TVL-IA-EIM
Quarter 4 – Module 3 (2nd Cycle)
Prepare and Make Changes to
Electrical Schematics and
Drawings
What I Need to Know

This module was designed and written with you in mind. It is here to help
you master the skills in electrical installation and maintenance. The scope of
this module permits it to be used in many different learning situations. The
language used recognizes the diverse vocabulary level of students. The
lessons are arranged to follow the standard sequence of the course. But the
order in which you read them can be changed to correspond with the
textbook you are now using.

The module contains the lesson:

• Prepare and Interpret Electrical Schematics and Drawings

After going through this module, you are expected to:

1. Identify the requisites in preparing and making significant changes
with electric schematics and drawings.
2. Carry out proper preparation of electrical schematics and drawings.
3. Appreciate the importance of proper preparation of electrical
schematics and drawings.

1
What I Know

Directions: Below is a drawing of an electrical plan. Enumerate the number

of outlets, bulbs, 1 gang switch, 2 gang switch and 3 gang switch. Follow the
format below. Write your activity in your activity notebook.

Number of electrical fixtures found in the electrical plan.

2 gang switches
3 gang switches

2
What’s In

Preparation of electrical schematics and drawings as well as making its significant

changes are very important in order to effectively communicate and convey ideas
through diagrams. Hence, the topic on interpreting technical drawings from the
previous module provides an overview of how to read and identify every single detail
in a technical drawing, thus serves as the fundamental idea for this module.

Notes to the Teacher

This module contains the topics on the preparation and
making changes to electrical schematics and drawings. It
encompasses proper drawing and identification of
electrical schematics as well as proper selection of
equipment to use in accordance with job requirements.

To enhance the learners’ experience in this module, varied

activities are introduced relevant to the topic. Hence, a
thorough explanation on the use of this module is required
as well as keeping track of the learners’ progress to ensure
its effectiveness.

Continued guidance and encouragement is expected of the

facilitator within the duration of the module in order for
the learners to sustain its requirements.

Drawing Circuit Diagrams

One thing to consider in drawing circuit diagrams is to develop a skill in

drawing neatly and clearly.

Follow these tips for best results:

• Make sure you use the correct symbol for each component.
• Draw connecting wires as straight lines (use a ruler).
• Put a 'blob' ( ) at each junction between wires.
• Label components such as resistors and capacitors with their values.
• The positive (+) supply should be at the top and the negative (-) supply
at the bottom. The negative supply is usually labelled 0V, zero volts.

Electrical Drawings and Schematics Overview

Designing, installing, and troubleshooting of electrical systems requires the

use of various drawings to give engineers, installers, and technicians a
visual representation of the systems they work with.

Electrical equipment and circuitry are often expressed as symbols and lines
that represent the various components and connections within a system.
The level of complexity within an electrical drawing will vary depending on
the intended purpose and personnel working with the drawing.

Design engineers and technicians use schematics to build and troubleshoot

complex circuits, while plant operators use single-line and riser diagrams to
facilitate switching operations within their distribution system. Knowing
how to read and interpret various types of electrical drawings are an
essential skill that all electrical workers must possess to effectively carry out
their tasks.

The symbols and lines within an electrical drawing speak a language that
everyone involved must understand in order to design, build, and
troubleshoot electrical systems. In this article, we will briefly describe
several types of common electrical diagrams encountered in the field and
explain their purpose.

The flow of current in a conductor or wire can be represented by diagram.

There are two types of diagram: pictorial diagram and schematic diagram.

A. Pictorial diagram is a sketch of electrical circuit that shows the external

appearance of each component. It is much like a photograph of the circuit
and uses simple images of parts.

5
https://technologystudent.com/elec1/bulb1.htm

B. Schematic diagram is a sketch showing the components of the circuit

using standard electrical symbols. It shows the actual number of
components and how the wiring is routed but not the actual location.

Sample
schematic diagrams of one bulb controlled by single pole switch using direct
current (Diagram A) and alternating current (Diagram B) source.

C. Types of Circuit

1. Series Circuit is a circuit in which lamps are arranged in a chain, so that

the current has only one path to take. The current is the same through each
load. Example of this is the Christmas lights. It consists of several bulbs
that are connected side by side to meet the voltage requirement which is 220
volts for alternating current.

6
2. Parallel Circuit is a circuit in which lamps are connected across the
wires. The voltage across each load on parallel circuit is the same. The
advantage of using parallel circuit is that even if one of the lamps fails, still
the remaining lamps will function.

7
ELECTRICAL PLAN

Electrical plan is a graphical presentation of electrical wiring connections

to install in a particular house or building. It indicates the position of
electrical fixtures such as convenience outlets, switches, lightings, doorbells,
and others to be installed.

What’s More

A. Directions: In a separate sheet, make a diagram of the following:

1. one lamp controlled by one (1) switch

2. one lamp controlled by two (2) switches.
