Six Beliefs​: “Believe in Allah, and His angels, and His books, and His messengers, and in the Last Day
and in the decree of Allah” (Hadith)

The five roots of ‘Usul ad-Din:


- Tawhid ​- “He is God the One, God the eternal (Surah 112)
- Nubuwwah ​- “We sent messengers to every community” (Surah 16:36)
- Adalat ​- “God commands justice” (Quran 16:90)
- Imamah ​- Obey God and the Messenger, and those in authority among you” (Surah 4:59)
- Mi’ad ​- “His is the Judgement; and to Him you shall be returned” (Surah 28:70)

Nature of Allah:​
- Immanence ​- “We are closer to him than his jugular vein” (Surah 50:16)
- Omnipotence ​- “He has power over all things” (Surah 2:109)

Living the Muslim Life

The Five Pillars of Islam


- Salah​: “Keep up regular prayer” (Surah 4:103)
- Sawm​: “Fasting is prescribed for you” (Surah 2:183)
- Hajj​: “Pilgrimage to the House is a duty owed by God” (Surah 3:97)
- Zakah​: “Alms are meant only for the poor” (Surah 9:60)
- Shahadar:​ “Whoever obeys God and the Messenger will be among those He has blessed”
(Surah 4:69)

Jihad​: “You who believe, be mindful of God” (Surah 5:35)


“Strive for His cause so that you may prosper” (Surah 5:35)
→ This means that approaching various struggles in life and making wise choices are a significant
aspect of a Muslim’s life.

Laylat-al-qadr​: “The Night of Glory is better than a thousand months” (Surah 97:3-4)
→ This means that no one can measure the extent of its greatness and rewards
Lesser jihad​: “Fight them until there is no more persecution” (Surah 190-194)
→ This means that fighting in self defense can become necessary but they must keep within the limits
set by Allah

Id-ul-Ghadeer​: “Ali will be the leader” (Hadith)


→ This is when Shias commemorate the time when Prophet Muhammad declared to all Muslims that Ali
was to be the leader after him.

Peace and Conflict

Greeting​: “Al-salamu ‘alaykum” which translates to “peace be upon you”


Kindness​: “Do not turn your nose up at people” (Surah 31:18-19)
Peace​: “God invites [everyone] to the home of peace” (Surah 10:25)
→ Peace lies at the heart of Islam and it is important in the everyday life of a Muslim
Reconciliation​: “If two group of believers fight, you [believers] should try to reconcile them” (Surah 49:9)
→ Teaches that - disagreements are sometimes inevitable, efforts should be made to forgive others and
God will bless those who make such efforts and bring about the desired reconciliation
Teachings​: “God commands justice, doing good and generosity” (Surah 16:90)
Fighting​: “Fight in God’s cause against those who fight against you, but do not overstep the limits”
(Surah 2:190-194)
Killing​: “Anyone who kills a person [...] it is as if he kills all mankind” (Surah 5:32)
Holy war​: "Fight them until there is no more persecution, and worship is devoted to God." (Surah 2)
