Mounting the MCP

The LWM 2.0 MCP with all options weighs approximately 165 lbs (75 kg). A rack should be
selected to accommodate this load. Lufkin Automation recommends that the rack be constructed
with a non-corrosive steel/metal material with coating appropriate for the environment.

The LWM 2.0 MCP has four rack-mount eyelets that should be used with four half-inch bolts, nuts,
and washers (not provided).

Mount the MCP so the bottom of the enclosure is at least 1.5 feet (0.5 meters) from the ground and
above any anticipated water, snow, or sand build-up. The top of the enclosure should be placed 5
to 6.5 feet (1.5 to 2 meters) above the working surface to allow easy access to the controls.

Conduit sizes of 3/4-inch for the five auxiliary openings, and 1 inch to 2.5 inches for the main
electrical input and outputs are required. Make sure to provide enough space to route these
conduits.

Note: For wire lengths longer than 100 feet (30 meters),
increase wire sizes by one gauge size.

Note: Wire sizes are based on individual conductors (single

core wires). If multi-conductor cable is used, the wire size will
need to be increased.

Primary Input Power

The LWM 2.0 MCP requires three-phase voltage of 480VAC, 50/60 Hz. Use the following
guidelines for wiring the input power connections:
• Refer to the table on page 10 for recommended power wire sizes.
• Wires from the power company interface (meter or service disconnect) should be run in rigid
metal conduit buried at suitable depth according to local codes. The conduit should be run up
into the bottom of the MCP enclosure.
• Dress the three power wires up the side of the enclosure and connect at the bottom of the
circuit breaker as shown in Figure 5.

To Motor To Supply

Figure 5. LWM 2.0 MCP Power Wiring

• Pull a ground wire along with the three power wires. Attach the ground wire to the ground bus
in the lower right corner of the enclosure and terminate it in one of the ground lugs provided.
Avoid making sharp bends in the ground lead.

Document # 2000301976, Rev. B 11

Lufkin Well Manager 2.0 Motor Control Panel User Manual

Power Leads from MCP to Motor

There are three motor power leads that must be connected from the motor overload relay to the
motor junction box. Use the following guidelines for connecting these leads:
• Refer to the table on page 10 for recommended power wire sizes.
• The motor power leads should be run in a combination of rigid and flexible conduit, or an
armored flexible cable can be used. These leads must be run in separate conduit from primary
power source leads and any signal cable leads
• Pull a ground lead to ground the motor chassis in the conduit with the power leads.

System Grounding

WARNING: The MCP grounding procedure must be performed

by a qualified electrical technician. Improper grounding can
result in severe injury or death.

Warning: Turn off power at the main power source and follow
proper lockout/tagout procedures before opening the MCP
enclosure. Failure to heed this warning can result in severe
injury or death.

Proper earth grounding of the LWM 2.0 MCP is critical to minimize transient voltages that can
damage the control system electronics and to prevent high frequency noise from interfering with
the signal inputs. Use an adequate grounding system to satisfy NEC and local regulations for the
full-load current rating of the MCP.

Use the following guidelines for system grounding:

• Refer to the table on page 10 for recommended ground wire sizes.
• Avoid any sharp bends in a ground lead.
• The primary power source service ground should be terminated on the MCP ground bus bar
using one of the ground lugs provided.
• Lufkin Automation recommends using the wellhead as the system ground electrode. The
ground bus bar in the LWM 2.0 MCP should be connected to the wellhead with an
uninterrupted length of stranded green ground. All other parts of the system should in turn be
connected to the MCP ground bus.
• Terminate the ground wire at the MCP ground bus bar with one of the lugs provided and to the
wellhead with an approved pipe ground clamp rated for the wire size used. The connection
spot at the wellhead must be cleaned down to bare metal before installing the clamp, and it
must be sufficiently coated afterward to prevent corrosion.

12 September 2020
Wiring the Motor Control Panel

• Make sure all installed ground connections meet the requirements according to the local
standards and/or practices. The typical practice is to confirm low resistance between the MCP
ground bus bar, the local ground point (such as the well head), and the motor.

The system is now grounded.

Fault Sensor Wiring

The LWM 2.0 MCP includes three fault sensors that must be connected to the fault relay terminal
in the bottom left of the MCP enclosure. Use the following guidelines:
• Connect the overpressure sensor to position 1 and 2.
• Connect the over-temp sensor to position 3 and 4.
• Connect the vibration sensor to position 5 and 6.
These position locations are shown in Figure 6 below.

Figure 6. MCP Fault Wiring Terminal

Note: Remove the jumper wires before making these

connections.

Note: The MCP requires normally closed sensors, and when

in fault must break a 120VAC current at 100mA.

This fault relay terminal is connected to Digital Input 7 in the LWM 2.0 controller. Refer to “Fault
Relay Configuration” on page 18 for instructions on configuring Digital Input 7.

Document # 2000301976, Rev. B 13

Lufkin Well Manager 2.0 Motor Control Panel User Manual

Adjusting the Circuit Breaker

The LWM 2.0 MCP has a magnetic circuit breaker with a range of 1,000-2,000 amps. This breaker
should be adjusted to trip condition (at the well site) at a current that exceeds the instantaneous
starting current (also known as the locked rotor current) of the motor.

Adjusting Start Delay Time

Use the start delay timer to delay starting a pumping unit when power is cycled. The time delay is
adjustable within the range of 0.05 seconds to 100 hours. Figure 7 shows the start delay timer.

Figure 7. Start Delay Timer

The green U LED flashes during the start delay period. At the end of the start delay period, this
LED turns solid and the red/amber R LED turns on.

The start delay feature is implemented for two reasons:

• It allows power to be restored for a defined period before the pumping unit is allowed to start.
This ensures that operator handling, system faults, or POC start/stop commands will not result
in very fast start/stop cycles that could cause motor damage.
• It allows the installed Sonalert to sound an audible warning before the pumping unit is started.

Note: A voltage overload fault will require the MCP to be

manually reset by the operator before the unit will start the
motor. In this situation, press the Reset button on the front of
the MCP enclosure.

14 September 2020
Adjusting Start Delay Time

Some applications require an immediate response on the motor without waiting for a start delay.
Examples of such applications are:
• Stopping the pumping unit at a specific location for end device calibration
• Beam pump application troubleshooting
In consideration of such common field application practices, the MCP is factory-wired to use start
delay only after the occurrence of one of the following:
• general power failure
• fault condition
To adjust the start delay, select the Range value using the top dial and the Fine value using the
bottom Time dial. (See Figure 7 on page 14.) Each dial mark on the Time dial corresponds to 10%
of the selected Range value.

For example:
• If the Time dial is set at 1, the Fine value is equal to 10%.
• If the Time dial is set at 10, the Fine value is equal to 100%.
The procedure for adjusting the start delay time is as follows:

1. Determine the target start delay. This procedure uses an example of 30 seconds.

Caution: The start delay time should be long enough to

ensure that the fault condition is not still present. Some fault
conditions (such as an over-temp or high pressure fault) may
require an extended period of time to be resolved before the
system can be safely restarted. Set the start delay time long
enough to allow for these conditions. Failure to do so can
result in equipment damage.

2. Based on the target start delay, select the next higher value on the Range dial. For a 30
second target start delay, the next higher value on the Range dial is 100 seconds.
3. Select the corresponding Fine value using the Time dial. The 30 second target Start Delay is
30% of the selected 100 second Range, so the Time dial should be set at 3.

Below are three other examples.

• To set a start delay time of one minute, set the Range to 10m and Time to 1.
• To set a start delay time of 10 minutes, set the Range to 10m and Time to 10.

Document # 2000301976, Rev. B 15

Lufkin Well Manager 2.0 Motor Control Panel User Manual

• To set a start delay time of 30 minutes, set the Range to 100m and Time to 3.

Note: For instantaneous violation detection during startup,

adjust startup violation delays to prevent premature shutdown.
(The most common Start Delay setting is in a range between
10 and 30 seconds.)
Refer to the Lufkin Well Manager 2.0 Rod Pump Controller
User Manual (Document # 2000300330) for more information.

Adjusting Timer On/Off

The timer adjusts the pumping unit on/off time when TIMER mode is selected. The Timer On and
Off values are adjustable within the range of 0.05 seconds to 100 hours.

There are two sets of Range and Time dials on the pulse timer. (See Figure 8 below.) The upper
set (T1) controls the Time On setting while lower set (T2) is for the Time Off setting. For details on
the Range and Time dial adjustment procedure, see “Adjusting Start Delay Time” on page 14.

The procedure to set the Timer On/Off function is similar to the Start Delay Time adjustment
procedure on page 14.

Note: This Timer On/Off cycle functionality is only available in

TIMER mode. If the MCP is in set to POC and AUTO mode,
the POC (LWM 2.0) is in full control of the pump cycle.

The start delay feature on the LWM 2.0 enhances safety by preventing fast start/stop cycles that could damage the motor, especially during power cycling. It allows operators to restore power for a set period before the unit starts, providing time for audible warnings to be issued through the Sonalert system. This reduces the risk of sudden restarts in case of faults or manual interruptions .

The fault sensors in the LWM 2.0 MCP are wired to a fault relay terminal within the enclosure, specifically connected to Digital Input 7. Each sensor (overpressure, over-temp, and vibration) is connected to designated terminal positions. They serve to detect faults and interrupt the circuit by breaking a 120VAC current, helping to protect the system from damage by triggering alerts for corrective action .

Configuring the HOA switch involves accessing the Main Menu to reach the RPC Miscellaneous I/O screen. Through this, the switch is set to 'Enabled' and saved. Physically, the switch is turned between HAND, OFF, and AUTO positions, impacting the system by reflecting operational states such as 'HOA in Hand State', marking manual operation, or 'Downtime Operator Stop' when set to AUTO, impacting remote control capabilities .

Adjusting the circuit breaker on the LWM 2.0 MCP involves setting the magnetic circuit breaker range, which spans 1,000-2,000 amps. This adjustment is critical to ensure the breaker trips at a current that exceeds the motor's instantaneous starting current, preventing potential damage from overcurrent during startup. Adjustments should be made based on site-specific locked rotor current values .

The LWM 2.0 facilitates language selection through a specific interface allowing the display in three languages: English, Chinese, and Spanish. To change the language on the interface, users should use the arrow keys to navigate left or right, selecting the desired language, and then press the <ENTER> button to confirm the selection .

Precautions for wiring power leads include using rigid metal conduit, adhering to recommended wiring sizes for 480VAC inputs, and grounding properly to avoid transient voltage and system damage. Failure to follow these guidelines risks severe injury or equipment failure due to improper power distribution or inadequate grounding, and must be carried out by qualified technicians .

Mounting the LWM 2.0 MCP requires ensuring it is positioned at a proper height to avoid environmental challenges, utilizing a non-corrosive, sturdy rack to support its weight, and ensuring that it's outside hazardous zones due to its non-hazardous rating. Conduit routing must accommodate sufficient space for electrical inputs and outputs, ensuring compliance with local codes for safety and functionality .

Grounding the LWM 2.0 MCP is crucial to minimize transient voltages and prevent high-frequency noise interference. The grounding process involves connecting the MCP ground bus bar to the wellhead using uninterrupted stranded green ground wire, and ensuring low resistance between the MCP ground bus, local ground point, and motor, adhering to NEC and local codes. Proper grounding must be performed by a qualified technician to avoid risks of injury .

The alternate keypad characters on the LWM 2.0 enhance user interaction by enabling the use of alphabets for parameter input, which can be critical for naming or specific settings input. This feature is activated by pressing the ALT button once, displaying "ALT" in the status bar, and deactivating it by pressing the button again .

The operational status icons on the Lufkin Well Manager 2.0 display convey the pumping unit's operational state: a green icon signifies normal pumping operation, an amber icon indicates a downtime well state, and a red icon signals a system malfunction .
