CHAPTER 1

1.1. Introduction

Job satisfaction describes the degree to which individuals enjoy their job. It was described by Edwin
Locke (1976) as the state of feeling resulting from appraising one‟s job experiences. While job
satisfaction results from both how we think about our work (our cognition) and how we feel about our
work (our affect) (Saari & Judge, 2004), it is described in terms of affect. Job satisfaction is impacted
by the work itself, our personality, and the culture we come from and live in (Saari & Judge, 2004).

Job satisfaction is typically measured after a change in an organization, such as a shift in the
management model, to assess how the change affects employees. It may also be routinely measured by
an organization to assess one of many factors expected to affect the organization‟s performance. In
addition, polling companies like Gallup regularly measure job satisfaction on a national scale to gather
broad information on the state of the economy and the workforce (Saad, 2012).

On the revenue side of the balance sheet, loyal and committed employees are more likely to go "above
and beyond" to meet customer needs and are highly motivated to work to the best of their ability.

On the cost side, loyal employees stay longer, resist competitive job offers, do not actively look for
other employment and recommend the company to others as a good place to work. These four
behaviors positively influence the cost side of the balance sheet.

In other words, rather than focusing only on retention (that is, trying to retain employees who have
already decided to leave), organizations should proactively recognize the benefits of understanding,
managing and improving employee satisfaction. The most successful organizations are those that can
adapt their organizational behavior to the realities of the current work environment where success is
dependent upon innovation, creativity and flexibility.
One of the key steps to understanding and improving employee satisfaction is by acknowledging the
importance of the following factors in building loyalty and satisfaction:

 Broadly-defined responsibilities rather than narrowly-defined job functions

 Effective and regular performance evaluations, both formally and informally
 A corporate emphasis on employee learning, development and growth
 Wide-ranging employee participation in the organization as a whole.

Typically, a combination of factors influences employees' decisions to stay at their current job.
Contributing factors include satisfying work, a sense of job security, clear opportunities for
advancement, a compelling corporate mission combined with the ability to contribute to the
organization's success, and a feeling that their skills are being effectively used and challenged.
Specifically, employees who enjoy their work identify themselves with their employer and perceive
that the company is flexible regarding work and family issues also intend to stay with the organization.

1.2. NEED FOR THE STUDY

A company is only as strong and successful as its members, its employees, are. By measuring
employee satisfaction in its key factors, organizations can study the strategy needed to improve
employee satisfaction, retention, and productivity.

Employees who aren‟t satisfied with their jobs are very likely to leave. If they don‟t quit and continue
to work they can become a source of bad morale and do a great deal of harm in the organization. In
most organizations when an employee quits the major reason that is assumed by the management for
the employee to relieve themselves from the organizations could be that they are not satisfied with the
salary package.

Surveying employees on a regular basis is a great way to stay in touch with the pulse of the business.
Before launching a survey though it is important to establish the ground rules.

Many employees will be unwilling to express their honest feelings. We need to make sure that the
confidentiality is maintained and the feedback provided will be implemented.

Explain that employee comments are important to the company. State what will be done with the
results. And then live up to those statements. Employees will become doubtful of management‟s
intentions if they don‟t follow through. There are many resources to assist companies in the survey
process. However most human resource managers are very capable of designing and conducting their
own employee satisfaction survey.

1.3. OBJECTIVES OF THE STUDY

PRIMARY:

 To understand the various aspects related to Employees satisfaction in the organization.

 To know Employees understanding of company‟s mission and vision statement.
 To check Employees satisfaction levels with their team leaders, with the Management and
within the team members.

SECONDARY OBJECTIVES

 To measure Employees satisfaction on Compensation and Benefits.

 To find out the expectations of Employees from Management.
 To compare the desired satisfaction with the actual one.

1.4. SCOPE OF THE STUDY

The study covers all levels of Employees and various aspects of Employees like:

 Interpersonal relations,
 Opportunities for career growth,
 Compensation and benefits,
 Training and development,
 Working conditions,
 Communications,
These aspects were taken into consideration to measure Employee Satisfaction.
CHAPTER 2

2.1. REVIEW OF LITERATURE

Job satisfaction can also be explained as the agreeable emotional condition resulting from the
assessment of one‟s job as attaining or facilitating the accomplishment of one‟s job values‟‟ (Yang,
2009).

Job satisfaction does have impact on future performance through the job involvement, but higher
performance also makes people feel more satisfied and committed. It is a cycle of event that is clearly
in keeping with the development perspective. Attitudes such as satisfaction and involvement are
important to the employees to have high levels of performance. The results of the study revealed that
attitudes namely satisfaction and involvement, and performance are significantly correlated.

Velnampy (2008) Research has shown that there may be many environmental features that can be
created and maintained to give employees job satisfaction. Pay and benefits, communication,
motivation, justice and leisure time all seem to play a part as to whether employees are satisfied with
their jobs, according to studies which helps to retain employees.

(Brewer 2000; Employee 2000; Money 2000; Wagner 2000 Employers have a need to keep
employees from leaving and going to work for other companies. This is true because of the great costs
associated with hiring and retraining new employees.

The best way to retain employees is by providing them with job satisfaction and opportunities for
advancement in their careers (Eskildesen 2000, Hammer 2000).

Financial reward is one of the factors that produce job satisfaction as mentioned in need fulfillment
model by Kreitner and Kinicki (2006).

In the study of Khojasteh (1993 revealed that Pay and security were greater motivators for private than
for public sectors Professional development opportunities and salary packages are of great importance
that create job satisfaction factors (Grace & Khalsa, 2003). top most factors in producing job
satisfaction include financial resources, faculty workload, and technology impact (Miller et al., 2001).
Compensation systems may affect faculty‟s job satisfaction and thus influence intentions to quite as
well retention rates. Higher compensation level leads to higher job satisfaction and retention rates for
faculty are also higher. An enhanced reward in organizations also enhances job satisfaction (Boyt et
al., 2000).

For understanding job satisfaction it is required to know some major discussions of the industrial
psychology. The concept of job satisfaction is related to this field and and Herzberg‟s duality theory
is one of its major propositions (1959).

Organizations have significant effects on the people who work for them and some of those effects are
reflected in how people feel about their work (Spector, 1997). This makes job satisfaction an issue of
substantial importance for both employers and employees. As many studies suggest, employers benefit
from satisfied employees as they are more likely to profit from lower staff turnover and higher
productivity if their employees experience a high level of job satisfaction. However, employees should
also be happy in their work, given the amount of time they have to devote to it throughout their
working lives‟ (Nguyen, Taylor and Bradley, 2003a).

Bob (2011) This constitutes measuring job values, designing and maintaining pay structures, paying
for performance, competence and skill, and providing employee benefits. However, compensation
management is not just about money. It is also concerned with that non-financial compensation which
provides intrinsic or extrinsic motivation.

Pearce (2010) Compensation implies having a compensation structure in which the employees who
perform better are paid more than the average performing employees.

Hewitt (2009). Compensation Management as the name suggests, implies having a compensation
structure in which the employees who perform better are paid more than the average performing
employees. This encourages top-performers to work harder and helps to build a competitive
atmosphere in the organization.

Harrison and Liska (2008) in their study posit that reward is the centre piece of the employment
contract-after all it is the main reason why people work. This includes all types of rewards, both
intrinsic and extrinsic, that are received as a result of employment by the organization.
V.S.P.Rao (2008) mentions in the strategic overview that the main objectives of compensation
administration are to design a cost-effective pay structure that will attract, motivate and retain
competent employees and that will also be viewed as fair by these employees. Apart from meeting
legal requirements, organizations have to take care of ever rising employee expectations and
competitive pressures while designing an effective compensation plan.

A sense of belonging in the work environment is considered to be more valued by the employees
(Miller, Erickson & Yust, 2001). By offering suitable level of privacy and sound control on work
place that improves the levels of motivation to be committed with the organization for long term, it is
easy for the organizations with magnificent personalization strategies to satisfy and retain employees
(Wells & Thelen, 2002 cited in Madiha et al., 2009).

Miller, Erickson & Yust (2001), stated workers think them to be valued in the work climate that
offers them a sense of belonging. Sometimes employee satisfaction and retention can be attained by
offering proper level of privacy and proper control on the workplace which improves the motivation
intensity to be loyal with organization, in organizations having munificent personalization procedures
and strategies (Wells & Thelen, 2002 cited in Madiha et al., 2009).

Automotive and Transportation Industry Services

From the Model T of the early 20th century to the upcoming Autonomous vehicles, the automotive
industry has seen a paradigm shift like no other. What was considered as a purely mechanical/electric
assembly of components has ceased to become automobile of the future – with software and electronics
setting the motion?

In most cities automobiles (specifically cars) are considered by people as their second home leading to a
fast convergence between consumer electronics and the possibilities in a car. The resultant effect is the
emergence of new facets of connected cars, self-driving cars, apps, the Internet of Things (IoT), the User
Experience (UX), Big Data, and from safety electronics to consumer electronics. It is estimated that there
are millions of lines of codes in a car at times even exceeding those in an aircraft. Analysts estimate that
more than 80% of all automotive innovation now stems from electronics.

Product Design and Development

New Product Development (NPD):

CEC‟s New Product Development is designed for organizations that want to:

Create a pipeline of new products.

Develop an existing product to target the demanding market.

 Re-engineer an existing product by introducing new exciting features with latest

technology.

Innovate completely new ideas for sustainable products.
28

When developing new products or services we consider the following:

New technologies which could have been developed internally or available externally.

Product competitors.

Need for the product in Customer‟s perspective, through market research, focus groups, and
direct feedback of customers.

CEC has a effective-strategy for NPD. We begin with an analysis of your existing product or
situation. Then, we jointly apply our thinking tools to create the virtual products i.e. 3D CAD
models. These virtual 3D products will have novel variations on the existing product or
completely new concepts. We test these ideas by passing them through various process such
as Brain storming a rigorous set of questions and analyses designed to separate the truly
viable ideas from the merely interesting. In the case of NPD, only ideas that the team
identifies as having high market potential and a very good chance of implementation pass to
the next stage.

What You Can Expect form us

We consider an NPD project successful when new products or services are actually launched
in the market. But even before this stage, you will be able to see results, including these three
deliverables that you can immediately assess when the project is completed.

 A list of ideas that have passed Brain storming.

 Selected concepts, which mutually agreed upon, and which will be turned into
proposals for development.

 A preliminary action plan for implementing the development of your New

Product/Service.
29

Reverse Engineering

“Reverse Engineering (RE) is today a consolidated methodology integrated in the design

process for reconstructing surfaces from physical prototypes.”

While doing Reverse Engineering, we analyze what makes a product works and the product
will be digitized which could be converted in to 3D CAD models. We create reports, and
those reports specify the exact answers to the questions posed. The data points could be
captured in 2D or 3D using contact or non-contact methods. The collected data points can be
supplied in convenient CAD formats as required by our customers. Engineering companies
requesting either data retrieval of part geometry or generating part prints can be reverse
engineered. The data is generated by scanning X Y Z points and supplying them in an ASCII,
DXF or IGES format.

Industrial Design

The skills that we encompass cover the aesthetics and usability of a product, which may be
improved for marketability and production. As such the industrial design looks at form and
function, and the connection between product and user.

Testing Services

Testing is perceived to take too long and cost too much. This is to some extent true.
However, this is likely due to the fact that companies do not focus on simple testing
processes until very late into the development life cycle.

Studies reveal that it is far more expensive to catch defects during testing – at least 60 times
as costly as finding the defect during design or prior to coding. (Watts S. Humphrey,
American Programmer, Dec 1994)

When they do get around to it, most organization‟s testing processes are not very disciplined
– they lack definition, measurement, and the ability to be repeated.
33

Typically, more than half of all software defects are found downstream in the development
process or during post-sale software use. This late discovery costs the economy billions of
dollars annually, since almost every business in the world relies on software to operate. And,
in today‟s highly regulated business environment, companies can no longer afford to
overlook software errors.

To be effective, software applications testing must start at the beginning of the development
process and play an integral role throughout the application lifecycle. uniq Technologies
works in partnership with the clients to test software across all phases of development.
Moreover uniq technologies as your QA partner brings skills, processes and tools to improve

CHAPTER 3

3.1. RESEARCH METHODOLOGY

Sampling is a procedure to draw conclusions about significant group of Respondents by

studying a small sample of the total population. A sample is a section of the population
selected to present the population as a whole. Ideally the sample should be representative
so that the researches can make accurate estimate of the thoughts and behaviors of the large
populations.

SOURCES OF DATA

Primary data collection is necessary when a researcher cannot find the data needed in
secondary sources. Three basic means of obtaining primary data are observation, surveys,
and experiments. The choice will be influenced by the nature of the problem and by the
availability of time. For this research study Questionnaire was the Primary Data source
which is applied to UNIQ TECHNOLOGIES

3.2. AREA OF STUDY:

The study was carried out among the employers of UNIQ Technologies to determine the
level of satisfaction.

TIME DURATION

The period of the study was carried out for duration of 3 months

3.3. LIMITATIONS OF THE PROJECT

 Only the domestic market is the focus of this study.

 Sample size is limited due to the limited period allocated for the survey
 The analysis is completely based on the information provided by the employees and hence
could be biased.
 Taking appointment of the respondents became a little difficult.
 Geographical area is restricted only to Chennai region
 Employees felt that the questionnaire was too big
39

3.4. METHODOLOGY USED

Primary data source was applied for the collection of the data from Uniq Technologies.
Data collected are edited and coded by using the tabular columns. This helps in converting
the gathered data into a tabulated grouped data.

 Percentage Analysis is applied to create a contingency table from the frequency

distribution and represent the collected data for better understanding.

 Chart Analysis is applied for better understanding of the percentage analysis and it
is done via pie, bar charts etc.

3.5. RESEARCH DESIGN:

Descriptive research, also known as statistical research, it is used to obtain information

concerning the current status of the phenomena to describe “what exists” with respect to
variables or conditions in a situation.

3.6. TOOLS FOR DATA COLLECTION

Survey method is employed to collect the data from the respondents and the data are
collected with the help of questionnaires. Questionnaire is administered for the
respondents. Questionnaire is a standardized form for collecting information to elicit data
from the respondents. A questionnaire consists of a set of questions presented to a
responded for his or her answers. The questionnaire prepared in this study was mainly
aimed at personal interview, multi-choice questions, and also checklists
40

QUESTIONNAIRE DESIGN

The questionnaire for the research study is to be structured in which different types of questions
like open ended and close ended are covered. The questions will be designed as an opinion,
multiple choices. A closed-ended question is one where the respondent is given a range of
answers and has to make a choice of one or more. The questions in the questionnaire were
arranged in a sequential manner grouped under the different factors of study.

The instruments used in the study are research instrument are the instruments which is used for
gathering or collecting information. The instruments used in the study are,

1. Direct questions
2. Close end questions
3. Dichotomous questions
4. Multiple choice questions

MULTIPLE CHOICE QUESTIONS

A multiple choice question refers to one which provides several set alternatives for its
answers. Thus, it is a middle ground between free answers and dichotomous question.

DICHOTOMOUS QUESTION

The dichotomous question is a question which can have two possible answers. Dichotomous
questions are usually used in a survey that asks for a Yes/No, True/False or Agree/Disagree
answers. They are used for clear distinction of qualities, experiences or respondent's opinions.

SAMPLE SIZE

It refers to the number of elements of the population to sample.

DATA PROCESSING

The study has been carried out with the help of the following data:
41

Primary data

The primary data was collected through the use of structured questionnaire from the
target respondents using survey method.

Secondary data

The secondary data was collected from journals and internet.

5.2. SUGGESTION AND RECOMMENDATION

From the overall analysis done can see that the employees in UNIQ are uite satisfied with
the current role however it still requires few changes that needs to be done as per the
response received. Though the salary package of UNIQ does not meet the the other
company standards however this could be balanced with the other non monetary benefits
that could be provided. Employees do have a neutralized response in most of the questions
and it looks like the employers do not find them as a burden or a positive for them but still
the workplace is maintained comfortable that makes them to be involved in the business for
a long run.

From my overall analysis can see that the the employees stands neutrailised leaving the
organization not in a complete negative side howevet the success of the company would be
maintained or grown when the positivity of the employees are reflected in the survey
conducted. I would suggest UNIQ Technologies to maintain the same level of space which
will not degrade the company and to work on the neutarlised part to be changed to a
positive one. Overall the satisfaction level looks satisfactory.

5.3. CONCLUSION

From the study done, I got an opportunity to know the working knowledge of an IT based
company and the varous factors that determines the job satisfaction of the employees when
it comes to an IT field. Also this has given me a wide scope to know the attitude of the
employees towards the organisation and the various factors that determines the level of
satisfaction on the same. Overall this study has given me a wide opportunity to understand
the factors determing the satisfaction level and the factors affecting the same. When
employers maintains or provides the balanced life of work life and personal life to all
employees this would definitely provide a long retain to hold the employees.
