2 star 2% Wow! This is a dense tome of brilliant ideas, exercises, and theory. Not for the faint of heart. If you're
more like me and have an analytical approach towards jazz, this book will give you enough material to
1 star 3% chew on for a lifetime. I'm planning on skimming through it the first time to absorb it, then slowly
bring in all the exercises and work through them in all 12 keys, which is a gargantuan undertaking.
How customer reviews and ratings work
Some of chapters on pentatonics and melodic minor are really eye opening and filled missing pieces of
the puzzle in my jazz theory understanding. If the other 2/3rds of the book are just as good as this first

I'm just an average guy that really loves jazz improvisation, BUT I could not figure it out. I could hear
the music I wanted to play in my head but I could not produce it on my instruments. Then I bought this
book and connecting the chords (both by Bert Ligon) By the way I own all of his books. Anyway after
getting the comp tech book things started to change for me for the better. 1. I can now read music 2.
My solo's speak to the audience 3. I have composed several nice pieces of my own. Just to name a few.
If you are a person like me hate school love to learn these are the books for you. You will learn to
improvise and when your neighbor hear you play instead of saying "you learning to play an instrument"
they will ask "are you a professional musician?" These books are worth every dollar. I have other
publication that I paid a great deal for and got very little in return. Even if you cannot read music I say
buy these books, practice the written exercises and you will learn; soon you will be reading from the
charts. These books contain many hidden gems buy them and discover for yourself. One more thing
record yourself a before and after type thing you will be surprised. And once you hear your sound go
with it, using these books you WON'T be just another copycat player.

I have the theory book that these exercises accompany in a loose way, so I trust Ligon to give the
simplest explanation possible for complex theory questions. Many pattern books don't explain the
source of the pattern, or name it without much explanation. With this book, you always know what the
exercise is for, how it connects to jazz theory. You can focus on the simple or the complex. I really got
inspired by some of the triadic exercises, and also by the patterns using Lydian dominant scale. Ligon's
intent is that you learn enough through his examples to create your own patterns and lines. There are
many, many exercises to choose from, in treble and bass clef (transposition is left to you) and I know I
will continue to return to it as long as I play. I wouldn't recommend it to beginners, but intermediate,
advanced, and professional level musicians should have this book.

Berklee with more questions than answers regarding jazz improv, this book will build your musical
chops and educate you in the finer points of jazz improv. This is NOT a beginners book; to get the most
out of it, you'll need to have a year or two of music theory under your belt. For those of you looking to
further your improv chops, check out Ed Byrne's jazz method Linear Jazz Improvisation Book 1 It will
complement your studies with this book. Between the 4 books by Bert Ligon and Ed Byrne's jazz
methods, you may not need to look any further for quality jazz studies.

routine (tips are including in the book) otherwise it can be overwhelming and frustrating.

The only thing I misses was rhythm exercises, but you can find them in the theory book

I've bought this book because it was referred to by Bert Ligon himself in his Theory Resources vol 2. As
that book is one of the most excellent jazz theory books I've ever read I thought the Comprehensive
Technique could be equally good.

The great thing about this book is that the exercises are both "generic" and incorporating the jazz
idiom. The author doesn't expect you to take an exercise for granted, he clearly describes from which
original jazz context it was generated and in which situations it can be applied.
Therefore the exercises don't feel like a technical "drill" (like Hanon), but more like expanding your
vocabularly and developing your ears, systematically and not random. The book contains material for

years of study.

Though my instruments are piano and guitar, I also use the exercises away from my instruments
(singing), which can even be more challenging.
Also the exercises are a good inspiration to generate your own exercises.
