lower than gasoline engine.

Be sure to connect the MPROP (rail pressure control valve) connector to the
engine harness before starting the engine. If the engine were started with the
MPROP connector not connected, control of the supply pump by the engine
elec- tronic control unit would not be possible and a fault would ensue.
•The MPROP receives fuel from the feed pump and feeds fuel to- ward the
plungers of the supply pump in such a quantity that the fuel pressure
corresponds to that required by the engine elec- tronic control unit.
•When the MPROP is not operating, i.e., when current is not flow- ing, fuel
flows at its maximum rate. When current flows, the pis- ton in the MPROP is
pressed down such that fuel is not fed toward the plungers.
•The engine electronic control unit controls the ratio of current-off time (duty
ratio).

• The common rail distributes to the injectors high-pressure fuel that has been fed from the supply pump.
Each flow limiter prevents an abnormal outflow of fuel. It does so by blocking the fuel passage in the event of fuel leakage from
the injection pipe or excessive injection of fuel from the injector.
The common rail pressure sensor is used in feedback control. It senses the fuel pressure inside the common rail and feeds a
corresponding signal to the electronic control unit.
If the fuel pressure in the common rail exceeds a certain, set level, the piston in the pressure limiting valve pushes and compresses
the spring such that fuel is able to escape. The pressure limiting valve thus prevents the fuel pressure from becoming higher than
the set pressure.
When the pressure limiting valve is activated, the common rail system is faulty and needs an inspection.

acting on the nozzle needle overcomes the valve piston and
nozzle spring, pushing up the nozzle needle such that injection
starts.

However, turbocharging can increase NOx emissions due to elevated combustion temperatures from the higher air-to-fuel ratio. To mitigate this, turbocharging is often coupled with other technologies such as EGR or intercooling to control emissions while maintaining performance gains .
Reduction of NOx emissions in diesel engines involves several strategies such as delaying the fuel injection timing, optimizing combustion systems, using turbochargers with intercoolers, and employing Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR). Delaying fuel injection reduces the combustion temperature, thereby lowering NOx formation. An optimized combustion system ensures complete burning of fuel reducing NOx and particulate emissions. Turbochargers improve power performance but can raise NOx levels; however, using intercoolers lowers intake air temperature, which helps control NOx emissions. EGR works by recirculating a portion of inert exhaust gas back into the engine's intake air, which reduces the oxygen concentration and combustion temperature, thus reducing NOx emissions .
EGR reduces NOx emissions in diesel engines by recirculating a portion of the exhaust gases back into the engine cylinders. This process decreases the oxygen concentration in the combustion chamber, which in turn lowers the peak combustion temperature. Lower temperatures prevent the formation of NOx, which occurs primarily at higher temperatures. Additionally, the presence of exhaust gases increases the heat capacity of the intake mixture, further reducing peak temperatures and subsequently NOx emissions .
The electronic control unit (ECU) performs critical diagnostics and provides recoverability functions in response to fuel system issues. Flow limiters in the common rail system enhance fuel safety and system reliability by preventing abnormal fuel outflows. During normal operation, the flow limiter piston allows a set quantity of fuel to pass through. However, if excessive fuel flow occurs, the piston's spring mechanism engages, closing the fuel passage to prevent further outflow. This acts as a safeguard against fuel leaks or excessive fuel injection, protecting the injection system components. This mechanism ensures that if a fault occurs, such as excessive pressure or leakage, the system can prevent damage or unsafe operating conditions .
China's exhaust standards for diesel engines have been progressively updated over the years to align more closely with European standards. The first stage (equivalent to Europe I) was introduced in 2001, with subsequent stages following at approximate three-year intervals. For example, the second stage in 2004 matched Europe's 1996 standards, the third stage in 2007 matched the 2000 standards, and the fourth stage in 2010 matched Europe's 2006 standards. The fifth stage in 2012 aligned with the 2009 European standard. Despite these updates, China's implementation dates have traditionally lagged Europe by approximately three to eight years, which is a significant factor contributing to poorer environmental conditions compared to developed countries .
The progression from Stage I to Stage V exhaust standards for diesel engines has significantly reduced both NOx and particulate matter (PM) emissions. From Stage I to Stage II, NOx emissions were reduced by approximately 72%, while PM emissions saw an 86% reduction. By the time Stage V standards were implemented, NOx emissions had been reduced to 2.0 g/KW.h and PM to 0.02 g/KW.h, showcasing stringent reductions from initial levels of 8.0 and 0.36 g/KW.h respectively. Each progressive stage of standards has introduced tighter limits, mandating the use of advanced technologies such as diesel particulate filters, selective catalytic reduction, and more precise fuel injection systems to comply with these stringent requirements .
