2. The mass of an object is the amount or quantity of matter contained in the object. The SI unit of mass
is ……………………..
3. The mass of an object is ………… wherever it is measured. It is different from ………….. which is
affected by the …………. of gravity.
5. Objects having greater mass will have ………………… inertia. This means that the greater the mass
of a body, the more …………………….. it is to start it moving or to stop it.
6. When the bus stops suddenly our feet are brought to rest
but due to inertia, our body tends to continue its
(forward/backward) motion. This causes our body to
jerk forward/thrown forward.
7. When the bus moves suddenly from rest our feet are
carried (forward/backward) but due to inertia our body tends
to keep us (at rest/moving).This causes our body to fall
blackwards.
8. Explain why
(a) drops of water on the surface of an (b) apples from a tree fall down when
umbrella are removed when the the tree branches are shaken?
umbrella is rotated?
9. Two large tins are suspended from the ceiling by long strings.
One of the tins is filled with sand while the other is empty.
(a) When both tins are given a short sharp push, which one can
be moved more easily?
(b) While the tins are still moving, try and stop them. Which
one can be stopped more easily?
(c) Explain your answers to (a) and (b).
13. In a trick, a magician pulls a piece of soft cloth quickly from the
surface of a table. Explain why the plates and glass that were
originally placed on the cloth do not move even though the cloth was
removed.
14. Two bags A and B are hung from the ceiling of a lorry. When the lorry suddenly stops, bag B moves
forward more than bag A. Compare the masses of the two bags. Explain your answer.
15. A student pulls the thread under the load as shown in the diagram.
(a) If he jerks thread B immediately with full force, which part of the
thread will break? Explain your answer.
(b) If he increases the pulling force gradually, which part of the thread
will break? Explain your answer.
(c) Explain why some of the leaves may get detached from a tree if we vigorously shake its branch.

Some leaves of a tree get detached when we shake its branches vigorously. This is because when the branches of
a tree are shaken, it moves to and fro, but its leaves tend to remain at rest. This is because the inertia of the
leaves tend to resist the to and fro motion. Due to this reason, the leaves fall down from the tree when shaken
vigorously.

Question 4 Q. Why do you fall in the forward direction when a moving bus brakes to a stop and fall backwards
when it accelerates from rest? Answer: Due to the inertia of the passenger. Everybody tries to maintain its state of
motion or state of rest. If a body is at rest, then it tries to remain at rest. If a body is moving, then it tries to
remain in motion. In a moving bus, a passenger moves with the bus. As the driver applies brakes, the bus comes
to rest. But, the passenger tries to maintain his state of motion. As a result, a forward force is exerted on him.
Similarly, the passenger tends to fall back words when the bus accelerates from rest. This is because when the
bus accelerates, the inertia of the passenger tends to fall back wards when the bus accelerates forward.
[8] The diagram below shows a man pushing an empty trolley and a trolley loaded with a heavy box.
(a) Why is it easier to start and stop the empty trolley compared to the one loaded with heavy
box?
(b) Explain why, when the trolley loaded with the heavy box is stopped suddenly, the box moves
forwards and drops out of the trolley.
