Topic Outline

This study aims to design, fabricate, and evaluate the performance of three different blade designs for a compressed air-driven impulse turbine: bucket-shaped blades, air-foil shaped blades, and blades with leading-edge fillets. The blades will be 3D printed and tested under conditions to measure the turbine's efficiency and power output in order to determine the most efficient blade design. Specifically, the objectives are to: 1) Design the three blade types, 2) Fabricate the blades using 3D printing, and 3) Evaluate the turbine performance by computing efficiency and power output.

Design, Fabrication, and Performance Evaluation of Blade Designs for a Compressed Air-

Driven Impulse Turbine

Statement of the Problem:

The use of compressed air as a source of energy has been gaining popularity in recent
years due to its low cost and environmental friendliness. One of the applications of compressed
air is in the design of turbines that can be used for power generation or other mechanical
applications. The design of the turbine blades is a critical factor that affects the performance of
the turbine. The aim of this thesis is to design, fabricate, and evaluate the performance of blade
designs for a compressed air-driven turbine.
This study will design a specific blade design which are blade designs that will be evaluated and
will be limited to bucket-shaped blades, air-foil shape blades, and leading-edge fillet edges. the
blade will be fabricated in a 3D printer using the proper filament to ensure its durability.
Moreover, the researchers want to know what blade design is the most efficient among the three
designs that will be evaluated.

Objectives of the Study:

Generally, this project study aims to design, fabricate, and evaluate the performance of a
compressed air-driven turbine by using different blade designs.
Specifically, it aims to
1. Design three types of turbine blades which are bucket-shaped blades, air-foil-shaped
blades, and leading-edge fillet edges.
2. Fabricate the mentioned blade designs in a 3-D printer.
3. Evaluate the performance of the turbine by computing the efficiency and power output.
