SESSION 3 Ethics
SESSION 3 Ethics
SESSION 3
OUR SOURCE OF ETHICAL STANDARDS: THE BIBLE
I. OBJECTIVES
Knowledge: By the end of this session, students will be able to:
1. Understand how the whole Bible must be applied to all of life.
2. Know the Four Characteristics of the Bible.
II. INTRODUCTION
• The ultimate basis for morality, behavior and ethical standards is God himself.
• The only satisfactory ultimate basis for ethical standards is the eternal, unchanging
moral character of God. Before anything else existed, God existed. He is. And one
aspect of his eternal existence is his eternal moral character.
• And any actions, attitudes, and personal characteristics that receive God’s approval
are ones that are morally right, and they ought to be approved by us. Those actions,
attitudes, and personal characteristics that receive God’s disapproval are ones that
are morally wrong, and they ought not to be approved.
• But how can we find out what God considers to be right and wrong? We can learn
that from the Bible.
• One of the purposes of the Bible is to enable us to know which actions, attitudes,
and personal character traits receive God’s approval, and which ones do not. In other
words, one of the reasons God gave us the Bible was to teach us about his views of
moral right and wrong—to teach us ethics!
• And no matter what, Christian and Non – Christians should adhere to the moral
teaching and Ethical standards of the Word of God.

• But for the believers, God purposed us to live a life pattern to the Word of God and
shine our light for the Non – Christians for them to believe also and glorify God in
their lives.
• “16 All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and
training in righteousness, 17 so that the servant of God[a] may be thoroughly
equipped for every good work.” 2 Timothy 3: 16 – 17
• The Bible as the Ethical Standard for Christian living
1. It provides guidance and direction. (Psalm 1: 1 -2; Psalm 119: 105; Job 23: 12;
Matthew 4:4; Luke 11: 28)
2. God’s Word is eternal truth. (Psalm 119: 160; Isaiah 40:8; Matthew 24: 35)
3. God’s Word enables us to fight against sins. (Psalm 119:11; 2 Timothy 3:16;
Hebrews 4:12; Ephesians 6: 17; James 1: 21 – 22)
1. Authority: The Bible Alone, and the Entire Bible, Is the Word of God Written.
o With respect to ethics, the authority of Scripture is important because it tells
us that the Bible is our only absolute authority for defining moral right and
wrong.
3. Necessity: The Bible Is Necessary for Knowing God’s Declarations of Right and
Wrong.
o With regard to Christian ethics, the necessity of Scripture is important
because it tells us that we need the Bible in order to have any certain
knowledge of God’s will with respect to moral right and wrong.
