Com Networks Midsem With Answers

The document is an exam for a Communication Networks course containing multiple choice and short answer questions. [1] Some questions calculate efficiency of various communication systems and throughput of TCP flows. [2] Other questions ask about differences between protocols like UDP and TCP, and routing protocols like OSPF. [3]

EED304 : Communication Networks, Monsoon 2022
Exam: Midterm Date: 12th Oct., 2022 Time: 09:30-11:30 PM Max Marks: 34
Instructions: (i) Mobile phones are not allowed. (ii) Read the
questions carefully.
Name: Roll No.:
PART-I
Answer all the questions
I. Host A uses a link to transmit packets to host B via Go-back-N. Let the link speed be 100
Mbps, the
packet size be 1Kb, the ACK size be 50 bits. Find the efficiency of this communication system. [2]
2. Using the formulae given in the class find the efficiency of an Ethernet link used by many users when
the propagation time on the link is 5 msec, the Ethernet link speed is 10Mbps and the Ethernet packet
size is 1Kb.
[2]
3. Host A sends data packets to Host B. Any packet transmitted by A is received by B with an error
probability of 0.1. For each packet of Acorectly received by B, Bsends back an ACK which is
received by A with error probability of 0.05. A will keep sending packets to B till A receives a
correct ACK.

(a) Find mean number of times A transmits to B tillB gets a correct packet. [2]
(b) Findmean number of times Asends packets to Bbefore it gets the correct ACK. [2]
4. Consider the Figure 1.

(a) Consider the link is shared viaTDMA scheme with a frame of size 5 slots. In one frame, Q1
gets 2 slots, Q2 gets 2 slots and Q3 gets 1slot. One slot is 0.2 sec. What is the maximum A such
that Ql does not blow up? [2]
(b) Let one slot be 0.2 sec. Each queue is served in a round robin fashion, one slot at a time. What
is maximum A such that Ql does not blow up? [2]
(c) The link is served as a priority queue. Q2 has highest priority, then Q1, then Q3. Now, what is
the maximum A such that Q1 does not blow up? [2]
(d) Statistical multiplexing: Each queue is served in round robin fashion. But, whenever a queue is
served, it is fully emptied and then the link serves the next queue. Now, what is the maximum
Aso that Q1 does not blow up? [2]

5. Consider a TCP flow where additive increase and multiplicative decrease (AIMD) works as follows:
when there is a packet drop the window size decreases as wk+ = instead of (given in class).
After that the window size increases as wr= W, +2 instead of w + l (given in class). AIlother
things remain same. For this TCPconnection being used by a host A to transmit to a host B with
Wmar = 15KB and buffer size at B to be able to store 5K of TCP packets, and error free transmission.
(a) Draw congestion flow diagram during slow start. [2]
(b) Find the average throughput in congestion avoidance phase. [2)
PART-II
Write short answers for the following with full reasons.
6. For communication over wireless channel which is preferred: error detection and re-transmission
(or)error correction, and why? [2]
For video transmission which is preferred: UDP or TCP and why? (21
8. Why IP uses OSPF for routing within an autonomous region but not across such regions. [2]
9. How does collision detection helps in Ethernet? (2]
10 Why Ethernet switching is better than Ethernet hub? [2]
H. What basic principles were followed in designing the seven layers of OSI. (21
12, For bursty traffic, which is more efficient: TDMA or statistical multiplexing and why? (2)
