1. Before electrical tests, isolate all CT secondary circuits by using

the terminal blocks slide links. Ensure that no devices are
connected to the CT.
2. Perform the Insulation Resistance Test, as following:
The solidly grounded windings must have the ground removed to
measure the insulation resistance of the grounded winding.
The following test connections should be used, depending on the
type of CT and the number of secondary windings.
Field tests of insulation shall not be in excess of 75% of the factory
test voltages as per IEEE Std C57.13.5.
The values shall not be less than 200 MΩ.
NOTE—The test equipment must be at zero current before the
equipment is turned off and disconnected to prevent saturating the
CT.
a. Primary to grounded secondary: test voltage is 5 kV DC for one
minute. (excepted in case of ring CT).
b. Secondary to grounded primary: test voltage is 1 kV DC for one
minute. (Secondary to ground only in case of ring CT).
c. Secondary core to core 1kV DC for one minute, while the other
cores are grounded.
3. Perform the Excitation Characteristics Test (knee Point):
Determination of knee point voltage (Vk).
Check that the measured (Vk) is matched with the rated (Vk) and
approved scheme.
For class X the exciting current Ie at a voltage equal to Vk shall not
exceed the specified limit.
Results shall be compared with FAT results.
The excitation curve of the CT should remain very close to the
original curve when tested at the factory
4. Perform the Winding Resistance (Rct) Measurement.
The ambient temperature shall be recorded and the winding
resistance shall be corrected to 75°C.
The CT should be demagnetized after completion of this test.
The resistance should be around the original data measured in the
factory.
5. Perform the Polarity Test.
This test proves that the predicted direction of secondary current
flow is correct for a given direction of primary current flow.
The markings and polarities for primary and secondary terminals
shall be checked in accordance with the nameplate, approved
design and protection requirement.
6. Turns ratio:
Test Turns Ratio in accordance with the marked ratios using one
of the approved CT test equipment.
7. Normalize all CT secondary circuits by using the terminal blocks
slide links.

8. CT Secondary Injection Test

Verify secondary circuits from terminal to terminal, test switches,
and shorting/isolating links by secondary injection of CTs by:
a. Injecting different currents in all three phases to verify the
segregation of the phases. In this case, there will be a vectorial
summation of the phases’ currents in the neutral.
b. Injecting equal magnitude of current in all phases. In this case,
no current should flow in the neutral.
9. Secondary loop resistance measurement test (burden test).
Burden Should not exceed maximum burden as specified in the
accuracy class.
10. Check the single earth point is as the approved schematic
drawing.
11. CT Primary Injection Test
a. All CT tests are completed successfully.
b. Precautions:
1. Isolate all high impedance relays.
2. Take the suitable action to prevent any expected problem in
trip relays or other during primary injection (put all relays on
“out of service” position to prevent false trip or remove all
corresponding trip relays).
c. Tests:
1. Verify the Core Identification of each phase by initially
primary current (20% of the lowest primary rated current).
2. Check all short and isolation facilities for all secondary
circuits.
3. Perform the primary injection:
i. In case, more than one CT are involved, then the
primary injected current shall be limited to the
minimum
primary rated current.
ii. The primary injection shall be performed for each
phase
to ground and each phase to others (R-N, Y-N, B-N, R-
Y, Y-B & B-R).
iii. Make sure that during primary injection, there is no
noise from the CT under test.
iv. Confirm that the neutral path of the secondary circuit is
healthy, not broken and the neutral current is the same
value of phase current during the phase to ground
primary injection (R-N, Y-N, B-N).
v. Confirm that no current in neutral path of the
secondary circuit during the phase to phase primary
injection (RY,
YB, BR).
vi. Measure the current on all terminals, test switches,
relays, BCU’s, IED’s & meters, then measure the

current from the device display (from the first terminal

to device display and verify the CT adopted ratio.
vii. Perform the primary injection test for all BCT's (bushing
current transformers) during the power transformer
differential protection stability test.
viii. Normalize all the circuits.
12. High voltage test:
During normal HV tests on switchgear or GIS the CTs are
included in the HV test. CT secondary shall be shorted to ground
at the nearest terminal block to the CT and isolated from relays
and meters.
13. Normalization all CT circuits.
