Before I am going to start our lesson let me show some

These musical instruments are used in different types of


Mindanao music.

D. Lesson Proper

Today I am going to discuss with you the vocal and


instrumental music of Mindanao.

Who among you can derscribe the music of mindanao


The music of Mndanao is very unique
and can be used for different types of
important events, like ceremonial.

Correct it can be used in different ceremonial events, As


we all all know vocal music of mindanao is being
categorized and classified according to thier content and
function. It could be categorize as follows:
We have life cycle, spiritual/religious, and narrative epic
Let’s talk about life cycle. Life cycle is a song about
life, death, work and etc. In life cycle we have lullaby,
love and courtship. Entertainment, children song, death,
work, and war.
Who can give me an example of vocal music under life
cycle? Sir, batabata
What is batbata all about?
It’s is a lullaby song, Sir.
Yes, lalluby is a song sung to send a child to sleep, so
from the word bata-bata, it is vocal sleeping
music. Okay?

Again class what are the under of life cycle? In life cycle we have lullaby, love and
courtship. Entertainment, children song,
death, work, and wa, Sir.

Are there any question?

If none, let’s move on to the next category which is the


Spiritual or religious. When we say spiritual or religious
this are song for cremony, prayer and worship.

Under that we have salathul juma(islam Friday prayer),


tarawe(prayer during ramadan), derik (maranao) or
dikil(maguindanao) a dirge song after vigil.

17 cycles and a total of 72,000 lines, the
Darangen celebrates episodes from Maranao history and
the tribulations of mythical heroes.
,raja indapatra of maguindanao. Raja Indarapatra is the
mythological hero of Magindana, gabatutu of Subanon,
and tuwaang of Manobo.

We are done with the vocal music of Mindanao.


Now let’s proceed to the intrumental music of
Mindanao. The instrument in mindanao will categorize
in four 4 classifications

What are these classification class?


Chordophones,Aerophones, Idiophones
Chordophones,Aerophones, Idiophones and and Membranophones, Sir.
Membranophones, Sir.

Yes, those are four classifications.

Let’s talk about first about chordophones. When we say


chordophones these are instruments that produce sounds
from vibrating strings.

So the instruments under chordophones are;


Kudyapi it is a two-string guitar. It is made out of wood
about 1 ½ m long

Next is Kudlong, it is a two-stringed lute made of wood.


One string for the melody, one for drone.

Next we have what we called Saluroy a polychordal


bamboo tube zither of Bagobo

And last under Chordophones we have Aduwag-ay – a


one-stringed fiddle of the B’laans

Did you get it, class? Yes, Sir!


So what are the instruments under Chordophones? Kudyapi, kulong, saluroy, and aduwag,
Sir!

Okay, you got it. Are there any question? None, Sir.

If none, let’s go on to the next classification, which is


the aerophones. These are instruments that produce
sound, primarily by causing air to freely vibrate. So the
instruments under Aerophones are:

SAHUNAY - a bamboo tube with six finger holes; bell


made of leaf(probably bamboo) and blue plastic ribbon

PALANDAG - it is a bamboo with a two-by-two


fingerholes and a protruding mouthpiece with a hole.

Next classification Idiophones,


Sir, its an instruments that create sound
Anyone who has the Idea about Idiophones? through vibrating themselves.

Yes, these are the musical instruments that creates sound


primarily by way of the instrument’s vibrating through
shaking or tapping. The instruments under idiophones
are;

KULINTANG- set of eight gongs


Made of bronze on a wooden stand and functions as a
lead/central melodic instrument

Next is, Gabbang it is bamboo xylophones with 17 keys


sperated by metal nails.

Next is Agung is a set of two wide-rimmed, vertically


suspended gongs used by the Maguindanao, Maranao,
Sama-Bajau and Tausug people of the Philippines as a
supportive instrument in kulintang ensembles
Next is Babendil is a narrow-rimmed gong that is
primarily used in the Maguindanao kulintang ensemble
as a timekeeper.

Next is Kulintang a tiniok- is a type of Philippine


metallophone with eight tuned knobbed metal plates
strung together via string a top a wooden antangan
(rack).

For the last instrument we have Kubing is a type of


Philippine jaw harp from bamboo found among the
Maguindanaon and other Muslim and non-Muslim tribes
in the Philippines

Membranophone, any of a class of musical


instruments in which a stretched membrane,
Sir.

For the last classification, we have membranophones.


What is the membranophone class, anyone?

Yes, verygood those are the instruments produce sounds


primarily by way of vibrating stretched membrane. So,
under membranophones we have;

Dabakan a goblet-shaped drum, is a single headed drum


covered with goat, lizard or snakeskin. It is played by
strucking with two thin bamboo sticks.

Second is Gaddang Double-headed barrel drum. It is


played on its side with the drumming tapping one head
with his hands.
