Startup Procedure
The following procedure illustrates the functional steps required to prepare the aircraft for
flight - many of the tests and checks required in the real-world procedures have been

This procedure is based on the aircraft being in the default “Cold and Dark” state.

Pre-Flight

Controller Configuration (ESC)


● Make sure you have the correct controller profiles selected for the aircraft.

Overhead (CTRL+7)

ELECTRICAL section (first column, middle)


● BATTERY to ON
● FWD EXT PWR L & R to ON (if available)
● AFT EXT PWR to ON (if available)

IRS section (first column, top)


● LEFT to ON
● RIGHT to ON

ELECTRICAL section (first column, middle)


● APU to START (falls back to ON automatically)

EMER LIGHTS section (second column, second row)


● EMER LIGHTS to ARMED and GUARDED

Flight Management Computer / FMC (CTRL+3)


● Press POS INIT soft-key
● Set REF AIRPORT (icao code)
● Press ROUTE soft-key
● Set ORIGIN (icao code)
● Set DEST (icao code)
● Set RUNWAY (departure runway)
● Set FLT NO (flight number)
● Press ACTIVATE soft-key
● Press EXEC soft-key
● Press NEXT PAGE to set route (if using airways)
● Press PERF INIT soft-key
● Set CRZ ALT (cruise altitude) - e.g. 360 = 36,000ft
● Set COST INDEX - e.g. 100
● Press ZFW soft-key twice (it auto-calculates)
● Set RESERVES - e.g. 1
● Press THRUST LIM soft-key
● Press TAKEOFF soft-key
● Set FLAPS as appropriate (typically 5 degrees for normal length runways)
● Press CG soft-key twice (it auto-calculates)
● Press V1 soft-key (to populate)
● Press VR soft-key (to populate)
● Press V2 soft-key (to populate)
● You should see green message “FMC Preflight Complete”
● Press DEP ARR soft-key and configure departure and arrival choices
● Press LEGS soft key and clear up and discontinuities, etc.

Overhead (CTRL+7)

FD DOOR POWER section (second column, top)


● FD DOOR POWER to ON

WINDOW HEAT section (second column, third row)


● PRIMARY L & R SIDE & FWD to ON

PASS SIGNS section (second column, bottom)


● SEAT BELTS to AUTO

ANTI-ICE section (third column, bottom)


● WING, L ENGINE & R ENGINE to AUTO

EXTERNAL LIGHTS section (third column, bottom)


● NAV to ON

AIR CONDITIONING section (fourth column, middle)


● L PACK and R PACK to AUTO
● RECIRC UPPER to ON

Master Control Panel / MCP (CTRL+2)


● FLIGHT DIRECTORS to ON
● Preselect HEADING, ALTITUDE, IAS etc
● Preselect LNAV, VNAV as appropriate
● Calibrate Altimeter(s)
● A/T ARM (Auto Throttle) to ON/ARM

Instrument Panel (CTRL+ 2)

AUTOBRAKE section (middle, low)


● AUTOBRAKE to RTO

ECT SCREEN (middle)


● Set STAB config to green box

Overhead (CTRL+7)
HYDRAULIC section (second column, middle)
● C1 and C2 to AUTO
● L ELEC and R ELEC to AUTO

FUEL section (third column, middle)


● PUMPS to ON (for tanks with fuel)
○ Generally L FWD & AFT, R FWD & AFT, CENTER L & R

EXTERNAL LIGHTS section (third column, bottom)


● BEACON to ON

Center Pedestal (CTRL+5)

TRANSPONDER section (center, top)


● TRANSPONDER MODE to XPDR

Monitor N2 >= 20%

● Rotate
● GEAR to UP
● FLAPS to UP as appropriate
● AUTOPILOT to ON

Final Notes
● Landing lights on below 10,000ft
● IAS <= 250 knots below 10,000ft
● Calibrate altitude to STD above transition level
