SECTION 6: Preventive Measures

6.1. Personal Protective Equipment to be Used

Gloves, face shield, protective goggles, gas mask, chemical resistant apron

6.2. Specific Engineering Controls to be Used

Appropriate engineering controls
It is crucial to have working and proper ventilation systems such as a fume hood in the laboratory. Persons in the lab are required to wear a respirator to avoid inhaling
toxic fumes.

6.3. Procedures to be Followed in Case of Leak or Spill

For containment : Investigate what materials you have on-site and if any need to be handled a certain way. Spill
responses should always begin with stopping to assess whether it is safe to go near a spill. Wear PPE,
clean up and decontaminate, and file reports.
Methods for cleaning up : Prevent the spread of dust and vapors, neutralize acids and bases, if possible, control the spread of
the liquid, and absorb it with an absorbent material. Dispose of the wastes and decontaminate the
area and affected equipment.

6.4 Conditions for Safe Storage, Including Any Incompatibilities

1. Precautions for Safe Handling
Follow all established procedures. Be cautious and plan ahead, always use required PPE, also make sure all containers are properly labeled and that materials are
contained in an appropriate container. Use all materials solely for their intended purpose. Persons handling hazardous materials need to read labels on chemicals they use
or handle and have Safety Data Sheets (SDSs) available to refer to that explain how to properly deal with handling, storing, and cleaning up spills, and that explain relevant
first-aid procedures. Store all hazardous materials properly, separate incompatibles, and store in ventilated, dry, cool areas.
2. Conditions for Safe Storage, Including Any Incompatibilities
Incompatible products: Chromic Acid, nitric acid, hydroxyl-containing compounds, ethylene glycol, perchloric acid, peroxides, and permanganates
Incompatible materials: Any source of heat (e. g. direct sunlight, heat sources, ignition sources)
Storage temperature: >17°C
Heat-ignition: AVOID SUBSTANCE FROM ANY HEAT SOURCES
Prohibitions on mixed storage: AVOID SUBSTANCE FROM being stored away from corrosive bases, such as sodium hydroxide, and also from oxidizing acids, such as nitric
acid.
Storage area: Stored away in an approved area away from heat or other sources of ignition and in a cool, well-ventilated area in a tightly sealed container.
Special rules on packaging: Should be clean and dry. Labeled with proper data and in a tightly sealed container.
Packaging materials: Glass, both Polyethylene and Polypropylene are resistant to all grades of Acetic Acid.

6.5. Special Shipping Information

Acetic acid is typically shipped in 10,000-gallon DOT-103 insulated or non-insulated tank cars with safety valves. The rails cars themselves are ~ 9′ outside diameter with
an overall length of ~45' to 50′, with a 6' x 6' center opening or off-set crash box openings.

SECTION 7: First Aid Measures

General Advice - Once first aid has been administered, always seek out expert medical help.
• First-aid measures after eye contact
- Cleanse immediately after contact for approximately 15 minutes with plenty of water, while occasionally moving the upper and lower eyelids.

• First-aid measures after skin contact

- Remove affected garments and instantly wash skin for 15 minutes with plenty of water.

• First-aid measures after inhalation

- Exit into the open air. Provide artificial respiration if the victim is not breathing.

• First-aid measures after ingestion

- Immediately after ingestion, rinse your mouth with cool water, dial poison control right away, and do not induce vomiting. 1-2 glasses of milk or water should be given
to the victim.

SECTION 8: Disposal Consideration

8.1. Disposal Methods

Waste disposal recommendations

Verify all applicable local, regional, and national laws and regulations before removing waste. Ensure that waste is disposed
of at the authorized waste collection sites. Refrain from mixing hazardous waste with other waste or different types of
hazardous waste as it poses a risk of pollution or complicates waste management. Hazardous waste should be managed
responsibly or seek professional help from a licensed waste disposal facility. It is the responsibility of all entities that store,
transport, or handle hazardous waste to ensure that appropriate precautions are taken to minimize the risk of pollution or
injury to humans and animals.
