Looking up in Space
Enid
My interest in stars and space began when I became friends with Jenny.
She’s got a big house with a telescope on her balcony. Her dad’s an
astronomer and I’ve learned a lot about the stars and planets from him. Last
summer, Jenny’s family gave me a book about the solar system for my
birthday. Jenny’s dad teaches at university and I’d love to be like him when
I’m older. Sadly, we’re leaving our flat next month and moving to another
city. I hope I can visit them often.
Katie
My parents bought me a book about astronomy for my 11th birthday, and
that’s what started it all. On each page, there were pictures of the stars and
how to find them. At that time, I didn’t have a telescope, because we lived
in a small flat, but we’ve moved to a house in the countryside, and last
month, I saved up enough money to order a telescope. It arrived last night.
I can’t wait to use it!
Maggie
I first learnt about astrology when we did a class project on the planets and
I made a model of the solar system. I used to sit in the garden and stare at
the stars but a few months ago, we moved to a flat in the city centre. There’s
a lot of light at night, and this doesn’t help watching the stars. But, my family
often go camping and we always borrow a telescope from my uncle. In the
countryside, it’s easier to see the stars because the skies are dark.

Two Hobbies in One
by Tina Jackson
My family loves swimming and we often go to the pool. My parents are scuba divers, so they spend a lot
of time in the water. They believe that everyone should be able to swim, so I went to swimming lessons
from a young age.
When I was in primary school, I also started going to dance lessons with friends and we often entered
competitions and won. However, when we were 11, everyone went to different secondary schools and
stopped going to dance lessons, but I really wanted to continue.
Two weeks later, my parents and I were watching TV and we saw a documentary about synchronised
swimming. The swimmers were so beautiful dancing in the water, and I thought it would be a really
good way to combine my hobbies of dance and swimming. So, I started going to a synchronised
swimming class for beginners at my local sports centre.
Everyone thinks that synchronised swimming is easy. But it’s actually harder than it looks. One of the
hardest parts is that we have to hold our breath while lifting team members into the air and keeping our
feet off the bottom of the swimming pool. And, we always have to smile. That’s a lot to do all at once!
Like dancing, we have to practise the moves as much as we can. I used to get annoyed when people
made mistakes. Now, I understand that being part of a team means being patient with everyone in the
group.
