Maps of the River Valley Civilizations

Map 1: the Ancient Near East

Directions: Study the map on pages 38 and 46 of your textbook. Follow these
steps to complete Map 1: the Ancient Near East.

1. In the upper left corner of your map draw a compass rose in blue or black pen
and identify the directions of north, south, east, and west.

2. The latitude and longitude lines are drawn at 4 degree intervals. Label these on
the west and north sides of the map.

3. Label each of the following bodies of water in blue or black pen in flowing script.
Shade these waters light blue:
Black Sea Dead Sea Persian Gulf
Caspian Sea Mediterranean Sea Red Sea

4. Trace over the following rivers in blue and label them in blue or black pen:
Euphrates River Nile River
Jordan River Tigris River

5. Trace the ancient shoreline of the Persian Gulf (shown by a dotted line) and label
it in blue or black pen.

6. Label the following lands IN SMALL ALL CAPITAL LETTERS:


LOWER EGYPT MESOPOTAMIA UPPER EGYPT

7. Label and underline the following cities:


Babylon Nineveh Tyre
Giza Sidon Ur
Jerusalem Thebes

8. Shade the Fertile Crescent green.

9. Shade the Nile River Valley yellow.

Map 2: Ancient India

Directions: Study the map on pages 72, 73, 74, and 82 of your textbook. Follow
these steps to complete Map 2: Ancient India.

1. In the upper left corner of your map draw a compass rose in blue or black pen
and identify the directions of north, south, east, and west.

2. The latitude and longitude lines are drawn at 5 degree intervals. Label these on
the west and north sides of the map.

3. Label each of the following bodies of water in blue or black pen in flowing script.
Shade these waters light blue:
Arabian Sea Bay of Bengal Indian Ocean

4. Trace over the following rivers in blue and label them in blue or black pen:
Ganges River Indus River

5. In UNDERLINED SMALL ALL CAPITAL LETTERS label the HIMALAYA


Mountains in blue or black pen. In brown, make wavy brown lines over this
mountain chain.

6. Label and underline the following cities:


Harappa Mohenjo-Daro Pataliputra

7. Shade the area of the Mauryan Empire under Asoka in 250 BC orange.

Directions: Study the map on pages 89, 92, 100, and 101 of your textbook. Follow
these steps to complete Map 3: Ancient China.

1. In the upper left corner of your map draw a compass rose in blue or black pen
and identify the directions of north, south, east, and west.

2. The latitude and longitude lines are drawn at 10 degree intervals. Label these on
the west and south sides of the map.

3. Label each of the following bodies of water in blue or black pen in flowing script.
Light shade these waters blue:
Bay of Bengal Sea of Japan Yellow Sea
East China Sea South China Sea

4. Trace over the following rivers in blue and label them in blue or black pen:
Chang Jiang (Yangtze River) Wei He
Huang He (Yellow River) Xi Jiang

5. Label and underline the following cities:

6. In UNDERLINED SMALL ALL CAPITAL LETTERS label the HIMALAYA
