1. Explain the reasons why some young people may find it difficult
to move to independence (AC 1.1)

For Assessor

Discovery Home my work place where we offer residential placements for

children with various form of disabilities. Our aim is to teach them skills
which will enable them to be independent in future. And want all our children
to be independent. There are children who have developed some accelerant
Independent living skills and they are using it on their day to day life. But we
have limitations too. Children must leave us when they become 18. For
some children this transition period becomes so difficult and they don’t want
to leave us. There are many reasons behind this, such as;

 Children are scared of their new life

 Fear of losing their peer group
 Getting too used to with the current setting
 Not confident to meet new people
 Losing their comfort zone
 Fear of missing all the activities they are doing now
 They are not confident enough to face the challenges

The most common reason we face with our children is they have a fear of
losing their friends, they often says they will miss them. And they are not
confident enough to make new friends. All our key worker helps our children
towards their transition to adulthood by giving them confidence and boosting
their moral by reassurance of a better service.

2. Explain the concept that independence is relative to each

individual young person’s stage of development and level of
understanding and ability (AC1.2)

For Assessor

If it helps, get to know what independence is about and then use your
knowledge of child development to look at the role that independence plays
in each ..

Normally Independence mean free from outside control or not subject to

another’s authority. Children and young people also have all the right s to be
independent. They should enjoy freedom of movement in all stage of their
life. We as a project worker should help them to be independent and enjoy
the full form of life. I work with children with special needs where one of our
key duties is to promote independence. We help children and young people
to become independent by training them with independent living skills. But
all the children’s are not same towards their development and might take
long time to be independent. Independence have a great impact on each
development stage of a children and young person

physical

Physical development greatly interlinked with independence. There are

many sources which contribute towards the physical development such as;
mobility, puberty, body changes, voice, growth and change ofbody shapes.
A children or young person’s physical development will be positive if he/she
is been given enough and relevant independence.

communication

Children and young person’s communication is greatly influenced by

independence. A person who is independent will be more confident than an
isolated person and will communicate more effectively. Their body language
and skill of communication will be more positive than the person who is not
independent
.
intellectual / cognitive

3. Explain the reasons why independence is not always permanent

and that some young people may go through transitions and
move between dependence and independence at various times
(AC.1.3)

For Assessor

Sometimes Independence is not permanent and as some of our children and

young people goes through transitions and move between dependence and
independence at various times .we as a project worker face it many times
while working with children and young people. It takes years for us to make
our children independent. But all our children must go through a transition
period while they become 18 years. And the children move to the adult
services. Most of the time between transitions fazes our children and young
people lose their confidence and become dependent on adults. Many
children refuse to leave the service as they are not confident enough to
move to new service. Some children are scared to lose their friends from
the current service. Some are so used to with the present service as they
are using the service for very long time and they know all routine and the
staff and their peer groups. It is never easy to help a child on transition. It’s a
very emotional period for the children same as for us. Many of our children
remain independent after transition. Some they lose their confidence and
permanently become dependent on adults. There are some children who
stay in the circle of coming in and out of the independence. We as a project
worker should help our children to remain independent while they move to
the new life. We should always encourage them and boost their confidence.
And also as their key workers we should also help them to find out the right
support system for them.

4. Explain why practical support and advice for independence is a

long term project (AC.2.5)

For Assessor

Children with learning needs always required a support system behind them
to become independent. It is not an easy process. It takes both time and
planning to help children towards their independence. Children with special
needs don’t have the same level of understanding as the normal children.
They needs long term planning and appropriate services designed for
them .With children with special needs we often require alternative plans and
plan for long term. Some children take years to learn few basic skills some
manage to learn in few months. We always recommend long term plans for
the children and services which are more appropriate to their age group. We
should never lose hope and always seek practical specialist advice and
always expect long term projects and plans for children and young people.
Because of their complex needs all the advice and the services should be for
long term and should sustain. And we as a project worker should help them
to get the right kind of support.

5. Explain how to support young people who may feel worried and
ambivalent about becoming independent (AC.3.3)

For Assessor

Children who we work with will someday become independent that is our
goal is. And most of our children face hard time while their transition period
arises. So as a project worker it is our duty to guide and help them towards
their new life.

As a key worker for the children my first job will be to describe the scenario
to the children. I have to explain in a calm and professional way. I must have
to confirm their moral and confidence is high. I have to explain the positive
sides of being independent. I also have to tell them the negative. I must
reassure them I am here for them. Anything happens to them I am always
happy to help them. I also have to tell them about their new life. I must help
them with the way to make new friends. In a reassuring way I have to tell
them about the new people they are going to meet, the new activities which
will be available for them, the new food they are going to experience almost
every possible thing I have to explain them what they should expect. My
main duty will be preparing them for their independency by boosting their
confidence by talking in a positive manner.

6. Explain the importance of having somewhere that is ‘home’

(AC.3.5)

For Assessor

Children and young people are always vulnerable towards abuse and
neglect. And their vulnerability increases when they have disability. Many of
the children are subject to domestic violence and neglect. Some of the
children have troubled family background. For those children importance of
home is great. As because many of them are missing the comfort of their
home. They are living in different arrangements because of their complex
situation. Many children are living with foster parents, some are living in
care, and some are using respite care. As they don’t have a meaningful
home to go these places replaces their need of a home. Some of our
children are living better and meaningful life with the foster carer. So as a
respite care setting it is our duty to provide them with the homely feeling. In
Our setting we call it home away from home. Where we put our best effort to
give them the best homely feeling. We do everything for them which their
parents supposed to do for them. All our children have separate rooms
which some of them don’t have when they are in their own home. We allow
them to watch TV, play in the computer, and participate in arts and craft. We
cook food for them. We always reassure them by telling them everything is
for them. We believe At least we are giving a hope to the children by
providing them the homely feeling. It is very important for the confidence and
security of our children and young people.
