Introduction

Every parent wants to send their children to school so that they can attend
classes and receive an education that will enable them to obtain a good job in the
future. However, due to distance and financial constraints, parents are finding it difficult
to send their children to school.

This chapter discusses the delivery systems that may be used for teaching and
learning. These alternative delivery systems are beneficial for students who are unable
to attend school but are eager to learn. Examine the alternative delivery systems
discussed in this chapter and try to determine whether they are as effective as formal
education, in which students meet their teachers in person within the four walls of the
classroom.

DISTANCE EDUCATION
Distance Education – method of education where students can study in their own
choice of place and time, without having to meet their teachers face-to-face. Instruction
in distance education is being delivered with the use of special materials and
technologies that may be included in alternative delivery system.

Characteristics of Distance Education

1. Provide learners with physical disabilities, work, and other personal reasons a chance
to learn and be educated without attending formal schooling.
2. It aims to achieve independent learning.
3. Provides learners with learning packages which are prepared by qualified
instructional designers and are supported by various technologies.
4. It provides accessibility to learners.
5. It provides convenience and flexibility to learners.
6. It is cost-effective.
7. It provides greater access to new technology.
8. It supports student-centered approach.

ROLES OF THE INTERNET AND THE WORLD WIDE WEB IN EDUCATION

TOOLS FOR COMMUNICATION

Netiquette for Teachers
 Be honest and polite when online.
 Think carefully about what you write.
 Show respect for other people’s personalities, lifestyles, countries, and race.
 Be careful with humor and sarcasm.
 Use proper capitalization and correct grammar and spelling when sending
messages.
 Don’t type in ALL CAPS.
 Limit the use of emoticons. Though it is acceptable to use these shortcuts to
convey emotions and commonly used phrases when communicating over the
Internet, it is best to encourage the students to convey their thoughts in writing.
 Only forward someone else’s e-mail when permission is sought from the original
sender.
 If you need a copy of an email then cc (carbon copy) or bcc (blind carbon copy) it
to your own e-mail address.
 Make your messages brief and concise.
 Give your message a meaningful subject heading that reflects the content of the
message.
 Include a signature line at the end of your message (especially in e-mails) that
contains your title, address, and phone number so people have other ways to
contact you if it becomes necessary.
 Install good virus protection software and scan attachments before opening
them.
 Boring responses like “yes”, “I agree”, and “O.K.” are discouraged because they
add up to the traffic and the people in the mailing list are busy people who cannot
afford to waste their time over such no-substance replies. However, a “thank you”
is welcome.
 If your message concerns only a specific person and if you think the whole group
cannot benefit from it, please send it to the intended person only.
 Avoid chain mails.
 Give credit where it is due. Though most of the work that we find in the internet is
free, if we use it, then we need to give credit to the writer.
 Stay on topic. Don’t post irrelevant links, comments, thoughts, or pictures
especially in a forum.

25
Technology for Teaching and Learning 2 (EDTTL2)
©2021 NDMU. All rights reserved.

 Before asking a question, check the FAQs or search the Internet if the
information or the answer is explicitly written or is easy to find.
 Check the most recent comments before you reply to an older comment.
 Read the whole article or message before giving comments. Do not reply on the
title alone.

Synchronous Communication – people communicate in “real time”.

 Chat – widely used communication tool. It is very easy to use by both teachers
and the students.

 Instant Messaging – or IM is a service that allows users to use private

chatrooms in which members alert each other when they wish to chat. With IM, a
user maintains a list of people with whom she wants to communicate. With IM, a
user can send files, videos, images, and links to websites.

 Text Messaging – allows for instantaneous communication between people that

is done with the use of cellphones.

 Videoconferencing – conducting a conference between two or more

participants at different sites by using computer networks to transmit audio and
video data. Video conferences allow its participants to see each other online live
using a web-camera and communicate to each other through it and through chat
messages.

 Webinar – or web-based seminar; a presentation, lecture, demonstration,

workshop or seminar that is done over the Web. In this kind of virtual meetings,
you can show presentation slides, share audio, and other applications, give,
receive, and discuss information in real time. You can record the whole webinar
so that it can still be played all over again.

 Social Networking – allows users to communicate virtually by keeping in touch

with each other, updating and sharing about life, interests, and creating events to
be shared with others. This is one of the most common and useful tools
nowadays among students because they can share files and exchange
information and communicate through chatting.

26
Technology for Teaching and Learning 2 (EDTTL2)
©2021 NDMU. All rights reserved.

Asynchronous Communication – person communicates anywhere and anytime; this

person should not be online to receive the message.

 E-mail – it is the oldest and most common communication tool that is easy to use
and very reliable. Through email, messages are typed, sent, stored, and
retrieved. Messages can be sent to multiple addresses and can be forwarded to
other recipients.

 Discussion boards/forums – creates social interaction for students and allows

all students to have a ‘voice’. You can set up forums for questions about a
concept, thoughts on today’s lecture, or peer help/review.

 Blogs – “web blog”; online journal that is publicly accessible.

 Wikis – web-based communication tool that allows the teacher and students to
work together, share resources (lessons/notes), and collaborate.

 Mailing Lists – or listserv; programs that store and maintain mailing lists. It is a
virtual email group of people gathered together through subscribing to one email
address.

 Tweets – text-based posts that can be up to 140 characters that are posted
within a person’s profile page.

TOOLS FOR INQUIRY

This is another role of Internet which refers to the method of solving information
problems.

Two General Techniques in Locating Information:

1. Browsing – based on hierarchical directory of headings and subheadings. To locate
information, select from these headings until you get to a listing of links appropriate
to your interests.

2. Searching – involves the use of an online database. A user submits a query and
then examines web sites that match the terms provided in the query.

Introduction

Teachers are responding positively to the use of the World Wide Web (WWW) as
an instructional tool. Web-based Instruction (WBI) makes use of the internet as a source
of instructional material. WBI can be used to access instructional materials at any time
and from any place. This is also useful in the context of distance education.

"The World Wide Web is merely a tool, as in a chalkboard, overhead projector, or

VCR. Tools don't teach. When effectively implemented, they assist in the learning
process. If learning on the part of the students has been helped by the use of a tool,
then the tool has been used successfully" (Rosen, 1998).

This chapter discusses the various web tools and resources used in the
classroom. The World Wide Web contains a wealth of knowledge that can be used to
educate and learn. This chapter describes the evolution of the web from web 1.0 to web
5.0. This chapter describes Web 1.0 as a read-only web, Web 2.0 as a read-write web,
Web 3.0 as a semantic web, Web 4.0 as a mobile web, and Web 5.0 as the emotional
web.

Activity

Provide the background of the evolution of the web from web 1.0 to web 5.0. Then, give
examples of the technologies or teaching tools used in these eras.

FINAL PRACTICUM

ILO: At the end of this lesson, the students can produce creatively an instructional video
of their chosen topic from their specialization through a lecture video-making
activity.

BTI: 1.3.1 - Show skills in the positive use of ICT to facilitate the teaching and learning
process.
4.5.1 - Show skills in the selection, development and use of a variety of teaching
and learning resources, including ICT, to address learning goals.

INTRODUCTION

An online lecture is a form of educational lecture that is designed to be delivered

online. Lectures are videotaped, audiotaped, or both, and then uploaded and made
available on a specified website. Students may go to a specific designated site at a time
that is convenient for them to view the lecture online.

Traditionally, vocal education is only possible when the teacher and the student
are in the same space, with the teacher passing on knowledge in close proximity to the
student. With the advent of video communications, online lectures are now possible.
The invention of the online lecture allows the instructor and student to no longer have to
be in the same location to teach and learn.

A video lesson or lecture is a video that contains instructional content about a

specific subject that needs to be understood.

The format can differ. It may be a video of a teacher speaking to the camera,
photos, text about the subject, or a combination of these. The Khan Academy has had
success teaching mathematics using notes written on Yahoo!’s doodle pad and narrated
by Salman Khan (educator). These were then uploaded to YouTube, where they quickly
gained popularity and influence. Such lectures are an important component of flip
teaching, in which the video lesson does the initial work of communicating the
essentials of the subject.

Acquisition of Knowledge

WHY USE A VIDEO?

When used correctly, videos can be an important tool for engaging students with
course material and deepening learning. You may consider using video for the following
reasons:
 Have an experiential aspect by displaying locations or phenomena that students
would not normally see.
 Dissection of procedural tasks
 Catalyst for debate
 Using real-world examples to connect concepts
 Improve your media literacy skills.
 Promote critical thought.
 Allow more time in class for debate and activity.
 Allow students to learn difficult topics at their own pace by allowing them to watch
at their own pace.

HOW TO USE A VIDEO?

Video can be used in two ways:
1) to supplement or improve comprehension of course content, or

2) as the primary mode of content acquisition. Depending on the instructional need,

students can watch video content in or out of class.

To decide the best use of video for your course, describe your learning outcome
clearly. The learning result must be precise and quantifiable. Furthermore, video
material can be used in combination with instructional exercises that demonstrate
students' achievement of learning outcomes.

HOW TO PRODUCE A VIDEO?

Although there is a lot of existing content on the Internet, you may not be able to find
the perfect fit for your unique needs, or you may choose to create your own original
content. You'd have to make your own instructional videos in these situations.

49
Technology for Teaching and Learning 2 (EDTTL2)
©2021 NDMU. All rights reserved.

If you are going to make course videos, here are some realistic guidelines to
improve the final product's quality:

 Preparation for Production

Define the video's primary goal and write a script or outline main talking points.

 Duration of the video

Make the videos as short as possible (10 minutes or less). For more detail, see
How MOOC Video Production Affects Student Engagement by Philip Guo,
University of Rochester.

 Communicate in a conversational tone

It's fine if you make a mistake or stumble over a word; just correct it and keep
recording.

 Make use of a range of graphics (pictures, illustrations, animations, etc.)

Graphics that endorse the ideas being addressed should be used to supplement
the verbal knowledge being presented.

 Make materials available

To meet the needs of all learners, consider captioning your video or offering an
audio transcript.

 Keep all of your videos in one location

You can host them in the LMS, on YouTube with links in the LMS, or elsewhere,
but consistency would make managing the content easier in the future.
