Babylonian mathematics originated around 1800 BCE and used a sexagesimal (base-60) numeric system with only two symbols written in cuneiform on clay tablets. They could perform fraction, algebraic, and quadratic calculations. Egyptian mathematics from the same period was more applied, using hieroglyphic numerals to perform arithmetic like addition, subtraction, multiplication and division on papyrus. Both systems were decimal and could count to large numbers.
