composite number has more than two factors. Any composite number can be written as a product of prime numbers using a factor tree. The document provides examples of determining if a number is prime or composite and writing the prime factorization of a number. It also discusses factoring monomials as a product of prime numbers and variables.

Prime Factorization
A prime number is a whole number that has exactly two factors, 1 and itself. A composite number is
a whole number that has more than two factors. Zero and 1 are neither prime nor composite.

Example 1 Determine whether 29 is prime or composite.

Find the factors of 29.
29 ⫽ 1 ⭈ 29
The only factors of 29 are 1 and 29, therefore 29 is a prime number.

Any composite number can be written as a product of prime numbers. A factor tree can be used to find
the prime factorization.

Example 2 Find the prime factorization of 48.

48 48 is the number to be factored.

6 8 Find any pair of whole number factors of 48.

2 32 4 Continue to factor any number that is not prime.

2 32 2 2 The factor tree is complete when there is a row of prime numbers.

The prime factorization of 48 is 2 ⭈ 2 ⭈ 2 ⭈ 2 ⭈ 3 or 24 ⭈ 3.

Lesson 4-3
In algebra, monomials can be factored as a product of prime numbers and variables with no exponent
greater than 1. So, 8x 2 factors as 2 ⭈ 2 ⭈ 2 ⭈ x ⭈ x.

Exercises
Determine whether each number is prime or composite.
