➢ HISTORY OF THE MINE
Churi colliery is a nationalized underground coal mine in the North Karnpura area of
central coalfields limited(CCL) property of Churi colliery lie in between Saphi and
Damodar rivers having 2 seam named as Upper Bachra seam and lower Bachra seam
churi mine was open in the year 1942 through incline no.1 developed in Lower Bachra
seam then incline no.2&3 where opened on the south side of the property in the year
1948 these incline where developed in Lower Bachra seam under an area of about
07.68sq. km. these working where also approached by number 4&5 incline. During
the depillaring of this mine fire was occurred in goaf area no 11-09-1956. Due to
spontaneous heating the fire area is sealed by erecting for rows of fire stopings to
project the rest working of the seam and the intervening galleries where packed with
sand and soil, as the mining condition was not conducive for working the entrance of
the mine was completely sealed off in the year 1965.
On the other part of the property towards north 1. Incline was developed into fault F-1
and afterwards the same incline was sealed off due to DGMS violation as the entry of
the mine was lying on the nalla bed which directly connected with the saphi rivers.
In the year 1958 1A and 3A incline were opened and developed initially in upper bachra
seam up to fault F-11 and beyond the fault in lower bachra seam in the same sequence
as the seam comes in just a position due to up throw fault having 10 m in the year 1967.
➢ ACCESSIBILITY :
The colliery is well connected to Ranchi by road and Khalari railway station is 2.5 km
from churi colliery. Road passes along the western boundary of the area.
➢ CLIMATE :
The climate of the place is “typical monsoon” type. The lowest temperature is in
december and highest in June. The maximum precipitation is during the month of july
and august.
GEOLOGY OF MINE
There are two seams existing in churi lease hold area named as Upper bachra and Lower
bachra seam. Upper bachra seam is available in almost half of the property vanishing
in the west of the property whereas lower bachra seam is available in whole part of the
property. Thickness of lower bachra increase in the west and decrease trend of the east
of the property there is one major fault and three minor fault are encountered within
the lease hold area full dip of the seam is 1 in 7.75 in the direction N40*11*W but
average gradient of the seam is 1 in 20. Thickness of upper bachra seam 1 varies from
0.13m to 4.42m and lower bachra seam varies from 1.95m to 9.75m parting between
the two seam varies from 0.9 to 12.25m.
In benti block there is no existing to upper bachra seam whereas lower bachra seam is
existing but splitted into two part such splitted seam are named as upper top lower
bachra, lower top lower bachra and bottom lower bachra thickness of upper top lower
bachra is workable varies from 2m to 3.5m but interior in the grade whereas thickness
is lower top lower bachra is not workable varies from 1.2m to 2m bottom lower bachra
is existing in good condition where is thickness varies from 3m to 4m. Grade of the
seam is ‘b’ long flame.

GEOLOGICAL DISTURBANCES
A fault is a planar fracture or discontinuity in a volume of rock across which there has
been significant displacement as a result of rock-mass movement.
In CHURI BLOCK, the area presently under consideration in Churi Block lies
between faults F17 & F10. Fault F17 exists in the north-eastern part of the block where
as fault F10 exists in the southern and south-western part of the block. The throw of
fault F17 is about 50m towards north-west in the northern part which gradually
decreases to around 5m near borehole No. CHPR-57 located on the left bank of
saphiriver. The throw of fault F10 varies from 15-25m and the throw is towards north-
east. The area between these two faults is characterized by simple geological structure.
There are three more faults (F11A, F12 and F13) in addition to above two faults which
trend almost NW-SE with north-easterly throw of 5 to 13m. There are four minor slips
also F11B, F11, F15 and F18) whose throw varies from 2 to 5m of the above faults,
F11, F11A, F11B, F12 and F15 have been encountered in the mine workings while F18
was responsible for omission of Upper Bachra Seam in NNKC-24. Fault F15
encountered in the mine workings was also responsible for omission of Upper Bachra
seam in NNKC-19.
The strike within the block is roughly NE-SW in the major part of the area which
gradually swings to almost north-south in the eastern part. The strike between fault F13
and F17 in the north-eastern part has further taken swing to almost NNW-SSE.

METHOD OF WORKING
In Churi mines, Bord and Pillar method is adopted for the extraction of coal. In this
method there are two steps for the extraction of coal i.e. Development,Re-Development
and Depillaring. Narrow roadways are driven in series which are parallel to each other
and right angle where they connect, this is known as Development and narrow roads
are separated by coal blocks. And these roadways are supported by coal pillars and then
after these pillars extracted which is known as Depillaring.
➢ Status/Result of RE-evelopment
▪ Dimension of Pillar - 19m X 19m(Section)
▪ Width of gallery - 6m
▪ Height of gallery – 4.6m

▪ Present working seam thickness – Lower Bachra (2m to 5m)
▪ Degree of gassiness – Degree1
▪ Height of seam - 5m
▪ Nature of the roof – soft rock & coal
▪ Method of working – Bord and pillar method
▪ Presently doing method – Depillaring –Re-Deveplopment

SUPPORT SYSTEM
A man-made structure erected in mines to prevent caveins and heaving of the
surrounding rock, to preserve the required dimensions of the mine cross section and to
absorb and control the rock pressure. Mine support must provide mine safety and be
economical, portable, and simple to maintain, neither interfering with nor complicating
the conduct of production processes.
Mine support for main and developmental workings is classified according to the
support material, according to the nature of the structure (rigid, yielding, articulated, or
mixed support), according to service life (permanent or temporary support), according
to the type of mine cross section (trapeziform, arched [open or closed], annular,
elliptical, or polygonal), and according to the type of working (flat, inclined, or vertical
faces).
Roof support is essential to the safety of every underground mine. It has three primary
functions:
• To prevent major collapse of the mine roof.
• To protect the miners from small rock falls that can occur from the immediate
roof skin.
• To control deformation so that mine openings remain serviceable for both access
and escape, as well as for ventilation of the mine workings.
➢ Types of support system used in mines o ROOF BOLT o WOODEN PROP o
