In this experiment, we will examine the air pressure across the column as a function of air
flow rate for different water flow rates down the column. Based on the objective stated, we
will examine the air pressure across the column as a function of air flow rate for different
water flow rates down the column by using a packed column. The method used in this
experiment is by flooding the packed column with water and adjusting the flow rate of water
to examine the air pressure across the column. From the experiment, the results show that the
graph of log total pressure differential versus log air flow rate has a loading and flooding
point in the graph. However, in the graph there are also some error as there are no loading
and flooding in some section in the graph. This error may arise due to the long time of usage
of the packed column that cause the liquid in the packed column to evaporate.
INTRODUCTION:
Packed column is a hollow tube, pipe, or other vessel that is filled with a packing material
that used in chemical and industrial processing. The packing can be randomly filled with
small objects like Raschig rings or saddles and materials are usually of plastic and ceramics.
The purpose of packed column is typically to improve contact between two phases in
chemical or similar process. Packed column can be used in a chemical reactor, a distillation
process, or a scrubber, but packed column has also been used to store heat in chemical plants.
In industry, a packed column is used to perform separation processes, such as absorption,
stripping, and distillation. A packed column is a pressure vessel that has a packed section.
In this experiment, we will use packed column to examine the air pressure across the column
as a function of air flow rate for different water flow rates down the column. The column can
be filled with random dumped packing or with structured packing sections, which are
arranged or stacked. In the column, liquids tend to wet the surface of the packing and the
vapor pass across this wetted surface, where mass transfer takes place. Packing material can
be used ed instead of trays to improve separation in distillation columns. Packing offers the
advantage of a lower pressure drop across the column, which is beneficial while operating
under vacuum. Differently shaped packing materials have different surface areas and void
space between the packing. Both these factors affect packing performance. The Ergun
equation can be used to predict the pressure drop along the length of a packed column given
the fluid velocity, the packing size, and the viscosity and density of the fluid. The wet column
used in this experiment because of the relationship shown by the water flow rate and air
pressure in wet column.
CONCLUSION:
In conclusion, the air pressure across the column increases as the water flow rate down the
column increases. The graph of the log total pressure differential versus air flow rate show
that it contain the loading and the flooding point.
