CHAPTER 1

ABSTRACT

Senior High School students are naturally secreting so much vitality and energy. It is an

advantage for them to explore the world they are in. Experiencing new insights, gain

wisdom, and acquire knowledge that they needed to face the next chapter of their life. JD

Salinger’s protagonist Holden Caulfield, had experienced this kind of ordeal as he

explores the complex world through his teenage eyes.

Salinger’s The Catcher in the Rye revolves mostly through encounter with people with

people belonging to different backgrounds, professions, age, gender, and character.

Holden does this analyzing them whenever people come across him. With this he

understands and notices that there’s a general psychological characteristics, feelings and

behavioral traits in human nature that a child minds couldn’t understand. He categorized

the people into two categories, the ‘phonies,” and the authentic. He classified the phonies

as someone who’s superficial, hypocrite, fake and someone who has a manifestation of

conformity. It is important for Holden to know the age, gender, occupation of people he’s

interacting with for him to alter and modifies his own identity. Basically, his way of

communicating depends on what kind of people he’s having an exchange.

The purpose of this research is to explore and unravel the human nature and the way of

the world through the perspective of a Senior High School students of Abe International

Business College. Through their thoughts and general opinion about what do they think

about the people they interact as they observed them

INTRODUCTION

In the vast tapestry of human existence, understanding the intricacies of human

nature and comprehending the complexities of the world we inhabit have been perennial

quests. From philosophers to scientists, scholars to artists, individuals have sought to

unravel the mysteries that surround us. However, in this pursuit, a unique perspective

often overlooked is that of a senior high school student. This essay aims to shed light on

how the eyes of a senior high school student can offer valuable insights into unraveling

the mysteries of human nature and understanding the way of the world.

Adolescence is a transformative phase of life, marked by rapid physical, emotional, and

intellectual changes. It is during this time that students begin to develop their own unique

perspectives, shaped by personal experiences, education, and exposure to the world

around them. This transitional period provides an ideal vantage point for observing and

questioning the norms, values, and behaviors of society.

One aspect that becomes apparent to senior high school students is the diversity of human

nature. As they navigate the hallways filled with individuals from various backgrounds,

cultures, and belief systems, they witness the rich tapestry of human diversity. This

exposure fosters an appreciation for different perspectives and allows them to gain a

deeper understanding of the inherent complexities of human nature. By engaging in

conversations, forming friendships, and challenging their own biases, high school

students can begin to unravel the intricate layers that shape our individual identities.

3
ABE International Business College

Furthermore, the way of the world, as observed by senior high school students, is often

filtered through a lens of curiosity and idealism. As they venture into the world of

academia, social activism, and extracurricular pursuits, students become acutely aware of

the challenges and injustices present in society. They question the status quo, challenge

societal norms, and engage in discussions that seek to address pertinent issues such as

climate change, inequality, and social justice.

Through their unique lens, senior high school students are unencumbered by the

limitations of established knowledge. They possess a fresh perspective that is free from

preconceived notions and biases, allowing them to think critically and question the world

around them. This ability to question the established order fosters innovation, creativity,

and the exploration of new ideas, ultimately leading to a deeper understanding of human

nature and the world.

The perspective of a senior high school student is a valuable tool in unraveling the

mysteries of human nature and understanding the way of the world. Through their

experiences, interactions, and unfiltered lens, they offer fresh insights, challenge existing

paradigms, and contribute to the collective quest for knowledge. By valuing and

encouraging their unique perspectives, we can foster a generation of thinkers who will

continue to unravel the complexities of human nature and shape a more inclusive and

compassionate world.

HISTORICAL BACKGROUND

“The Catcher in the Rye” is a seminal novel written by J.D. Salinger and published in

1951. It is renowned for its exploration of themes related to coming of age and the

challenges associated with adulting. To understand the historical background of the

novel, it is important to consider the cultural and social context in which it was written.

Post-World War II America:

“The Catcher in the Rye” emerged during a period of significant social and cultural

change in the United States. The aftermath of World War II saw a shift in societal values

and a transition from the idealized innocence of the pre-war era to a more complex and

uncertain world. The novel captures the disillusionment and existential angst prevalent

among young people during this time.

The Beat Generation:

5
ABE International Business College

Salinger’s novel reflects the emerging Beat Generation, a countercultural movement

that rejected mainstream societal norms and embraced individualism, nonconformity,

and a search for authentic experiences. The protagonist, Holden Caulfield, embodies the

disillusionment and rebellion against the materialistic and conformist society of the

time, echoing the sentiments of many young people in the post-war era.

The Transition to Adulthood:

Holden Caulfield’s journey in “The Catcher in the Rye” revolves around his struggle with

the transition from adolescence to adulthood. This theme resonated with readers in the

1950s, as the baby boomer generation began to enter adulthood and grappled with the

challenges and expectations associated with growing up. The novel explores the

pressures to conform to societal norms, the loss of innocence, and the search for

personal identity.

The Education System:

Another significant aspect of the historical background in the novel is the portrayal of

the education system. Holden’s experiences at various schools reflect a critique of the

rigid and impersonal nature of formal education. Salinger’s portrayal of the education

system resonated with readers who questioned the effectiveness of traditional

educational institutions in preparing young people for adulthood.

The Cultural Impact:

6
ABE International Business College

“The Catcher in the Rye” became a cultural phenomenon and a touchstone for

generations of readers. It sparked discussions about adolescence, identity, and the

challenges of entering adulthood. Its frank and authentic depiction of teenage angst and

the protagonist’s search for meaning and connection resonated with many individuals

navigating the complexities of growing up.

Review of related literature

The Catcher In The Rye: A synopsis

“The Catcher in the Rye” is a novel written by J.D. Salinger and published in 1951. It is

a coming-of-age story that follows the protagonist, Holden Caulfield, over a few days in

December.

Holden Caulfield is a sixteen-year-old teenager who has been expelled from his

preparatory school, Pencey Prep, due to failing grades. He leaves the school early and

travels to New York City, where he plans to spend a few days before returning home to

face his parents.

Throughout the novel, Holden shares his thoughts, experiences, and encounters with

various people he meets in the city. He is disillusioned with the adult world, finding it

phony and superficial, and struggles to fit into society’s expectations.

Holden is a troubled and complex character, grappling with feelings of loneliness,

alienation, and confusion. He often wears a metaphorical “mask” to hide his true self, as

13
ABE International Business College

he feels disconnected from those around him. The novel delves into his inner thoughts,

struggles, and his desire to preserve innocence and protect children from the harsh

realities of adulthood.

Holden’s encounters in New York City include interactions with his old friends, a

prostitute, a cab driver, and his younger sister, Phoebe. Throughout these encounters, he

grapples with themes of identity, growing up, loss, and the concept of authenticity.

“The Catcher in the Rye” is known for its distinct narrative voice, as Holden narrates the

story in a colloquial and introspective manner. The novel explores themes of adolescent

angst, rebellion against societal norms, and the desire for a genuine connection in a world

that often feels artificial.

In the contrary the book is a timeless classic that continues to resonate with readers,

capturing the universal struggles of adolescence and the quest for personal authenticity.

called THE CATCHER IN THE RYE: A CRITIQUE OF HUMAN NATURE THROUGH THE

EYES OF A TEENAGER. Senior high school students are at a stage in their lives where

14
ABE International Business College

they are developing their personal beliefs and worldview. They are often exposed to a

variety of influences, including education, social interactions, media, and personal

experiences, which shape their understanding of human nature and the world around

them.

Human Nature:

Realism and Skepticism: Some students may have a more skeptical perspective,

acknowledging that human nature encompasses both positive and negative aspects. They

may recognize the existence of self-interest, conflicts, and the potential for unethical

behavior.

Pessimism and Cynicism: A portion of high school students may hold a more pessimistic

or cynical view of human nature, perceiving people as primarily driven by self-interest,

greed, and power. They may emphasize the negative aspects of human behavior and

highlight systemic issues.

The Way of the World:

Social Justice and Equality: Many high school students are passionate about social justice

issues and equality. They may advocate for fairness, inclusivity, and the dismantling of

social, economic, and racial disparities. Their worldview may be shaped by a desire for a

more just and equitable world.

15
ABE International Business College

Environmental Consciousness: Increasingly, high school students are concerned about

environmental issues and sustainability. They may prioritize efforts to combat climate

change, promote renewable energy, and protect natural resources. Their worldview may

reflect a deep appreciation for the interconnectedness of humans and the planet.

Global Perspective: With access to information and technology, high school students are

often aware of global challenges and events. They may be interested in international

relations, global cooperation, and cultural diversity. Their worldview may be influenced

by a sense of global citizenship and a desire for peaceful coexistence.

It's Important to remember that these views can evolve and change as students gain more

knowledge and life experiences. Additionally, cultural and individual differences can

significantly impact the perspectives held by high school students. For a comprehensive

review of related research on this specific topic, it would be best to consult academic

databases, scholarly journals, or conduct surveys or interviews with senior high school

students.

Methodology

Research Design

The following research has been done by using the method of qualitative analysis. With

the help of textual analysis, this

Paper brings to surface one of the lesser discussed approaches made towards the novel.

The type of textual analysis used here is

Content analysis as the research has been done by analyzing and studying existing

information available in essays, books, articles

study of the novel, this project sheds light

On one of the major but neglected themes of the novel, that is, a teenager’s examination

of human nature.

In the methodology, I used surveys among grade 12 students of Abe International

Business College to know deeply of how a senior high school student take on how they

unravel the mystery of the human and the way of the world. It’s a combined analysis of

book secretes knowledge and an actual opinion of respondents regarding this

undertaking. Unfortunately, due to my nature of executing this undertaking, I used

Google form for them to answer the survey without actual facing the interviewer.

Participants of the study

The set of questions made by the researcher will be the followed format by the

participants in answering the questions to gather relevant information that corresponds to

the aim of this study. The researcher looked for approximate 15 senior high students of

Abe International Business College under Stem strand to answer the survey form via

Google form. The following questions are asked:

are going through life and experience a post-adulthood experience thus

relationship could also be considered as the growing needs of having a company

throughout this age is highly dependable on the validation of the opposite

gender.

Stated by female

Says the male are dealing way comfortable in life than they are having

menstruation and the expectations of dealing a good life because that’s what a

woman should do is indeed depressing for them. The amount a “should not do”

screams every time they reintegrate to society. The things they want to explore

has limitations for their safety.

RELIGIOUS PEOPLE

On this modern day senior high school students ten to be more not so caring

towards the people of religion. Many claims being agnostic and some says

clearly not believing yet not hating since a lot things going on right now. Says

they are awake enough on things that a religion could not be part of it. Some

senior high school still look at people who’s religious as not so very good people.

Says that these people tend to be way more judging than what a normal people

in society is.

OPINION WITH INTELLECTUAL FOLKS

The amazement toward these types of people is clearly the most senior high

students react. They are amaze about what is going inside these peoples head

and badly wanted to know what these people think. They are also stated that

most of these people are hard to deal with, says that every time you encounter

them either they are in need of arguments, they are usually correcting the wrong

doing of a typical senior high students.

PARENTS

They said as for dealing with double life the hard time with dealing with parents

is that the hardness of making compose even though they really something they

parents never really know. Senior high school tend to keep everything for

themselves and never really having an exchange of conversation with parents,

either they afraid of being confronted, they are afraid that once their parents

know what they do outside the house, they cannot no longer do that.

CHILDREN

Categorized into two, those who love kids and those who not. But mostly they

hate kids because they are annoying, loud, and out of control. With the opposite

statement of those who likes kid, the children who does wrongs and cries makes

them remember the life they used to have.

CHAPTER 5

Summary of the study

This paper shows that the life we used to go passed through cannot no longer be

back, we only can look back to old days and appreciate that it happened, hence

46

the amount of people who wanted to go back for being a kid cannot be

countable. Depressing life is the way of the world for people to understand the

real life. The human nature tend to adopt the things base on the life he currently

living on in society. Dealing with lot of struggle of being part of the world is

indeed way more depressing than what we have on when we are young.

Senior high school students stated that adulting could not so very joyful than the

phase of life reaching adolescence where the post-adulthood is just an opening

eye to the real life. With lots of going and a hard to deal. Therefore we really

should fight to keep ourselves alive. Jobs, relationship, and thinking of what

would be our future could be considered. You cannot no longer be as careless

with your decision because that would make you suffer in your immediate

future.

Conclusions

The life is short, that’s why we are really need to keep on. JD Salinger is indeed a

genius author as he is one of those writer who often opens the mind of young

one’s to what a coming age is. An opening eye to the real world that most of

senior high students would probably going to face any time soon. Reaching the

life they are excited and afraid which they cannot stop.

These ideas they are currently having could be the key for them to have a guide

for not being capricious in things once life is now dealing with the things that

may or may not be change. The catcher in the rye is just another novel that makes

the life nostalgic for individual.

We are going to be someone’s father, we are going to be someone’s employees,

we are going to be someone’s customer. Our life has story to write on, that

similar to the life of Holden Caulfield, our story starts every time we come to life.

The moment we enter on this world and how would it be to the end.

RECOMMENDATIONS

To the future researchers, the researcher of this undertaking suggest elaborating

more of the central questions in asking the respondents for the interview to get

wider knowledge about this topic. Getting more view point towards the idea of

mysteries of the human nature and way of the world is highly recommended for

it will help to solve the puzzle in mind.
