1.6. Power Deratings

The rated output current for power modules is defined at 1550 VDC, with an ambient temperature of
50 ºC (122ºF) and below 1000 m.a.s.l. This power can be increased or decreased according to the
different factors defined below:

1.6.1. DUE TO THE AMBIENT TEMPERATURE:

The power converter has been designed for extreme ambient conditions. Regarding ambient
temperature, power modules allow working at rated power up to 122ºF (50ºC) conditions
without performing any derating.

1.6.2. DUE TO DC OPERATING VOLTAGE:

The maximum power delivered by the WD3s AC/DC power modules decreases over the 1500.00 VDC.

1.6.3. DUE TO ALTITUDE ABOVE SEA LEVEL

• Temperature increment-

GPTech power converters are designed for optimum performance at a height location below 1,000
meters above sea level (MASL).

For altitudes above 1,000 MASL, variation of air density must be considered to maximize heat
evacuation and, as a result, to obtain the maximum output power.

The rated temperature of the inverter is affected as Table 6 shows. The altitude is introduced in the
converter derating by the modification of the operation temperature used for the temperature
derating curve.

This modified operation temperature is calculated using the ambient temperature plus a value that
depends on the altitude as Table 6 shows.

• Voltage Limits

The altitude also must be considered for the maximum system voltage, as a result of increasing
altitude, air density is reduced and thus air isolation.

GPTech power converters have been designed following international standards considering
correction factors for creepage and clearance distance, so voltage derating is not required up to 2,000
MLS.

On the other hand, altitude impacts diminishing current density since the cooling effect of the air is
diminished too.

Table 7 indicates the maximum ambient temperature allowed for altitude ranges up to 4,000 MASL for
the power modules as well as the maximum AC and DC voltage at different heights.

1.7. APCS Controller

GPTech fully-functional solution and all the equipment contained in the APCS Power Station are
managed by the APCS controller, including DC source signals (ESS, trackers, DC optimizers, etc.)

APCS Controller is included inside the Power Converter (head cabinet) and can manage different
events and situations during normal operation, reporting alarms and errors when necessary,
guaranteeing.

Several devices and models can be installed depending on the specific solution for each project. The
Figure 9 shows a simplified APCS Controller Integration Schema:

Figure 8. Controller Scheme

The APCS Controller is intended to support a seamless PPC integration and it also has different features
such as monitoring, control algorithms, error handling, protections, and device management.
This section briefly explains the main features of the APCS Controller’s controls. The different control
parameters must be agreed upon between GPTech and the customer.
a) Different control interfaces
With these different interfaces, the APCS Controller avoids overwriting the same command
from different controllers:
▪ Remote: APCS is controlled via PPC
▪ Manual: APCS Controller is controlled via HMI.
▪ Local: APCS is controlled via SCADA.
▪ Maintenance: APCS is controlled via webserver.
b) Soft Start-Stop
The Soft Start-Stop control provides the capacity of starting up or shutting down all
controllable equipment in a safe and controlled way.

c) Active and Reactive Power Control

APCS Controller implements an active and reactive power control. The active and reactive set
points can be set through an external Modbus reference or the local HMI. These set points are
smartly divided between online converters to reach them, with the following considerations:
▪ Limitation of the external set points. The external set points should be within the limits
related to the configuration parameters. Otherwise, the set point values are saturated
with those limits.
▪ Configurable ramp rates for individual active power set points to the converters.
▪ The reactive references sent to the DC/AC follow a default ramp rate.
▪ Distribution of individual references depending on the number of DC/AC out of service.
▪ Smooth transition when there is any change in the number of DC/AC running.
d) Error Handling
Control system detects and manages special situations, depending on their importance:
▪ Alarm: Event that causes minor disturbance in the normal course of the control
system, but allows the system to continue working with a minor impact.
▪ Error: Event that causes a serious disturbance in the control system and stops the
system. The system is locked until the error disappears.

e) ESS management2
The APCS Controller can manage an external ESS. It includes:

Dynamic Active Power Limits (DAPL)

The Dynamic Active Power Limits control block is a group of limitations according to ESS
characteristics and control signals. It consists of limit curve characteristics defined by
parameters and instantaneous limits defined by control signals generated by the ESS.

In addition to the limitation function, this block calculates the active power reference and
maximum charge and discharge power.

SOC Recovery

The APCS Controller manages the internal active power reference by adding or subtracting an
offset to the external reference to keep the SOC within acceptable limits.

When there are several APCS in the same plant, it is recommended to implement this feature
at the APCS level to reach optimal performance.

BESS Protection

1.8.2. MV SKID SOLUTION

Main characteristics of the MV Skid solution option are:
o The LV connection of the transformer are at the lower part of the front of the cube, as the MV
bushing are located at the top of it as usual.
o The anchor of the transformer to the skid withstands the seismic forces according to IEEE Std
693-1997 in “High Seismic Performance Level” condition.
o The MV connection between the transformer and the switch gear is made at the factory.
o The transformer seismic withstand capability compliance will be defined and quoted for each
project.
o The skid can include a steel oil pool as an optional.
o The MV Switchgear operation voltage depends on the final requirements of the plant.
o This MV switchgear will be suitable for outdoor placement with an appropriate protection
degree (at least IP54, by its enclosure or using an enclosure to guarantee it).
o The isolator/Load Break (2L) have an earthing pole (ON-OFF-EARTH) and voltage indicators.
o These indicators will be available on the SCADA. Grounding Switch-Disconnector with manual
handle with interlock; copper plate for grounding installation is included.
o Single core connection to MV terminal output
o Aimed for outdoor installation; it includes external Protection:
- Color RAL7035 or RAL7031. For ambient C4 (ISO 12944-2)

1.8.3. LV WIRING
The connections between the inverter and the transformer LV side are made with copper plates, sized
to support the maximum current of the inverter. These plates will be covered by a grounded metallic
case to avoid any contact with them.
All the control and sensor wiring between the inverter and the MV Skid solution are also included.
They will depend on the final selected component and functionality.
The number of cables, materials and sections considered in the project is subject to variation according
to market availability at the moment of the project execution.

1.9. Grounding
The grounding system is designed such that, in the case of an electric system failure, there is no
potential hazardous voltage in any internal or external access point of the Power Station where people
can either stand or circulate. For that purpose, the site grounding system must ensure total ohmic
resistance lower than 10 .

1.10. Ancillary Service Panel4

This panel contains all the protections to feed all the APCS power station components as well as BESS2:
• External feeding lines protected by circuit breakers according to the project diagram.
• All the connections are labeled and pre-insulated.
• Labelling with an electric diagram of the panel on the door.
• Voltage LED light (optional).
• UPS (optional): The control, emergency and communication systems of the APCS may be
supplied during an AC voltage fault with a UPS system. Depending on customer needs, the UPS
could be installed in the ancillary panel or another cabinet.

1.11. Ancillary Service Transformer5

Installed within the metallic enclosure of the APCS power station, the ancillary service transformer
will have the following characteristics:
Type Dry
Cooling system AN
Nominal power 15kVA
