30yrs, early menarche, late menopause, stress and
larger breast definitely increase the likelihood of developing this disease.
Early detection and treatment of breast cancer can improve the survival rate up to 98%.
Risk of breast cancer can be prevented by performing monthly Breast Self Examination,
regular clinical breast examinations and Mammography.
NEED OF THE STUDY
The need of the study opens the door to evaluate the knowledge of breast cancer, risk
factors, symptoms and methads of screening among female young adults and their
perception towards the disease treatment outcomes.
The study is conducted :-
+ to assess the level of knowledge among female young adults on the risk factors
associated with breast cancer and early signs of presentation.
+ to identify their awareness of the use of BSE as a means of screening for breast
masses.
OBJECTIVES
1, To assess the pretest knowledge scores regarding breast cancer among female
young adults in selected colleges at Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh,
2. To assess the post-test knowledge scores regarding breast cancer among female
young adults in selected colleges at Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh.
3. To compare the pretest and post-test knowledge scores regarding breast cancer
among female young adults in selected colleges at Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh,
4. To find out the association between post-test knowledge score regarding breast
cancer with selected socio demographic variable.
REVIEW OF LITERATURE
1. Swetha (2012) Conducted a Quasi Experimental study to determine the
effectiveness of structured teaching programme on breast self examination for
early detection of breast cancer for the age group of 20-60year women’s, the
study was conducted at Adhiprasakthi rural centre, Poraiyur, Tamil Nadu,
convenient sampling technique was used to select the samples,60 samples are
selected, data collection tools consist of structured interview schedule and check
list to assess the knowledge, attitude,& practice. First pretest of knowledge,
attitude,& practice was assessed, after the Pretest the STP was given to the
same group, then post test was assessed, data collection were analyzed by usingdescriptive and inferential statistics. Women showed a statistically significant
increases in knowledge regarding breast self examination.
. Kesiya (2012) Conducted a study to assess the knowledge and effect of planned
teaching programme regarding breast cancer and breast self examination among
60 working women’s in the secondary and higher secondary education
department in Pune city. Descriptive and inferential statistics were used to
analyze the data. A structured questionnaire was used to collect data .The study
showed that the mean knowledge score about breast cancer & BSE obtained
from working women’s in pretest was 7.5 & that of post test was 13.4, this
difference was statistically highly significant.
. A cohort study was carried out by Sara |jaz Gilani & et al. in the year 2015 to
assess knowledge and attitude of breast cancer among Pakistani females. The
sample consisted of 1000 randomly selected adultfemales. Pre-tested structured
questionnaire was used to gather data. Results revealed that majority (82.9%)
had heard of breast cancer. More than 50% participants were aware of cancer“s
relationship with increasing age, painless lump, lack of breast feeding, obesity
and smoking. Except for breast lump, over 50% participants had knowledge
about breast cancer symptoms. More 50% subjects had knowledge about
diagnostic modalities and treatment. Majority (90%) had positive attitude but had
poor (28.3 %) regarding breast self examination.
Pakseresht, S., Ingle, G.K., Garg, S., and Sarafraz, N.( 2016) conducted cross -
sectional study regarding Stage at Diagnosis and Delay in Seeking Medical Care
among 172 Women with Breast Cancer, Delhi, India.Result revealed that
awareness of breast cancer was higher (80%) among literate women than
illiterate ones (65.4%). One of the reasons for increased cancer mortality in
developing countries is delay in seeking medical advice. Delay in early detection
could be due to differences in sociodemographic and cultural factors, a strong
belief in traditional medicine, negative perception of disease, poverty and poor
education and coupled with fear and denial.
. Study shows increased in awareness in post test results after providing
awareness talk to participants. Research conducted in India by Madhukumar et al,
2017 focusing 1030 science students age ranged between 18 and 23 years,
showed good awareness of breast cancer. However, the knowledge regarding
sign and symptoms and BSE was poor. A power point presentation regarding
information on breast cancer was provided to the students after pre-test. In the
pre-test the participants thought the older age women are affected by breast
cancer and breast cancer are caused by trauma, whereas after the awareness
session, post test results showed participants were aware that cancer can affect
any age group. The risk factor knowledge also improved considerably. Only 18%knew about BSE but were not performing regularly. The reason for not
performing were lack of privacy, embarrassing, some thought it was not
important and many did not know how to perform it. Post-test showed that
majority were aware of BSE. 90% students said they would perform BSE regularly.
Others were still embarrassed to perform it. 90% women said they will pass the
knowledge to their family members and friends.
