In the present situation power becomes basic need for human life. Energy is responsible for
major developments of any country’s economy. Conventional energy sources generate most of
the energy of today’s world. But the population is increasing day by day and the conventional
energy sources are diminishing. Moreover, these conventional energy sources are polluting and
responsible for global warming. So, non- conventional sources are needed to be developed for
power generation which are clean, environment friendly and sustainable. In this research, we
propose a renewable non-conventional energy source based on speed breaker mechanism. Our
project is to enlighten the streets utilizing the jerking pressure which is wasted during the
vehicles passes over speed breaker in roadside. We can tap the energy generated by moving
vehicles and produce power by using the speed breaker as power generating unit. The kinetic
energy of the moving vehicles can be converted into mechanical energy through rack and pinion
mechanism and this mechanical energy will be converted to electrical energy using generator
which will be used for lighting the street lights. Therefore, by using this mechanism we can save
lot of energy which can fulfill our future demands.
Our project is low and cost effective. Electricity would be supplied to all parts of
country irrespective of rural or Urban areas.. The project includes all the right foundational
elements such as strategic initiatives, goals and activities that greatly increases the possibilities of
successful execution. If the targeted funder links it’s planning efforts together (resource
planning, financial and regulatory planning in a consistent manner), our project clearly
communicates priorities for moving forward and is more reliable and Eco-friendly.
Using this proposed technology, you can get following advantages:
Power generation with low cost.
Simple construction, mature technology
Less floor area required and no obstruction to traffic
No need of manual work during power generation.
Low installation and maintenance cost
Power generation using non-conventional energy sources.
Easy for maintenance and no fuel transportation problem.
Background and Purpose
This project will help us to know that how can we change kinetic energy into electrical energy
and use it in different ways or even we can store it. One night, I was going on car and I saw some
street lights there but they were not working so I thought that there should be another way that
we can provide free of cost electricity to these street lights. Large amount of electricity could be
generated saving a lot of money and if implemented will be very beneficial to government. It is a
project to generate power by converting the kinetic energy generated by vehicle going up on a
speed breaker into mechanical energy. We are looking forward to conserve the kinetic energy
that get wasted while vehicles move. This generated power can be stored by using different
electrical devices. This energy could be supplied to street lights, traffic lights and nearby places
to facilitate country’s economy. It can be made more efficient by adding solar panels to provide
energy when vehicles do not move.
In this paper, we show energy conversion from kinetic energy to rotational energy and rotational
energy to electrical energy respectively. This project explains the mechanism of electricity
generation from speed breakers.
It is a simple but optimum process to generate energy from speed breaker arrangements.
There are a large number of vehicles running on the road. These vehicles are going over a
number of speed breakers present on the road. We want to replace this traditional speed breaker
with our proposed speed breaker. It is an Electro-Mechanical unit. This system utilizes
both mechanical technologies and electrical techniques for the power generation and its storage.
The generation of electricity will be proportional to the traffic density.
PROJECT DESCRIPTION
Objective and goals involved in our Pilot project and Sub project are the sustainable production
and consumption of electricity for sustainable cities and Communities by using the cheapest
resources and to facilitate my nation to stand between highly developed countries in near future.
My project harvest energy from speed breaker by making gear arrangements and using electronic
gadgets whenever a vehicle is in motion. A vehicle travelling at high speed strikes this system to
generate power and when the vehicle moves over the inclined plates, it gains height resulting in
increase in potential energy which is wasted in conventional rumble strip. When the breaker
comes down, then crank a lever fitted to ratchet- wheel type mechanism (angular motion
convertor) which in turn rotates a gear sharp loaded with recoil springs generate electricity.
Beneath speed breaker setting up an electromechanical unit could help us in conserving the
energy and using it for power generation. The output can be improved by arranging these in
series.
In this research, vehicle pressure on the speed breaker which is converted into rotary energy
through rack and pinion using hydraulic press. Consequently, this rotary energy rotates
generator that generates electrical power which is being stored through battery using charging
circuit. When the vehicle passes the speed breaker, the expansion of springs takes the speed
breaker at previous state which done the system reverse.
The charging circuit charges a battery. The Inverter circuit converts this DC voltage into AC
voltage and a step up transformer.
The second sub project used to enhance the generation of electricity is use of piezoelectric
material on roads and footpaths. It is possible to generate electricity from the traffic including
moving vehicles, cyclist and even pedestrians. This project involves the use of solar or
piezoelectric blocks.
Project Needs and Key Personnel
My teachers (Ma’am Saima Ikram and Ma’am Samina Chaudhary) facilitated to understand the
mechanism involved in these projects and detailed meeting was organized by my school with a
relevant FESCO personnel to discuss the cause and effect of this project. I consulted a traffic
Warden also to estimate the implementation of this project on Canal Road Faisalabad. I
researched through Internet to find out the work done in past regarding this and what further can
be done to satisfy my curiosity and welfare of my motherland.
Materials required for Pilot Project
Batteries
LDR sensors
PIEZO Electric Sensors
2 Gear Motors
Roller (Metal Rod)
Water Proof Sheet
Light Poles
Let’s consider,
The speed breaker project would take around 3 to 4,00,000 on one speed breaker.
If the mass of vehicle moving over the speed breaker is 350Kg (Approximately) and height of
speed breaker is 15 cm, the work done will be equal to the weight of the body distance travelled
by the pressure of vehicle. Proposed system can provide 250 v and 24 amps.
This power generated by vehicles in one speed breaker on a busy road is more than sufficient to
run four street lights in the night time.
Materials required for Sub project (Piezoelectric sensor)
Piezo
Wires
Rectifier
Capacitor
Piezoelectric sensors made from crystals produce small electrical current when squashed. This
process of generation is called piezoelectricity. Current produced is fed into nearby batteries.
These batteries are constantly recharge by the movement of pedestrians on the road. Piezoelectric
device could provide an average of 400 kilowatt of power enough to power 162 homes.
Moreover, the piezoelectricity is a competitive and clean or alternative energy source. Estimated
cost to install piezoelectric sensors is around 1,00,000 on 50 to 60 kilometers
If Pakistan opts these RENEWABLE Projects, the estimated energy production can be one
kilowatt for every 10 meter of road.
Impact of project
The listed Projects are non-conventional and the way of power generation technique is also echo
friendly. It has advantage that it does not utilize any external source. By using this system ,
we will be able to reduce power crisis and load shedding. The stored electricity could satisfy the
daily requirement for street lighting. We can also use it for signal system on road, tollbooth
or any other useful work. So from every angle, we can see this project is very much effective to
reduce the power crisis in Pakistan.
