LED Aviation Obstruction Light (AOL) Beacons
(Covered under Patent)
BINAY Medium Intensity Type A flashing white LED (Light Emitting Diode) Aviation Obstruction Light Beacons
are maintenance-free units which provide a “fit-and-forget” advantage and conform to ICAO norms for intensity
in candela. As the mandatory ICAO/DGCA requirement for Type A lights requires fewer levels of installation,
they can be used as a more convenient alternative to Medium Intensity Type B and Type C aviation lights
Medium Intensity Aviation Obstruction Light Beacons are required to be installed on structures having heights ranging
from 45 meters and above, as per the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) Manual, Appendix 14, Chapter 6.
BINAY LED-based Medium Intensity Aviation Obstruction Lights use special long-lasting, ultra-high intensity InP Technol-
ogy LEDs. These LED lights are characterised by an extremely long life (100,000 hours), and low power consumption.
The solid-state LED construction utilises an omnidirectional matrix of extremely

high brightness LEDs housed in a unique reflector design, which provides MEDIUM INTENSITY TYPE A
light intensities comparable to the existing aviation lights. These LED units are LED AVIATION OBSTRUCTION LIGHT
maintenance-free, and are a “fit-and-forget” solution since they never require
replacement (under standard operating conditions). While the initial capital cost
of these LED Aviation Lights is lower than that of conventional xenon tube type
medium intensity lights (which conform to ICAO requirements), their payback
period is also extremely short.
The latest InP technology LEDs are used in the construction of these lights.
InP technology LEDs are specified the world over for outdoor applications as
they have a greater ability to withstand high temperature and high humidity
conditions. The circuit design – coupled with the choice of the LEDs used –
provides high reliability. Furthermore, the LEDs in the unit can be configured in
multiple series-parallel circuits, and as such one can consider that each unit is
backed up by several standby units. Thus, fail-safe redundancy is inbuilt; even
if one circuit fails, the other circuits will still provide a visible indication
NOTE:
One of the most important issues when using aviation lights is that such products are used at great heights, where any kind of mainte-
nance is extremely difficult. Given the same, it is essential that reliability should be inherently designed into the product. This
can be done by ensuring that the components used in the light itself are limited as far as possible to only those which have a high
reliability, and any active electronics (which is the most likely section liable to cause any problems) should be located at an easily
accessible location at the ground level.

Lighting Up The Future
In an LED Aviation Obstruction Light, the most reliable component having the longest life is the LED itself. Passive components such
as resistors and diodes can also be considered reliable if over-rated suitably. The most critical and unreliable components are electro-
lytic capacitors and active components such as transistors and similar semiconductors (both of which are prone to surges, heat, and
other abnormal environmental conditions). It is essential to ensure that such components and associated circuits are eliminated from
being located inside any product being used at a critical and non-accessible location. They should be located remotely, at an easily
accessible location.
As such, all BINAY LED Aviation Obstruction Lights are specially characterized by the following specific advantages:
• No external power supplies are required (hence do not need to be installed at heights/elevated levels).
• Non-switching passive solid-state internal circuitry (NO SMPS units used inside the aviation light unit): The
circuitry incorporated inside the BINAY LED Aviation Obstruction Lights is of a passive electronic (solid-state) nature,
and does not use internal SMPS driver switching units to control the light unit. Internal LED current control is by non-
switching electronic means only, without any use of SMPS or other switching methods of control.
• NO electrolytic capacitors are used inside the BINAY LED Aviation Obstruction Light unit.
• All control systems are at ground level only: In some competitive systems, special cables, electronic slave circuits at
different height levels (and separate connections between such circuits), and junction boxes – all are compulsorily re-
quired for synchronization between different lights. In the BINAY system, there is NO such requirement, since all
synchronization is done at the ground level, where all electronic circuits can be easily accessed.
• The LEDs used in our aviation lights have leads of non-ferrous material to avoid damage due to rusting and corrosion
over time in an outdoor environment.
• Our LED Aviation Obstruction Lights benefit from BINAY’s experience of over 20 years in the continuous develop-
ment and manufacture of this product (after careful scrutiny of the regulatory aviation requirements).
The above is necessary to ensure reliability of the LED Aviation Obstruction Light. This system design effectively eliminates
any active components and circuits inside the aviation light itself, and enhances the solid-state passive reliability of the
LEDs (mounted in relatively inaccessible locations at the height of tall structures). This drastically reduces the possibility of
component failure - and hence possibility of any maintenance requirement – in the LED Aviation Obstruction Lights them-
selves (which are mounted at extreme heights in the system).
Our over-riding philosophy with our design of LED Aviation Obstruction Lights is primarily that – access to any object at
heights should be limited as far as possible. This has been used by us over the last 20+ years (since our invention of the
LED Aviation Obstruction Light) in more than 5000 projects all over India and globally to great success.
