General Procedure For Salt Analysis

The document provides a general procedure for analyzing an unknown salt through a series of preliminary tests, group separation tests, and confirmatory tests for acid radicals. The preliminary tests use observations of color, solubility, and reactions with acids or bases to infer which metal ions or anions may be present. Group separation tests then group the possible cations and anions through precipitation reactions. Finally, confirmatory tests definitively identify the anions through characteristic reactions like the formation of gases or precipitates. The systematic testing procedure allows for the step-by-step identification of all components in an unknown salt sample.
